CHAD THE CHOSEN’S Victory in Celadon City Gym (by Michael Keens/ Exodus)

---

After beating those miserable Rockets on the S.S Anne, I did a lot of training
with my newest Pokémon, admittedly its a Psyduck with not much talent, but he’s
sure to change under my tutelage.
I had arrived in Celadon City, a large town with the best shops, for girls
mainly, with lots of dress and perfume stores.
It was so crowded and complex that I had to ask for directions.
One of the perfume stores opened up and there weren’t many customers there,
only staff members, all of which were young women.
“Um, hiya... Would any of you lovely ladies like to help the world renowned
Chad the Chosen?” I asked politely, finishing up with a soft tone, much to my
disbelief.
A couple of them blushed and I could have sworn the other two were giggling at
me.
I ignored them and went to the counter.
A woman in dark robes with blue hair tied around curlers was located there.
“Can I help you- Oh, you’re a guy, are you looking for a present for your
girlfriend?”
“Of course not, although I’m surrounded by ladies, none have proven to be
perfect for Chad the Chosen.” I mused.
The other girls started laughing, there was no mistaking that.
“Then why are you here?”
“Oh, I’m looking for the Gym, I’m a Pokémon Champion and I’ve got four
badges.”
“The Gym is located three blocks away on the right when you leave the store.
I can have someone escort you there if you like.”
“No thanks, I’m quite independent. Tell me, what’s the Gym Leader like?”
I picked up on more giggling, did I really say something embarrassing three
times in a row?
“She’s a very gentle and sweet young lady.”
“That’s good then, she’ll be easy pickings.”
“Excuse me?”
“You don’t become a good trainer by being kind, you have to be strong, tough
and courageous, that’s the only way, and if this girl can’t toughen up then I’m
afraid I’ll be walking away with that badge.”
“Really?”
“Uh huh.”
“You think so?”
“Uh huh.”
“Positive?”
“Uh huh.”
“I’m the Gym Leader.”
“Uh huh- What?!”
“Mr Chad the Chosen, I accept your challenge and I will show you how empathy
with your Pokémon can make all the difference...”

We were later standing in Erika’s Gym, I thought she was a Grass Trainer but I
didn’t have a great deal of Pokémon to exploit that type.

