Episode Guide #209 - #216 Around The Whirlpool Fly Me To The Moon Takin’ It On the Chinchou! A Corsola Caper! Mantine Overboard! Octillery The Outcast Dueling Heroes The Perfect Match! Around The Whirlpool Pokémon seen: Togepi, Pikachu, Meowth, Wobbuffet, Arbok, Weezing, Poliwhirl, Goldeen, Totodile, Lugia, Corsola, Tentacruel, Chansey, Starmie, Magikarp, Dewgong, Seel, Staryu, Golduck, Marill, Skarmory, Scizor, Psyduck Story: After winning the Storm Badge the group are well on their way to the Whirl Islands, their boat reaches a group of whirlpools, Team Rocket dress up as attendants and stand ready to net Pikachu but the boat jolts slightly and they net Ash’s head and reveal themselves. They end up discussing how they stowed on board so the group walks away but this angers Team Rocket and their Pokémon attack, Wobbuffet sends Pikachu’s electricity backwards and the explosion blasts Team Rocket off but also sends the group into the water towards one of the whirlpools. They attempt to swim away with Water Pokémon but the strong current continues to pull them in, luckily for them a mysterious underwater Pokémon (Lugia) stops the whirlpool and a Corsola and Tentacruel help bring the group back to a boat Professor Elm is on. The Corsola belongs to Elm and Misty is infatuated by this Pokémon, Elm introduces Captain Marius whom the Tentacruel belongs to and who has the most knowledge of these waters. The boat nears Blue Rock Isle, named because of the large coloured rock which guides boats to the port, the group soon hear of the Whirl Cup, a tournament exclusively for Water Pokémon which Misty is dead set on entering. They learn of the rules and regulations of the cup, and while Ash and Misty enter, Brock instead gains some insight and data on Water Pokémon care from local trainers for his studies in Pokémon Breeding. Team Rocket overhear a great deal and decide to steal several of the trained Water Pokémon. The group inquire as to what the mysterious Pokémon was that swam beneath them earlier; they don’t get the answer but are given advice and insight on their dreams and mysterious Pokémon of the world. Team Rocket’s balloon approaches and the Water Pokémon are netted and carried away, Arbok attacks when the group gets close and Misty’s Staryu loses to it, Psyduck tries to help but still can’t swim. Pikachu attacks but is caught in a net, Corsola charges forward, dodges around Weezing, overpowers Arbok and finishes with Spike Cannon to tear apart the net and then the balloon, resulting in the usual outcome. Ash reports his progress to Oak and Elm gets down to yet another long talk about his theory on the mysterious Pokémon, and later the group say goodbye to him and Marius before making their move across Blue Rock Isle. My favourite Quote: Meowth: “Do my feline eyes deceive me, or are those?...” James: “The twerps?... You’re right Meowth, let’s go show them who we are!” Jessie: “Yes! We’re waterlogged and malnourished, but that has never stopped Team Rocket!” Things I’d like to point out: With the debut of the fifth opening credits there’s a reason why Kingler, Snorlax, Charizard, Heracross and Bulbasaur are in a group shot; they’re all Pokémon Ash leaves behind at one point or another but do make an appearance or two after their initial leavings, only Muk and Tauros are nowhere to be seen. And yes, since Squirtle and Charizard left, Bulbasaur is due to leave the group and make way for new Pokémon; I always thought it was pointless to have Bulbasaur tagging along all this time when Ash has Bayleef, even if she has yet to learn Solarbeam. Delibird despite earlier thoughts doesn’t join Team Rocket, but it appears from time to time to bug them. There’s a nice shot where Ash stares to one side and his rivals/friends that are regular characters of the series float across in the background; Gary, Ritchie and Casey. Larvitar and Politoed are relevant and soon to be regulars of the series, the shot of Ash’s five badges becomes old and dated from the Olivine Gym win onwards, and Misty’s Lure Ball becomes relevant in three episodes time. Finally, throughout the opening many Legendary Pokémon are seen; Ho-oh, Entei, Raikou, Suicune, Zapdos, Articuno, Moltres, Lugia, Celebi, and joining them in the final shot Mewtwo and Mew, so All of the current legendary Pokémon are seen. Ash and the group appear embarrassed to be seen with Team Rocket who are stowaways, but didn’t Chuck pay for their (or at least Ash’s) ticket? It doesn’t say much for the group who should know better to think they could just walk away from Team Rocket. Another theory that the movie’s storylines don’t affect the series at all; currently they’ve only the sound of Lugia and barely caught its silhouette to link it to the events in the second movie but to me it’s a pretty distinctive wail. Misty claims not to have seen so many Water Pokémon when there’s only 10 in the pool, I’m sure that’s a massive exaggeration since she comes from a Water Pokémon Gym and has travelled to many places including Oak’s research lab where there were at least 10 different kinds of Pokémon if not more and over 30 Water Pokémon in total. Ash really does have a bad memory, he battled both Skarmory and Scizor during the last couple of seasons, plus in the one with Skarmory he received a brief statement about Steel-types and their well known weakness; Fire Pokémon. But why does Elm only mention Steel-types, and not the also recently discovered Dark-types? The sound effects for Staryu’s Swift attack in the second half during the battle is off a little, about a second earlier than the event happens, the same goes for Staryu’s Water Gun attack splash, Arbok’s Poison Sting, James’s net gun, Corsola colliding with Arbok, Arbok flying into Weezing, when they both crash into the balloon, when the ropes break and finally when the balloon explodes. In fact the entire scene’s sound effects are off, and I doubt it had anything to do with the broadcast since the voice sync appears to match up. Whoever’s on the editing sound staff should get their act together and put a little more time into syncing up actions with sounds, having worked a little on the subject I should know. Who’s That Pokémon?: (This Pokémon’s howl will cause you to get the shivers!) Houndoom Cameos in Pokémon Journey: None. Fly Me To The Moon Pokémon seen: Pikachu, Togepi, Corsola, Pidgey, Meowth, Spearow, Fearow, Wobbuffet Story: On the route through Blue Rock Isle, Misty spots some Corsola who are headed to Pudgey Pidgey Isle, the group are notified by a Pokémon Caretaker that they can’t go there by boat because it’s whirlpool season and only Pokémon can swim through them. They cross a bridge despite the winds and find that the native Pokémon here are huge fat Pidgey, because they are protected here they have no need to fly and they don’t diet either, except for the caretaker’s Pidgey Orville who likes to fly really high. Team Rocket float overhead and Meowth explains this isle and its inhabitants to his team-mates. The