CHAD THE CHOSEN’S Victory in Vermilion City Gym (by Michael Keens/ Exodus)

---

Since Pewter, I've offered my services to a young lady called Emily, and a
tag-along called Tetsubo, he's been on my case about the whole type difference
thing.
My newest Pokémon is a cool Farfetch’d called Dux who shows off just as much as
me.

We drew straws to battle against Surge and lucky Tetsubo got the first try, but
he wasn’t as lucky as we thought, he lost and I felt bad for the kid.
Still, I had to prove myself to him as up to Nugget Bridge, he doubted that I’d
ever pick up on type differences.
I was pretty much ready to use and exploit weaknesses now and I might finally
be a good trainer in Tetsubo’s eyes.

“Well, well, well, ana-der challenger to send home, cryin'.” said the big man.
He was much bigger than me, and that’s saying something.
“I’m Chad the Chosen...” I said surprisingly quieter than normal, probably
because I’d met someone taller than myself.
“... And I Will win the Gym Badge...”
“Forget it! No one beats me unless dey chicken out and use da type advan'age.”
“If you’ve got it, flaunt it. That’s what I always say.” I said confidently,
even though there was only one true phrase I used constantly.

We reached the arena and threw our Pokéballs.
“Make some noise, Voltorb.”
“Nothing’s stood up to your fangs yet, Chewtoy, let’s keep it that way.”
“The challenger, Chad the Chosen, is using a Raticate, the deadlier, Lieutenant Surge, is using a Voltorb, the trainers shall use two Pokémon with no time limit, let the battle begin!” said one of Surge’s lackeys through a megaphone.

“Go Voltorb! Use yer Dun-derbolt!”
“Voltorb!”
“QUICK ATTACK!”
Chewtoy easily got around the lightning blasts with his speed.
“HYPER FANG!”
“CATE!”
The fang hit home but slipped off.
“What the?!”
“Hah! Yuh can’t get a grip, not on my Voltorb anyway, his round shape helps him
slip out of dangerous attacks.”
“But with no limbs, I bet he can’t learn many attacks.” I said as if I knew
what I was talking about.
“Voltorb don’t need no taught attacks, not when his specialty move kicks in.”
“You won’t get the chance, CHEWTOY! FOCUS ENERGY!”
“Now’s our chance, Voltorb! Get in dere and Self Destruct!”
“Poor thing.” I commented, hoping for a desired result, “I bet he makes you
explode in every battle, what sort of life is that for a Pokémon?”
It looked back at him pleadingly, I couldn’t believe I had talked it into a few
more seconds.
“Don’t listen to dat punk, I always take you to the Pokémon Centre, I use Self
Destruct cos I have faith dat you’ll destroy your opponent wit’ it!”
It smiled and rolled forward, but Chewtoy was now ready.
“TACKLE ATTACK!”
The Focus Energy had him pumped up to maximum strength and the Voltorb was sent
bouncing around the arena ricocheting off the walls, floors and ceiling.
It fell down dazed but not defeated.
“Voltorb, use yer Sonic Boom!”
A gust of wind blasted across the floor and lifted Chewtoy up, he spun in the
mini-twister.
“Screech!”
A terrible high pitched hum filled up the arena and Chewtoy got the worst of it
and looked confused.
“We got it now Voltorb, Self Destruct!”
“CHEWTOY! TOXIC ATTACK!”
The purple gunk shot out of Chewtoy’s mouth and covered the little ball
Pokémon, it all slid off but did its job of poisoning it.
I had thought about this for quite some time since discovering how to teach
moves to Pokémon, and Chewtoy, being a rat, deserved some gross moves.
“Voltorb! Return!... Grrrrehhh... I can’t believe someone stopped my Voltorb
from explodin'.
Still, dis’ll be more dan a match for your little rat.”
“Mag-na-mite!”
“CHEWTOY, HYPER FANG!”
“CATE!”
He leaped up and brought his teeth down but couldn’t bite through.
“Hah, you’ll never win by usin’ dat attack over an' over, Magnemite’s metal
shell protects it from dose fangs. Magnemite! Dun-derbolt!”
Chewtoy was too close and fell to the floor positively frazzled.
“He’s an Electric Trainer...” I muttered, what was it they were weak against,
Tetsubo didn’t talk about them much.
What I had learned about types, I’d learned it from the kid, I had to think on
my own.
“Lightning destroys flying things because they’re in the air and easy pickings,
and water easily conducts it. Now what stops it exactly?” I pondered quietly.
“Hey, are yuh gonna battle or are yuh gonna talk ta yerself all day?”
His two lackeys laughed with him, he was trying to make me make a rash decision
but I knew how to block out bad comments, heck I’d done it most my life.
“If you ground yourself, lightning is less effective against you...
Ground!... BOULDER! GO!”
“Geodude!”
Surge smiled.
“So yuh really are a chicken, still, at least yuh know yuh can’t beat me
udderwise.”
“I’m not listening... BOULDER! ROCK THROW!”
The rocks hit the Magnemite and damaged its side mounted magnets.
“Magnemite! Sonic Boom!”
Boulder shielded its eyes and was thrown into the air and back down, but it
didn’t cause him any problems.
“BOULDER! EARTHQUAKE!”
He looked at me and smiled, this is what we had been training for, for some
time.
“GEO!”
He punched down and the ground exploded around Magnemite.
“Mag... Na... Mag...”
“FINISH IT, BOULDER, MEGA PUNCH!”
“GEO!”
The Magnemite flew back and shattered on the wall behind Surge, the pieces
landed nicely in his arms.
“Uh... Uh... Grrrr...”
Surge quickly shut up.

“I now present to yuh a Dun-der Badge, thanks for playin', don’t let the door
hit yer butt on the way out.” Surge said quickly and angrily.
I seized the red and yellow badge and just to rub it in:
“Yes! CHAD THE CHOSEN HAS WON A DUN-DER BADGE! I MEAN, A THUNDER BADGE!”
“Get outta here!” screamed Surge, I charged out with my Pokémon and his lackeys
slammed the door shut, he sure was a sore loser.

I looked for Tetsubo and Emily but couldn’t find them, why wasn’t there ever
anyone to congratulate me.
Em’ and Tet’ won a badge later on, 'cept they didn’t resort to weaknesses.
As for me, I didn’t care, I had just gotten the hang of type advantages, and
when you’ve got it, flaunt it!