“I choose Victreebel!”
“Go on Headache, show her who’s boss!”
“Viiii!!!”
“Psy?...”
“I know you’re weak against Grass attacks but if you use your Psychic attacks,
you’ll exploit their Poison side.”
“Psyduck!”
“NOW USE YOUR CONFUSION ATTACK!”
“Psy?”
“Darn, its happening again...”
I had tried hard to train Headache but he only seemed to use Psychic attacks
when the circumstances were dire.
“Victreebel, Vine Whip.”
“Viiii!!!”
“HEADACHE! SCRATCH ATTACK!”
“Psy...”
It ran forward slowly and pathetically and was hit by the vines.
“Now Slam.”
“Psy!... Duck!...” yelled Headache as he was thrown to the floor several times,
its pupils disappeared as its eyes glowed blue.
Time for some Psychic-style wooping!
“Oh yeah, its happening. HEADACHE, DISABLE ATTACK!”
“Psy-”
A thundering sound occurred and the Victreebel froze.
“CONFUSION ATTACK!”
The Victreebel fell back and the vines loosened.
“Nice one Headache!”
“Psy?” it said turning back and giving me the usual odd look.
“Don’t look back at me!” I groaned and Headache turned around too late and was
slammed on by Victreebel.
“Finish it with Sleep Powder.”
“Psy...”
It collapsed to the floor and slept happily.
“Psy... Duck... Psy...”
“Headache...” I groaned recalling it and throwing another Pokéball.
“Farfetch’d!!!”
“Flying beats Grass. I learned that on several occasions.”
“Yes, but will it always do what you ask of it? Victreebel, Razor Leaf.”
“USE YOUR CUT ATTACK!”
“Far har har!!!” it screamed throwing its leak with total precision to tear
apart the leaves.
“PECK ATTACK!”
With a crashing sound, the Victreebel fell away from Dux and collapsed on the
floor.
“Return Victreebel, I choose Vileplume.”
“Vile!”
“Vileplume, Acid.”
“FURY ATTACK!”
“Far har har!”
He ran forward while twirling his leak to reflect the acid rounds.
“CUT ATTACK!”
“Far!!!”
He scraped his leak across the Vileplume.
“Vile!” it shouted.
“Stun Spore!”
The dust hit home and Dux looked a little drowsy and dizzy.
“Petal Dance!”
The Vileplume spun itself into a twister and gathered leaves from the plants
located near the glass that covered the majority of the dome, and dashed
forward, Dux went flying.
“Solar Beam!”
“SLASH ATTACK!”
Dux threw the razor-like leak down which spiralled around the Solar Beam and
tore down the Vileplume’s head, but the beam also collided and Dux spiralled
to the floor.
“Double K.O...” I muttered somewhat worried.
“Last Pokémon, I hope its up to the task.” smiled Erika and we both threw our
Pokéballs.
“Gela!”
“Gela!”
My eyes widened, Tangela Vs Tangela?...
“Two Tangelas...” I said out loud.
“Poison Powder!” said Erika unexpectedly.
“VINE WHIP!”
Though it cleared the air, the vines were covered in poison and Entwine looked
a little poorly.
“VINE WHIP QUICKLY!”
It flung the poisonous vines forward and left a little on the Erika’s Tangela.
“You’re a worthy trainer but why must you shout to your Pokémon?”
“CONSTRICT!!!... Oh you mean this? I do this all the time, I mean-”
“Tangela, use your Slam attack.”
“VINE WHIP!”
Entwine caught the Tangela off guard being the long range attacker.
“Vine Whip too!”
The vines immediately caught Entwine and he fell to the floor, tried to get up
and fell due to poison, then got up and repeated his fall once more.
“Entwine! Get up! Fight the poison and fight!” I shouted.
Erika’s Tangela was also stumbling.
“Just hang in there and I’ll give you some antidote after the battle, you too
Entwine.” she said gently.
“Gela...”
“Gela?...” questioned Entwine.
“Why are you staring at me like that? GO SLAM THAT TANGELA.”
He stepped forward and tripped again, then stumbled around, it fell once more
and looked pleadingly at me.
“You can do it, buddy.”
“Gela...” he said somewhat nervous.
“Entwine, we’ve been through a lot together, I have faith in your abilities,
plus we’ve gotta show sis how well we’ve been training, right?”
He still looked at me and signalled at Erika’s Tangela.
“You’re jealous?!... You know we’ll go to the Pokémon Centre straight after
the battle!”
He nodded happily.
Erika sighed, “So that shouting in battle is more or less an act, you’re a
slightly tougher trainer but deep down you do have empathy for your Pokémon.”
“Guilty as charged, miss. ENTWINE! USE CONSTRICT!”
“Bind attack!”
Whipping sounds occurred with the flurry of vines and Erika’s came out on top
and held it above and prepared to squeeze the life out of Entwine.
I was out of ideas, but I had to win in order to show sis that- Of course!
“ENTWINE! HYPER BEAM!”
“Gellll... LAAAA!!!” he squealed and the other Tangela was shot down and
pushed backwards but also forcing it on the floor.
The dust cleared and Erika’s Tangela was out of it.
“ALRIGHT!!!”
“Gela...” panted Entwine.

“And here is your Rainbow Badge, Mr Chad, I admit I judged you but you showed
me how big your heart is. Good luck in your journey.”
“You too miss, sorry about insulting your training skills, your love has made
your Pokémon super-strong and super-confident.”
We shook hands and she gave me my badge, a pretty flower with different
coloured petals.
My Pokémon were very able but this little encounter helped me realise that I
had been a little tough on them and perhaps it was time to loosen up a little.