caretaker explains how in the past Pidgey were used to deliver letters but the world has changed and the Pidgey were used less and less. The group contact Oak and let him know of the Pokémon here, when Orville returns it stares at the caretaker’s grandfather’s painting depicting a story of a Pidgey who flew to the sun, the stars and the moon, for many years Orville has dreamt of flying higher than any other Pidgey has gone before. Team Rocket enter disguised as meteorologists with a specialised balloon to measure how high Orville can go, they plan on swiping Pidgey and Pikachu as soon as the opportunity arrives, Meowth has noble motives though. That night he gives Orville a small communication device, he can relate to the Pidgey since he too strived to do something other Meowth couldn’t do, but he had to do it alone and without help so he doesn’t want Orville to have to go through this experience alone. The next day and the balloon takes off to follow Orville as it begins its attempt to fly as high as it can go, the fat Pidgey stay behind but seem to support Orville. Meowth remains in contact with Orville while it outflies a group a nasty Spearow, the group put on air masks since they’re at a dangerous height. A Fearow attacks and Pikachu deals with it, but as it falls it tears off the disguise around Team Rocket’s balloon to reveal the usual Meowth one, the group are too high up now with little oxygen in the tank and it’s dangerous to go any higher, the rockets burn out so they have no choice but to stop. Despite all this, Orville keeps on going until its body grows numb but it communicates with Meowth, since he never gave up his struggle it won’t either and it’s happy to push itself so hard. Orville gets so high to the point it can see the planet below and the moon ahead of it before it dives back down at an alarming rate, Meowth orders it to open its wings and head towards the balloon, but it shoots down through it and doesn’t appear to be breathing so Pikachu shocks it back to consciousness. The balloon’s damage has it take a fall but the pudgey Pidgey suddenly start flying and cushion its landing. Team Rocket land on one of the rockets which suddenly shoots into the distance, back on the island the fat Pidgey want to fly now as Orville has shown them that they are Pokémon that are meant to do so. The group say their goodbyes and move on with their journey, while Team Rocket has crashed into a tree and Meowth sits with Orville and discusses what it saw on its adventure... My favourite Quote: Meowth (to Orville the Pidgey): “Pokémon need ta hear this, you will be a hero; when they see what we’re capable of, All Pokémon big an’ small will make their Own dreams come true.” Things I’d like to point out: The title isn’t a pun but the title of a song by Frank Sinatra. Once again Ash and the group meet someone, visit his house, use his phone and go on an adventure together without once asking for his name, they don’t introduce themselves or tell him their names either. The caretaker replies to Brock’s concerns of the bridge being dangerous to cross by asking if he’d rather take their chances with the whirlpools. What with the stupidly strong winds operating and the whirlpools directly under them the group are effectively taking a chance on the whirlpools anyway. The fat Pidgey resemble Kiwis in that they are flightless birds. Orville the Pidgey is probably a reference to Orville Wright, one of the Wright Brothers who invented the airplane. The caretaker only seems to realise today that Orville wants to fly high like the Pidgey in the painting, but after telling the group about the past when Orville simply learned how to fly, suddenly he now speaks about Orville as if he has known that flying higher than any Pidgey has been Orville’s dream, simply dubbing out the caretaker’s surprise that this was Orville’s goal with something else would have fixed this problem. Pokémon may seemingly be immune to the extreme height and the thin air so why does Ash take off the oxygen mask to give an order to Pikachu? It could easily be a reused clip from a past episode, but we clearly see Ash has the mask off even after this when Pikachu returns. He could have easily talked and commanded with the mask on, it just wouldn’t look cool or dramatic I guess. I’m no science expert, but surely there was more danger than explained of flying so high so as to get above the earth, how high do you have to be before there’s no oxygen or gravity or set off the process where your body explodes, and let’s not forget the reckless dive of Orville’s, wasn’t there a chance of it burning up in the earth’s orbit? Who’s That Pokémon?: (This Pokémon’s body has a bright orange glow!) Magmar Cameos in Pokémon Journey: None. Takin’ It On the Chinchou! Pokémon seen: Togepi, Pikachu, Chinchou, Meowth, Wobbuffet, Totodile, Weezing, Bayleef, Corsola Story: The group ride a cable car to a place called Blue Lagoon, which isn’t the place they were meant to go. Now they need to get from the high mountain region to their destination to reach the boat in time or else they’ll have to wait three days for the next one. A Chinchou appears and Misty attempts to catch it but it already has a trainer Dayton and a nickname Bright, it shocks Ash when he attempts to help stop it from running away. Dayton invites them all to the parade of the Chinchou while Team Rocket see and want the Chinchou for themselves. In town the group contact Oak again who explains that the Whirl Islands used to be at the bottom of the ocean before seismic activity raised them above the surface, since Chinchou used the area as a nesting ground to leave their eggs they have continued to do so regardless of the fact that they must climb the mountain to reach the lagoon. When the Chinchou are born, they simply leave the island to reach the ocean, the parade of the Chinchou involves people escorting baby Chinchou to the ocean and Dayton and his father are in charge this year, the group are given permission to join them. The residents give the Chinchou a send off while throwing water at them to keep their moisture levels high and the rest of the journey is taken care of by Dayton and his dad. Bright stops momentarily at a bridge but eventually leads the Chinchou across, on the other side of the bridge Team Rocket are waiting, their device has a jammed button so most of the Chinchou are instructed to run back, Team Rocket’s capture missile nets the bridge and pulls it apart before dropping into the river. Ash and Dayton are stuck alone with a handful of Chinchou and after Bright and Pikachu shock Team Rocket and send them away they must find their way to the ocean by themselves and meet up with the others later. Nightfall comes and the Chinchou are tired because Dayton forgot to pour water on them, Ash helps by having Totodile do it. While crossing a narrow path, Dayton explains how Chinchou use their lights to see and find their friends, right before Dayton takes a fall and disappears down