Emily's Second Gym Battle: Vermilion City (by Michael Keens/ Exodus)

---

I had just traded that baby Clefairy for a more useful Mr Mime, who had the
name Miles, he had already helped us move some rocks so that Tetsubo could
retrieve his Diglett.
He seemed a little upset after the Gym Leader beat his Pokémon, he said he used
the wrong ones, but Chad had no trouble getting his badge, we’d have to see how
I did.

The doors automatically shut themselves behind me through some switch device.
There stood three mean looking people, a woman, a young man, and in the centre,
a huge man in army clothes.
“I’m... Emily Whyte... and I’m here... for a Gym Battle...” I said nervously.
“Whoa, my next challenger is a cutie, but I don’t go easy on nobody.”
“Uh, yes, sir...”
“Don’t be afraid Gurly, at least, not yet anyway...”

We soon made our way to the arena.
“I really wish I could give badges to ya, pretty gurl, but yer gonna have to
beat me like everyone else.”
“Of course, sir.”
“Go Pokéball!”
“Go!” I shouted throwing mine so that it’d land at the same time.
“Pika!”
“Mr Mime!”
“An Electric Trainer...” I said to myself, “At least its even on the types.”
Tetsubo said he was going to use his Staryu, and he probably did, I felt sorry
for him and Twinkill.
“The challenger, Emily, is using a Mr Mime, the deadlier Lieutenant Surge, is
using a Pikachu, the trainers shall use two Pokémon with no time limit, let the
battle begin!” said the male through a megaphone.
“Pikachu! Use yer Dun-derbolt!”
“Pika!”
“Miles, use your Confusion.”
It wasn’t even paying attention, just practising its miming.
“Hah, its not even interested in battlin’!” laughed Surge, “Pikachu! Show it
what its here fer!”
“Pika-CHU!!!”
“Miiiime!!!” screamed Miles, the Pikachu stood proud, until it was punched hard
by Miles, sending it into a wall.
“Mega Punch... Cool... Miles, I need you to use your Psychic attacks, then
you can perform for me later.”
“Mr Mime!”
“Pikachu...”
“Pika...” it groaned with an angry look in its eyes.
“Return, you’ll get yer chance later, this calls for Voltorb, Go!”
“Vol-torb!”
“That’s the Pokémon that...”
“MIME!”
It had interrupted him again, Miles ran forward in rage.
“Miles! Step back!”
“MIME!”
It wouldn’t stop, the Voltorb was glowing.
“Voltorb! Use yer Self Destruct!”
“Voltorb...”
The huge explosion blew me back a little.
When the dust cleared, both Pokémon were down.
“Miles... If only you’d listen to me, Self Destruct is one of the most
powerful attacks, so powerful, it knocks out the user...”
I recalled him, at least the Voltorb had blown up on my first Pokémon and not
my last.
“Solar! Go!”
“Go Pikachu!”
“Pika!”
It was psyched up for another go.
“Pikachu! Use yer Dun-derbolt!”
“Solar, Razor Leaf!”
The leaves fired and cancelled the first blast.
“Vine Whip!”
“Now Pikachu! Use Dun-der Wave!”
“Oh no!”
The electricity flew onto the ends of and travelled up Solar’s vines.
“Bulbasa-ar!!!”
A mild explosion cancelled the attack and sent shocks through Solar.
“Solar, can you stand?”
“Bulba!” he shouted, he wasn’t going to give up.
“Pikachu! Ana-der Dun-derbolt!”
“Try your Growth!” I shouted, an aura of green surrounded Solar.
He used his vines to block the electricity, the Growth empowering his special
abilities and weakening the blow.
“Yuh’ve got it on the ropes! Use yer Quick Attack!”
“Solar! Razor Leaf!”
Vine Whip would just have been jumped over, Razor Leaf was a harder one to
dodge.
The Pikachu was caught in the hurricane and blasted back.
“Grrrr! Finish it quickly Pikachu! Dun-der...”
“’Dun-der?’...” I asked, then gasped, “Thunder! Solar! Razor Leaf above you!!!”
I screamed.
It was all I could think of.
“Bulba...”
Electricity ran through it stopping the attack.
“CHHUUUUU!!!”
Electricity flew into the air and made a spinning energy sphere, lightning was
building up.
“Solar!!!...” I shouted.
He pulled himself up and nearly slipped, he was fighting the paralysis with all
he had.
“Bulba... BULBASAUR!!!”
The leaves shot up at the last moment, the lightning rained down and clashed
with the leaves, deflecting the lightning everywhere.
“Pikkkaaa!” screamed the Pikachu getting hit by his energy.
“Yerrrggghhh!!!” Surge screamed ducking down, his lackeys did the same.
“Aaaeeeggghhh!” I shouted as one of the bolts came down at me.
“Bulba!”
A huge flash of light exploded it front of me shooting me back.

When I came to, Solar was on top of me looking very anxious.
Looking up, Surge was offering his hand.
“Ugghhh... Did I win?...”
I scanned the room and saw the Pikachu in the arms of the woman.
It was pretty bruised.
“Yup gurly, I’m very proud, of yuh and yer Bulbasaur.”
“Solar?... What happened?”
“Dat courageous Pokémon used its body ta block the lightnin’, it got pretty
damaged though, but it shows how much it cares about ya.”
“Oh Solar... I care for you too.” I said happily hugging it, before letting go
as electricity ran through it again.
“I give you, a Dun-der Badge.” said Surge handing it over.
“Alright!” I yelled holding up the red and yellow badge.
“Bulba...” smiled Solar.

And that was how I got my second badge, Tetsubo managed to beat Surge soon
after, I think I inspired him a little, which was nice.
Chad and I waited in the Pokémon Centre until he returned and we talked.
After all, he was leaving for the S.S Anne boat cruise tonight and who knew
when we’d meet each other again.