the steep slope into darkness, he wakes up alone with a hurt leg while Ash searches for him in the dark, Bright manages to locate him and so he is found. Fog comes in the morning but the group find their way to the ocean where the others have arrived, but the Chinchou gather and fall into a trap and their cage is lifted up while Weezing clouds the area. Pikachu keeps on missing Team Rocket since it can’t see the balloon so Dayton has Bright and the others shine their lights to reveal where they are, Totodile clears a path but Bayleef’s Razor Leaves are ineffective against the cage. Dayton’s father tells him the Chinchou should use Thunder Wave, and the combined force blows up the cage so the Chinchou fall safely into the ocean, Pikachu shocks the Rockets, followed by all of the Chinchou and they go flying. Dayton is saddened that his Chinchou Bright will be leaving with the other Chinchou, it’s reluctant to leave but Dayton assures it they’ll be friends no matter how far apart they are. Ash suspects Bright will come back to Dayton soon, while Team Rocket drift in the ocean and get shocked by the Chinchou again. The group leaves on a boat and Misty spots a Corsola on the pier but fails to catch it this time. My favourite Quote: (The two groups call over a chasm) Ash: “I’ll be right here too guys so you don’t have to worry about anything!...” Misty: “If you wanna get lost Dayton you can have Ash lead the way!...” Brock: “Good point.” Ash: “What?!” Things I’d like to point out: If Misty did catch Chinchou, she’d have six Pokémon on her team, so unless she hasn’t issued Togepi a Pokéball and is therefore breaking the Pokémon six limit rule, then she wouldn’t be able to catch a Corsola unless she’s got someone to send Pokémon to that we’ve never seen before. For apparently no reason, Team Rocket are wearing their Black Arachnid costumes from “Spinarak Attack” early on, yet when they confront the group they simply wear green coats and then return to their usual uniforms. After Meowth breaks the remote control and the rocket malfunctions and destroys the bridge, Meowth is holding the remote control, but it’s completely intact! Ash was lucky he warned Totodile in time not to hurt the Chinchou, attacking with water is all Totodile seems to do so it’s the default setting if you even mention Water Gun and a target. Why is Dayton upset? How long will it take for his Chinchou to lead the baby Chinchou into the ocean? Unless it plans on raising them all and never actually returning to its trainer which must hold its Pokéball (considering it’s immune to Pokéball capture). Who’s That Pokémon?: (This Pokémon uses its lips to examine things!) Smoochum Cameos in Pokémon Journey: Just a Chinchou, although I trained one for my team, main character Tetsubo already has a Water-type, so ownership of a Chinchou in the series falls to his rival in the second series. A Corsola Caper! Pokémon seen: Pikachu, Togepi, Psyduck, Corsola, Bulbasaur, Bayleef, Meowth, Victreebel, Staryu, Totodile, Arbok, Noctowl, Weezing, Wobbuffet, Poliwhirl Story: The group’s journey has gotten them to the second island in their quest; Yellow Rock Isle, where the rocks and the streets are a yellow colour. There they find shops selling models made of shed Corsola horns, the beauty of them spurs Misty on to catch a Corsola. The shopkeeper takes an interest in Pikachu because of its colour so Misty shows him her Psyduck which runs off, it leads the group to where a house is literally being swept out to sea. The group drives a boat out towards a whirlpool dragging the house in and use Bulbasaur and Bayleef to reel the house back to shore. The girl Mika, her sister Andrea and their father thank the group for saving her, it’s explained that the family live on top of a Corsola nest, the sisters’ father is an artist who uses Corsola horns so living above a nest makes it easy to collect them. The Corsola with Mika apparently appeared on their doorstep one day, but it’s way too energetic and sometimes hurt the other Corsola without realising it, so one day they disappeared and this caused the foundation of the nest to break and their house to be swept out to sea. Psyduck is knocked aside by the energetic Corsola and it’s revealed to be a wild one, Misty wants to catch it now but Brock prevents her from doing so. The family need to get the Corsola back, meanwhile Team Rocket engage in what they’ve counted as their five hundredth heist, breaking into a shop with Corsola horn products. They are caught but escape with all the items, this alerts the group who block off their escape, Corsola knocks Jessie to the ground, and a battle follows between several Pokémon. Team Rocket are defeated again and Water Gun attacks send the team flying while all the items are returned safely. The group starts finding some of the family’s Corsola (while Brock keeps holding Misty back from catching the wild Corsola); the wild one finds most of its ‘friends’ but they are still scared of it even when returning to the family. Meowth and Team Rocket plan to capture all the Corsola for the Boss while all the Corsola are found, Misty is about to hunt down Corsola but prevents it from being captured when all the others are. The Corsola are dragged up to the balloon by cords, Noctowl flies up but is stopped by Weezing’s gases, it eventually recovers and brings the balloon back down to earth. Misty has Staryu cut the cables and free the Corsola and fights Arbok and Victreebel along with some of the Corsola. Victreebel attacks the wild Corsola, but it recovers its health and fights back, it rallies the other Corsola and they all use Spike Cannon, Team Rocket try to hide behind the balloon basket but part of the burner is hit and explodes, sending them on their way. With them gone Misty is able to challenge the wild Corsola, despite how strong it looks Misty is focussed, she uses Poliwhirl to battle it who uses Bubble but is hit back by Tackle, it slaps the Corsola but it uses Recover to get its health back, Misty uses Water Gun but Corsola has the ability Mirror Coat to send it back with double special attack power. Poliwhirl attacks with Bubble again, gets hit and then Doubleslaps Corsola again, finally it uses Tackle and Misty uses her Lure Ball before it recovers; the catch is successful and Misty finally gets her Corsola. The group says their goodbye to the family and leaves with a new member to their own little ‘family’. My favourite Quote: (After Jessie’s queen related daydream) Jessie: “Say hello to your new queen!” Meowth: “Is her crown too tight or what?!” James: “Talk about being a legend... in her own mind.” Meowth: “I’m beginning to mind!” Things I’d like to point out: Getting onto the flooring of a floating house and pulling on a banister seems the most useless way to push a house back to shore, surely the Corsola would have done nothing more than break the banister, and it’s a tad unrealistic for Bulbasaur and Bayleef to pull even a floating house with their vines with nothing holding them down to the boat but themselves. There’s an error when the ‘crowned’ Jessie is tackled by Corsola, the still of the impact shows the crown falling off her head, but when Jessie lands she’s still wearing it and her particular hairstyle doesn’t look like it could balance a crown anyway, unless she uses so much hair gel that it’s become glued down to her head. “I don’t know what those troublemakers thought they were doing...” the shopkeeper says, unless it was a figure of speech it’s a pretty stupid thing to say. Team Rocket were obviously taking all the Corsola horn products to either keep for themselves or sell. Brock gets to take a little revenge on Misty since her wanting to catch Corsola borders on obsession, twice he gets to pull her away by the ear. Meowth’s Dream Moments continue as he imagines the Boss walking out onto his estate in the morning and seeing the many Corsola horns glow in the sunlight, and that this will earn them a reward. When Jessie is tackled a second time by Corsola, the impact moment is exactly the same as the first, except without the Corsola jewellery flying everywhere, but Jessie’s face after falling on the ground and speaking is slightly different to the first time, which may be all that’s different except for the background and the characters present. Victreebel’s Razor Leaves aren’t just dangerously sharp to the Corsola, Grass attacks do double damage because they’re effective against both Rock and Water- types, the types that Corsola has both of. It’s hard to tell, but it didn’t seem like the wild Corsola played any part in the battle until Victreebel attacked it, maybe it was leading the other Corsola but since they’re scared of it and it played no part in their escape I think that’s doubtful. I would have thought only it should have been battling while the others stay put or simply run away. Why is Corsola’s ability to recover health so appealing to Misty, her Staryu can do it too, or at least it should be able to, I wouldn’t be surprised if it didn’t though since Misty’s Staryu isn’t particularly versatile or has acquired many attacks. It’s no big secret that Staryu/Starmie are one of my favourite Pokémon, and as such Misty disappoints me with how little a range of attacks and a lack of stamina her one has and is therefore giving Staryu a bad name. I’m not going to bother counting exactly how often Team Rocket have blasted off but it’s unlikely all 500 times were all seen in the series since they’d have to have blasted off at least two or three times an episode and include all the times they were washed away, ran away or fell down somewhere. It’s too coincidental that 500 of Team Rocket’s heists could have all ended with exactly 500 blast offs so I hope it was just an estimate from James rather than a definite figure. Wobbuffet only appears at the end of the episode, briefly appearing just before and during Team Rocket blasting off, and yet it doesn’t utter a sound (apart from muffled screams with the others while running to the balloon). A little strange Misty mentions Poliwhirl will get a new friend when it’s about to fight the Corsola, but in order to capture it and make it its friend it’s got to beat it silly, I’m sure there’s a bad moral in there somewhere. Misty’s plan is flawed if she was referring to the Mirror Coat technique, if she wanted to outdo Recover then hitting it a lot is the way, however, she should have switched to physical attacks since Mirror Coat is ineffective against them, she should be looking out for her own Pokémon’s health and not just the new one she’s trying to catch. I hope Misty doesn’t use Mirror Coat too often as I’ll have to check whether or not the series have used it correctly (to counter special attacks) since I’ve just about lost hope that Wobbuffet ever will. Now that Misty has used her own Lure Ball I’m now questioning why the writers forgot to have Brock use his Heavy Ball (and why the other two never used their Fast Balls). I hoped he might catch a Steelix since he was unlikely to evolve his Onix but having watched the series through, it’s not happened, and it’s not like any of the unaired episodes could have had him use the Heavy Ball since the Pokémon caught would be proof of that. Who’s That Pokémon?: (This Pokémon is usually found near power plants!) Electabuzz Cameos in Pokémon Journey: An energetic Corsola will, but that’s it. Mantine Overboard! Pokémon seen: Togepi, Pikachu, Meowth, Wobbuffet, Magikarp, Shellder, Tentacool, Horsea, Mantine, Chinchou, Remoraid, Totodile, Staryu, Corsola, Psyduck Story: The group misses their boat to Red Rock Isle, and must wait a day for the next one. They befriend a young lady called Luca, who agrees to help the guys out by giving them a lift. Luca’s on a mission to find the Silver Wing, each generation of her family has explored these seas researching its Water Pokémon and started with Luca’s great grandfather. Luca recently found his journal which spoke of him finding the Silver Wing, a link to a mysterious Pokémon (possibly the one Ash and the others saw in the water), but his ship was caught in a whirlpool shortly after the diving expedition and sank to the bottom of the ocean, along with the Silver Wing. Everyone survived but sadly no one believed him about the Silver Wing so he desperately tried to locate the sunken ship and retrieve it. All these missions ended in failure but Luca is sure she’s calculated where the sunken ship lies and wants to find the Silver Wing in order to clear her great grandfather’s name. Ash tags along with Luca and the two dive down to the sunken ship with help from Luca’s Magikarp; they are stopped by a Mantine protecting it so after returning to the surface Luca plans a distraction and Pikachu then joins the underwater party. Luca gets closer to the treasure but is stopped by Remoraid who also prevent Pikachu from shocking Mantine so the group retreat again provoking Team Rocket to capture Mantine. Misty now joins the party along with her Water Pokémon, since Team Rocket are getting attacked by Mantine the group decide to let them serve as their distraction so they can all check the ship. A hoard of baby Remoraid are discovered, and the two Remoraid that attacked Luca and Pikachu before are the parents. Team Rocket crash through the ship and steal the chest with the Silver Wing, Mantine attacks and is caught with a sticky line but the Remoraid free it as they and Mantine live and work together in symbiosis. Ash and Misty’s Pokémon save the Mantine and Remoraid from Team Rocket’s net and in return Mantine helps Ash to catch up with Team Rocket so Pikachu can blow up the sub and leaps above the surface of the water to retrieve the Silver Wing. The Pokémon say goodbye to the group and return to their home, the Silver Wing is still inside the chest after all these years and Luca’s mission is complete, she drops the group off at Red Rock Isle where the Whirl Cup competition will be taking place. My favourite Quote: Jessie: “Alright then, now it’s Out with the minimum effort, maximum profit plan, and now In with the slightly more work than before but still pretty good plan!” Things I’d like to point out: Why is Misty stating they missed the boat once the group reach the port? It was obvious enough from the high vantage point that this was the case. The title pun comes from the term “Man Overboard”. Is Luca serious about the name of her ancestor’s ship; I.S.S Raspberry? He can’t have been taken seriously with a name like that. It’s the return of the Magikarp sub and Wobbuffet gets to ride inside for once, before it’s recalled anyway. Misty shouldn’t have been able to just open the Pokédex and get the entry she needed, shouldn’t it only do that if the Pokémon is in close proximity? Unless Brock’s mention of Mantine activated it even though this was before Misty turned the ‘Dex on. Pikachu has a bigger advantage against Mantine than the group think, Mantine’s a Water And Flying Pokémon, so an Electric attack would deal a double super effective hit. Luca is overprepared to have tiny Pokémon-sized diving gear unless it’s for a really young child. I suppose the Remoraid and Mantine pairing has something to do with the concept in the games where Remoraid are apparently known to cling to Mantine looking for leftovers. And Team Rocket wonder why they have no money, there was no need at all to install an underwater projector into the Magikarp sub, what were the chances they’d need to show the motto to someone in a diving suit? Don’t answer that; just consider the point that it’s a waste of money, however it was funny and a slightly different way to perform the motto. I know the underwater gear lets the user communicate but shouldn’t it only be to other users and possibly Luca’s ship? I say this because surely Jessie shouldn’t have heard Luca’s theory on the symbiosis of the Mantine and Remoraid unless the equipment broadcasts what she says at a loud volume. Pikachu’s voice shouldn’t have been heard from above the surface of the water, I think it would have been a nice change just to interrupt Pikachu as soon as the viewpoint was above water and just have the light and build up sound effects before the explosion. Why does Brock say that Luca can prove the sunken ship is true when the simple fact Luca’s ancestor had a crew proves that side of things, it’s the existence of the Silver Wing that he wanted to prove. Who’s That Pokémon?: (This Pokémon has an I.Q. of 5,000!) Alakazam Cameos in Pokémon Journey: None as yet. Octillery The Outcast Pokémon seen: Pikachu, Togepi, Meowth, Chansey, Kingler, Wooper, Poliwhirl, Poliwag, Golduck, Marill, Remoraid, Corsola, Octillery, Totodile, Seel, Magikarp, Shellder, Seaking, Wobbuffet, Weezing, Staryu Story: The group reach Scarlet City on Red Rock Isle where the Whirl Cup competition will take place and both Ash and Misty are psyched to battle and confident in winning. The two have to register for the preliminary rounds while Team Rocket plan on stealing Pokémon to open a water park and make money. The two are given directions to the stadiums for the preliminaries, and after 2 rounds, 64 successful trainers will then be able to compete in the Whirl Cup. The group meet a kid called Marcellus who pleads for them to battle with his Remoraid so it might evolve into an Octillery, this is because the arena has both water and platforms above the surface and Octillery can battle on both. Misty eventually accepts since she welcomes the opportunity to train her Corsola. Mirror Coat deflects Water Gun and Corsola misses a Tackle, Remoraid disappears and reappears on a tall wave and hits Corsola with a Water Gun. Remoraid wins and as a result it evolves into Octillery, Marcellus thanks them and leaves shortly after. The next day comes and the preliminaries go ahead, Totodile battles a Seel and dances its way around Ice Beams and takes out the enemy in one go, Poliwhirl beats a pathetic Magikarp, Totodile battles a Shellder and Corsola beats a Seaking after recovering from an attack and ramming the enemy hard. Ash and Misty safely get into the qualifying rounds but they see a disappointed Marcellus afterwards who reports his loss; he invites the group to his place where many Remoraid are kept in tanks. It’s revealed that Marcellus’s Octillery is now shunned by the others who used to treat it like their leader, this is due to its new appearance, its feelings of loneliness and sadness affected its match and Marcellus doubts Octillery will ever be able to battle again in this state. The group steps in to help, Ash is dressed up like an Octillery to befriend it but it’s insulted by this and blasts Ash with Water Gun. Team Rocket sneak into the large mansion at night and vacuum the Remoraid into a truck while Octillery remains hidden, Marcellus and the group catch them in the act and Octillery clings to the truck while Weezing assists Team Rocket’s escape, Octillery deliberately spits a trail of puddles for the group to follow. The Rockets are about to move the tank onto a ship when Octillery attacks Meowth and then the others, while the Remoraid watch as it does so and then smashes the tank they’re in so they can escape into the ocean. The others catch up but Meowth finally catches Octillery with the crane he’s been trying to grab it with several times, but the Remoraid spin the entire thing and give Octillery a soft landing when it’s released and takes a fall, having realised that this is still their old friend and leader. Pikachu does away with Team Rocket and Octillery takes the finishing shot with Octazooka attack. The Pokémon are friends again and Marcellus can now do better in the next Whirl Cup but just then the rest of the Remoraid evolve so that they can be the same as their friend. In the morning the qualifying trainers stand above the arena and watch as preparations for the tournament go ahead... My favourite Quote: (Wobbuffet appears from its Pokéball as always) Wobbuffet: “Wobba!... Wobba!...” Jessie: “Don’t they make Pokéballs with locks?...” Things I’d like to point out: Why does Team Rocket consider the Whirl Cup trophy useless? They’ve stolen items of less value and the trophy turns out to be the Mystic Water pendant, a rare object and probably worth a lot. But if the tournament is called the Whirl Cup, shouldn’t the prize be a trophy? Why is Brock so concerned that Ash might wear out his Pokémon battling Marcellus if the preliminaries are the next day? A good night’s sleep at a Pokémon Centre seems to cure virtually any wound or injury based on past episodes, and Corsola is healed in time even though it was knocked unconscious in battle. Why does Marcellus claim what the group are looking at will be the way the arena is set up? What he’s seemingly imagining is what will be used. If Remoraid went through the trouble of making a huge wave, why didn’t it just bring it down on Corsola for a Surf attack instead of a lesser attack like Water Gun? As far as the battle went, Corsola’s performance under Misty’s direction was a major disappointment. Another episode where introductions are seemingly skipped, I say that because the group somehow know Marcellus’s name only during the second time they see him. Is Ash completely sure he hasn’t seen so many Remoraid? Don’t the ones in “The Light Fantastic” mean anything to him? Ash is an idiot, when he disguises himself as an Octillery he imitates one and then asks what everyone thinks, yet when he speaks to Octillery he speaks normally so obviously Octillery isn’t going to believe he’s another Octillery and must have thought Ash was mocking him, contrary to Misty’s suggestion. Even though Wobbuffet’s upper lip lowers down during the motto, its tongue appears to rise in size as it’s all that can be seen as Wobbuffet opens its mouth two more times. Not that this is the first time but Wobbuffet shouldn’t make the Pokéball popping open sound unless it appears from its Pokéball or even from offscreen, but it makes the sound simply by rising up when the top of its head could already be seen. Unless some are somehow concealed, there are considerably less Remoraid in Team Rocket’s tank than there were before even though Team Rocket were said to have stolen All the Remoraid. When the glass shatters, the hole in the tank seems very small and therefore dangerous as the Remoraid could cut themselves on the glass while I assume they are rushing to get out before the water level drops too low to swim out. Again Meowth says something based on the Jetsons and using James’s name to pull it off, Meowth says “James! Get me off this t’ing!” which is similar to “Jane! Get me off this crazy thing!” Meowth had virtually the same line give or take a couple of words back in “The Flame Pokémon-athon”. I hope the lowering of the tides in the arena is an annual event, as it wouldn’t be wise to hold a competition here if the tide could rise back up at any given time. Who’s That Pokémon?: (This Pokémon is the final evolution of Hoppip!) Jumpluff Cameos in Pokémon Journey: None. Dueling Heroes Pokémon seen: Pikachu, Togepi, Dragonair, Lapras, Magikarp, Remoraid, Golduck, Staryu, Poliwrath, Seaking, Tentacruel, Gyarados, Quagsire, Slowpoke, Meowth, Wobbuffet, Squirtle, Psyduck, Marill, Totodile, Bayleef, Azumarill, Wartortle, Kingdra, Qwilfish, Corsola, Poliwag Story: The Whirl Cup opening ceremony begins with a grand speech by the sea priestess Mia, who owns a staff called the Sea Spirit which can apparently communicate with Water Pokémon. Team Rocket work as peanut vendors and forge a scheme to confiscate the staff for themselves. The staff emits a blue shining glow to end the opening and the competition begins, the prize for winning the tournament along with the title Water Pokémon Alpha Omega is a Mystic Water pendant. Ash forgets he only has Totodile, and will need a second Pokémon for the third round, he must send a Pokémon back since he has a full team and Oak requests he send Bayleef so he can study it. It doesn’t go well as Bayleef is unfamiliar with the lab and with Oak and goes on a stampede. The tournament is in full swing and Misty enjoys simply watching the Water Pokémon matches. Ash’s battle is up and Totodile faces a Kingdra (who enters the match in style), Totodile dives underwater but Kingdra sets up a Twister attack to create a whirlpool that drags Totodile in. It recovers but takes a fall and barely avoids Water Gun on the way down, Kingdra uses Hydro Pump but Totodile manages to dance its way through the spiralling attack but misses its Skull Bash attack. Underwater Kingdra clouds the field with Smokescreen so Totodile gets back onto the central platform. It gets bored of waiting and of the battle itself, Kingdra rises up suddenly but Totodile clamps its snout shut and it’s blocked Hydro Pump builds up inside and sends Kingdra flying around from the build up of water and is dazed when it finally lands. Team Rocket are exhausted from their job and plan on getting the staff and selling it, only Jessie has changed her mind and wants it for herself, their employer gets them working some more. That night Misty can’t sleep due to her excitement of being part of an event like this, the next day Misty battles in her first round, her Corsola is up against Qwilfish, Mirror Coat deflects the initial Water Gun and deals the first hit, Brock is worried about the knowledge Misty’s opponent has of Corsola, like its Rock-type side, Qwilfish sucks in water to expand its body and enhance the speed of its Pin Missile attack. Team Rocket sneak up on Mia but miss the staff and quickly cover up for their being there when Officer Jenny questions them. Qwilfish is almost ready to fire so Misty has Corsola use Spike Cannon, the two attacks explode on each other and Corsola goes flying while Qwilfish avoids damage by diving underwater. Qwilfish takes a full on Take Down before using Recover, it heals in time but can’t move so soon after recovery, luckily Qwilfish gets caught in Corsola’s horns, it scurries around the field before coming to Misty, who has it use Spike Cannon from the closest range, it’s defeated after it lands from a great height. Misty is ecstatic about her win, while Jessie hints that she’s not giving up on getting the Sea Spirit staff. Ash and Misty congratulate each other on their wins right before the shocking discovery that they will be facing off against each other in the next round... My favourite Quote: Misty’s attention is focussed solely on watching the Water Pokémon matches) Brock: “Misty I’ve never seen you this excited before. Uh, don’t worry about ignoring me; I’ll just hang out with Pikachu and Togepi...” Things I’d like to point out: Brock’s claims that a Mystic Water pendant enhances Water attacks are true, but how does it work in the cartoon with Hold Items introduced from the second set of games onwards? We’ve not seen Pokémon hold anything during battle so does the trainer wearing the pendant emit something to enhance Water attacks perhaps? Misty’s words don’t make sense, firstly who is ‘they’? And what does she mean about Bubblebeam not being necessary, it was just used by Azumarill which just won it the match so it would have been simpler just to have Misty impressed by the strategy or strength of the attack. How did Totodile dodge a Water Gun in the middle of plummeting? It didn’t spin or change its downward direction so I’m thinking Kingdra was just a bad shot. Unless Water Pokémon create water rather than store it, Kingdra inflating to the point its stomach grows is wrong, its head and beak maybe should inflate if they can’t get the water out but if it stores water inside itself then why would its chest grow unless the trapped water filled up what theoretically should have water already? I think the name of the fisherman Harrison is going to be disregarded seeing as a more frequent and memorable character with the same name shows up in the final episodes of the season. I know more than one person in the Pokémon World here and there will have the same name but TV programmes don’t usually repeat a name used before unless they have to. I know I dislike it when character names from my story are later used on one episode characters in the TV series, which is why I made up a different and unusual name for the main character rather than go with a real one that might someday be used on an unimportant character. Oh dear, Misty is kissing her Pokéball much like Gary used to, we find out later just how special the Pokémon Gary uses are to him, however Misty has only had Corsola for a couple of days and she’s only used it a couple of times, so what’s her excuse (especially since she only does it here)? Still, when it’s a girl kissing a Pokéball it seems a little more appropriate and less silly than if a guy did it, probably because girls traditionally kiss when meeting friends/family and guys usually shake hands instead. At last, correct information on Mirror Coat; Brock’s claims Pin Missile can’t be countered by it are true (but not because Qwilfish sent a particularly powerful one at Corsola), because Pin Missile is a Bug-type attack and relies on physical strength, and Mirror Coat can only deflect special attacks. A time delay for the Pokémon who used Recover is suddenly placed in the series, although Corsola didn’t seem to have any problems with this in earlier episodes. Either way it’s not a factor in the fanfic since the main character’s Pokémon uses Recover and I’ve played around with Recover needing no interruption to complete an effective cure, and I don’t plan on changing that version now. It feels odd that only 8 matches seemed to occur on Day One of the Whirl Cup (even when considering the opening ceremony) but all other first round matches were done within the second day. If 64 trainers were shortlisted for the tournament, then there should be a total of 32 matches in the first round, and so it would have been better to divide them equally and dub Misty and Harrison’s first match of the day as Match 17. I don’t feel anything when the narrator questions how Ash and Misty will bring themselves to battle each other to make the setting dramatic, the two snipe at each other most of the time and get into fights with ease, plus they’ve battled before... Twice! Clearly it’s not exactly that big a deal that these two are facing off against each other since they have mentioned many times it’s something they wanted to do, although maybe they didn’t actually believe the odds they would be put against each other would actually come to pass given their expressions. Who’s That Pokémon?: (This Pokémon uses its hand-like tail to grab things!) Aipom Cameos in Pokémon Journey: None. The Perfect Match! Pokémon seen: Pikachu, Togepi, Meowth, Wobbuffet, Poliwhirl, Totodile, Kingler, Psyduck, Bayleef, Gyarados, Corsola, Chinchou, Feraligatr, Golduck Story: The next round of the Whirl Cup begins, with Ash and Misty’s battle about to begin. Officer Jenny warns Mia that an anonymous caller stated the staff would be theirs by the competition’s end, but Mia explains there have been threats in the past and that the staff has always been kept safe. Jessie figures all the guards will be near the staff and that’ll they’ll nab the staff from above. Poliwhirl battles Totodile, dodging Water Gun and diving in before closing in on Totodile, it leaps out and blasts it with Bubble attack to daze Totodile. It recovers and ducks a Doubleslap to use Skull Bash; Poliwhirl bounces off a column, successfully dodges Water Gun and gets the Doubleslapping which shoots Totodile into a column and back down onto the platform to defeat it. Ash then uses Kingler and Poliwhirl fights on against the new opponent, Bubble attack is blocked by Kingler’s claws and Crabhammer hits Poliwhirl hard and creates several whirlpools and tidal waves from the shock, Crabhammer is used again to devastate Poliwhirl’s health. As the whirlpools and waves subside, Misty plans to use Corsola, but Psyduck leaps onto the field (or more precisely into the water) and it’s counted as Misty’s second Pokémon. Kingler swims fast towards a scared Psyduck and traps it with Vice Grip but foolishly holds it by the head, Psyduck gets a headache and Confusion blasts Kingler into Ash and into defeat. Ash talks to Oak in the evening where Bayleef is eager to return home, a trainer called Trinity who’s battling tomorrow introduces herself to Misty and wishes her luck. The next day, Misty’s Poliwhirl faces Trinity’s fearsome Gyarados, while Team Rocket are still waiting for the opportunity to strike at the staff. Bubble fails to Hyper Beam completely and Poliwhirl is immediately taken out, Corsola is able to use Mirror Coat against Hydro Pump, but Hyper Beam tears right through the attack. Corsola dives underwater at the last moment and strikes with Spike Cannon before Gyarados can get underwater. Trinity next uses a Chinchou and shoots electricity into the sky which rains down on Corsola who uses Mirror Coat to send it back, but Chinchou appears completely unharmed while Corsola still takes damage while using Mirror Coat and is fatigued by the Electric damage. Chinchou uses Confuse Ray but Corsola dives in the water, Chinchou’s tentacles lower into the water and the rays hit Corsola and confuse it after landing on a column, Water Gun knocks it down and Trinity wins as a result. Team Rocket are still waiting and Jessie decides to steal the staff tomorrow, that evening in the Pokémon Centre Trinity comes to check on Misty who offers her opponent her full support. Trinity battles Feraligatr with Golduck the next day but Team Rocket strike then in their balloon, attempting to hook the staff on a fishing line, Pikachu’s shock breaks the wire and everyone is alerted to them, Mia is confident the staff won’t leave its home and Team Rocket are hit by four simultaneous Water Guns, and an eventual Thunderbolt to defeat them. The group is thanked for defending the Sea Spirit and the tournament continues. The tournament is over after a total of six days and Trinity’s opponent is awarded the Mystic Water pendant and the title in the closing ceremony. Misty has one last talk with Trinity who isn’t disappointed about losing and promises to work even harder in preparation for the next Whirl Cup in three years, and Ash and Misty are glad to have been a part of it. My favourite Quote: Brock: “One thing I never have trouble remembering is the face of a pretty girl. This book helps me with their names...” (Brock flicks through the guidebook during the latter half of sentence and Misty exhales in annoyance) Things I’d like to point out: It’s proven in this episode that the red and green backgrounds for the trainers’ pictures on the scoreboard is dependant on which side of the field they are on, Ash was in the green and Misty in the red but in this round they switch colours, Ash becomes red while Misty gets a green background which she remains with in the third round as well. Misty doesn’t have what it takes to be a Pokémon Master, Water Pokémon maybe but not all types for as long as she specialises in only Water Pokémon and despises virtually all Bug Pokémon. Poliwhirl’s so-called ‘close range’ Bubble attack didn’t seem any closer than the distance used in the past, blasting the opponent from right up close would be my idea of a close range attack. Why is Misty at all surprised Ash is using Kingler, she’s been with Ash from virtually the very start and therefore knows Ash has only owned four Water Pokémon, and that two of them are no longer with him. Crabhammer’s visualisation and form has been altered, instead of physically slamming its claw against the opponent, it bashes the water and sends a glowing projectile forward. However, Crabhammer is surprisingly a Water based attack, not physical, so I’ve no complaints with the alternate visualisation. This episode indicates a mistake made in “Dueling Heroes” in which Ash said trainers needed two Pokémon from the third round onwards. It’s the second round and Ash and Misty use two Pokémon so I don’t think someone read the guidebook thoroughly. Speaking of which, since the display screens have three spaces per side, it suggests that the later battles in the Whirl Cup or possibly just the final match involve three-on-three battles, if that’s so then Ash wouldn’t have been able to properly compete unless he borrowed one of Misty’s Pokémon, but if the rare possibility that Ash and Misty faced each other in the final match occurred then Ash would have been screwed as I’m sure she wouldn’t give him a good Water Pokémon if at all. Pikachu was wearing a red (and black) cheering robe in the last episode which was during two days, but from the third day onwards in this episode, it’s decided to acquire a pink (and white) one. It’s one thing to have the robe in the first place but a second one? Are the group buying them so Pikachu can cheer them on and if so does Ash approve of the girlish colouring since Pikachu is clearly cheering for him? Ash should have known better than to attack Psyduck anywhere near its head, he’s known about Psyduck’s power trigger from the very start and even avoided damaging Psyduck when Ash and Misty battled in “Who gets to keep Togepi?”. The writers haven’t thought the script through, that or they failed maths, it’s the third round so that means there are 16 trainers left, if this round lowers them down to 8, that means the forth round makes it 4, the fifth down to 2 and the final match decides the overall winner. But according to the commentator, the winner of the third round goes to the semi finals, but the semi finals should be in the fifth round, not the forth, am I right? This would easily have been sorted had they not mentioned the future rounds, or dubbed this as the forth round. Brock is wrong in saying Mirror Coat only works against Water attacks, and this is proven when in the same battle, Corsola redirects a Spark attack (for all the good it does). Only special attacks in general can be sent back by Mirror Coat and because Hyper Beam is a Normal attack (this is the first time Normal attacks are mentioned by the way) it falls into the physical attack list. This episode shows proof that there are cameras underwater, but since Trinity looks shocked when she sees Corsola, it shows the trainer probably has to take their eyes off the battlefield to see the underwater goings on and turn to the side and high above. Not exactly convenient, are they? Nor are they great for knowing the location of underwater Pokémon because the camera zooms in on them. A sight misquote from Brock, in that Chinchou aren’t just Water Pokémon that can use Electric attacks, they’re actually part Electric-type. Misty’s calling it “Electric.” seems to be referring to its type though, and luckily Corsola’s Rock side doesn’t negate Electric damage like the series used to insinuate or that’d count as a mistake. Brock’s theory that Pokémon using Mirror Coat are dealt a little damage from the attacks countered differs from the games in that Pokémon take on the full force of the attack and only if they survive the hit and then reflect it back successfully, the opponent is dealt double that damage. I don’t think Chinchou should have been immune to a double power Spark attack, it’s still a Water Pokémon, but this isn’t mentioned in favour of concentrating on Corsola’s condition. From the next set of games onwards Pokémon gain natural abilities, absorbing electricity is one of Chinchou’s so I’m thinking the writers knew that when they let this event happen, however, in the games Chinchou could do no such thing in Johto. I would think Confuse Ray would have to be seen to confuse, but Corsola is hit from behind by a very wide beam of energy and successfully confused regardless. I can’t believe not one of the security guards notices the balloon lowering down above them, much less the Wobbuffet lure dangling down towards the staff, what are those guys getting paid for to be getting outsmarted so easily?! If only official staff are allowed in the private balcony, how come Ash, Misty and Brock were able to barge past? Just because he stopped Team Rocket’s fishing line doesn’t make him an exception to the rule without recognition for his help and why he’s here. Ash is such a bully! Four Water Guns sent Team Rocket on their way, and he just Had to follow up with Thunderbolt to completely decimate their balloon, however, how did Pikachu hit them from so far away when former episodes have proven Pikachu does have a limit to how far its Electric attacks can reach? I’ve checked the episodes thoroughly and there seem to be many mistakes and bad choices involving the tournament, since this episode confirms the tournament lasts 6 days. The first 32 rounds take place in the first and second days, and the second round from the third day onwards; because the number of Pokémon double, I figure it would take twice as long meaning it would take two days and not one to cover the sixteen matches, and so Misty’s third round match should have theoretically taken place on the fifth day rather than being suggested it was on the day after her match with Ash (unless a significant time passed between the two events), if so, then the four quarter finals, the two semi finals, the final round match and finally the award ceremony should take place on the sixth and final day. Unfortunately, the dubbing of the tournament mixes things up a lot and makes little sense when trying to tie it all together into a logical list. Trinity’s opponent confuses me, since this isn’t likely to be the final match due to the timing, how is it that the Feraligatr trainer who is battling now seemingly goes on to win the entire tournament and yet Trinity is there next to him when he’s awarded the prize and not in the boats like the other combatants? Surely whoever he battled or the semi-finalists should all be present, unless he knows or grew to know Trinity and requested she be there with him at the winning ceremony. Who’s That Pokémon?: (This Pokémon’s tail is filled with oil!)
