Chapter 141: The Next Generation (Part B) by Michael Keens/Exodus The only place Ellie could find to be alone was in the corner between a doorway and a row of lockers, where she remained, scrunched up in a ball as she cried her eyes out. “How dare he humiliate me like that... Use me as an example of what he did as a trainer... I’m not like him!... I’m an individual and I shouldn’t have so much expected of me because I’m the daughter of a master train-” The door she was next to opened up and an old man stepped out and nearly fell over by tripping over her had she not leapt up onto her feet and caught him. “I’m so sorry Sir, I didn’t mean to-” “It’s quite all right, no harm done...” said the man, his hair was brown with stripes of grey areas, and he was wearing a colourful purple suit, “Are you a student here? I don’t recall your face...” “I’m not a student, no. I just needed to get some space.” “Your hair, your eyes, you’re not Tetsubo’s daughter by any chance, are you?” asked the surprised old man. “Yeah yeah, but I’m sick of being compared to him.” Ellie muttered. “Why? Because of his fame? I wasn’t trying to compare you, I just vaguely remember you, he brought you here when you were just a baby around, seventeen, eighteen years ago, did he not?” “I think you must be mistaken Sir, I’m only fifteen.” Ellie answered. “I must be getting old and senile, but I do remember how happy he looked, he really wanted to pass on his teachings to his children, and I presume he’s done so with you.” inquired the man. “Yes Sir, but not out of choice, Dad can’t help but force his lessons upon me.” Ellie sighed. “He’s still the same kid I taught years ago, he was the sort of student everyone looked up to, he always loved to help others and he was a model student representing everything one could become with determination and study.” mused the man. “I realise that too Sir, he must have had it so easy back then that he doesn’t realise how hard it is for me in the situation I’m stuck in. Everyone worships him now as they probably did twenty five years ago but I’m tired of having the same expectations focused on me.” Ellie continued to moan. “Actually-” A school bell went off and the distant sounds of students moving around and chattering could be heard. “I should go, but thanks for listening.” Ellie smiled. “My pleasure Child, sorry to ask, but I don’t recall your name, I haven’t worked at this college in ten years.” “It’s Ellie.” “Ellie... Well, I’m Mr Takanichi, and I’ll remember your name. I heard that you wanted to compete in Hoenn?” “Yes Sir.” “I plan on moving there soon; perhaps I’ll see you again. Don’t let your father’s reputation get you down, just do the best job you can in your own way, and that will be enough for you and your father.” “Thank you.” Ellie hurried off as the halls filled with students before anyone recognised her from earlier, and before Tetsubo and Rick appeared. “Mr Takanichi? It’s been a while!” smiled Tetsubo, offering a handshake with his old teacher, “I know this is a long shot but have you seen my daughter around? I need to talk with her.” “Yes I did in fact, but I’d give the girl some space, it can’t be easy having such a success to live up to.” “I know, but I’m determined not to let her fail as a trainer in any way and get as down as I did back when I studied here. Even though the situation was much different, I almost gave up on my dreams once. And as for sheltering her all these years, even though Team Rocket disbanded years ago, I’m worried that they might use Ellie to get revenge on me for all our past encounters, and then there’s...” Tetsubo explained, trailing off at the end. “Perhaps you should tell Ellie that.” Takanichi stated. “But if she knows of the Rockets, then having that sort of information could endanger her.” “This seems familiar.” sighed Rick, “Remember the last time you withheld secrets from someone about Team Rocket?” “I remember...” Tetsubo sighed, “Maybe I should come clean and explain to Ellie why we’ve safeguarded her for so long...” Ellie met up with Calvin outside, and he’d calmed down from before, “Ellie, I’m sorry I laughed, I’m your friend and I should have controlled myself.” “I hate it when you apologise, it means I have to forgive you because I can’t stay mad at you when you look at me with those pathetic puppy eyes.” Ellie sighed with a moody expression. “So we’re good? That Pokémon of yours sure is strange, what is it?” “I’ll check, Dad gave me his old Pokédex the other day, and it’s upgraded to scan Pokémon from the Hoenn area where our new Pokémon came from. The only thing I have to do is register it in my name and sponsor to enter the tournament, but I can still scan Pokémon. Let’s try it...” With that, Calvin and Ellie released their Pokémon and she scanned them both, the Pokédex computer voice had been changed to female by Ellie’s choice: “Kecleon, the Color Swap Pokémon. This Pokémon is capable of blending in with its surroundings, but the zigzag pattern on its belly will always be visible, even when a Kecleon is camouflaged” “Wailmer, the Ball Whale Pokémon. This hefty Pokémon can fight on land provided it stores water inside its body; the water can also be used to help it bounce. Its nostrils are located above its eyes, from which it can snort out water.” Immediately after the scan was done, the Kecleon had disappeared already, and Ellie once again had to point the Pokéball around until she found and recalled it. “This is all Dad’s fault, if he hadn’t made such an event of my getting a Pokémon, I wouldn’t have shouted, and Kecleon wouldn’t be disappearing on me.” “‘Kecleon’? What happened to you wanting to be different?” “I do... How about I name it... Sneak?” “Not bad, not good either but- I’m kidding!” wailed Calvin as Ellie raised a hand to hit him, not that she would have done it hard. “Hey, let’s get out of here and have our first Pokémon Battle with each other! You up for it? It might even get that Kecleon’s act together!” “Sure...” Ellie said, rushing out of the college with Calvin. They stopped outside the college in one of the misty fields that surrounded it, and drew out their only Pokéballs. “Go Titanic!” “Go Sneak!” “Waiiil...” “Leeeon...” “Titanic, time for our first battle, but take it easy, Ellie’s a friend.” “Sneak? Let’s do this, let’s rectify things and battle hard.” “Leeon?...” it questioned, looking around. “Sneak is Your name now, and you’re My Pokémon, not Dad’s, so please don’t get all unruly on me, please battle...” As she turned to face Calvin, Ellie realised she didn’t know her Pokémon’s attacks, she knew of many kinds of attacks and types, but not what a Kecleon knew, it was then that she noticed a small sticker on the Pokéball, no doubt from her dad. “Kecleon’s attacks.” she read out loud, “Thief, Tail Whip, Astonish and Lick, plus the ability to become invisible.” Ellie knew there’d be additional attacks to come, but only if she trained her Kecleon, the Pokédex could probably tell her more. “Titanic, use Rollout!” called Calvin. With that the Wailmer scrunched itself into a ball, and jetted towards Sneak really fast, snorting water out of its blowhole at certain moments to propel it. “Sneak, turn invisible and dodge it!” called Ellie. It did so immediately, and Ellie couldn’t believe it was obeying her so soon after their joke of a first meeting, the Wailmer circled round, but couldn’t see what Ellie could, that even when a Kecleon turned transparent, the red zigzag on its chest was still visible. “Okay, now reappear and use Lick!” cheered Ellie raising her clenched fists in delight. She waited a while for a response, but got nothing, and Sneak remained transparent, “I can see you so don’t pretend you can’t hear me, turn back!” “Hah!” laughed Calvin, noticing its position because of Ellie’s line of sight, “Titanic! Water Gun!” “Wail!...” it shouted, a jet of water shooting out its blowhole and drenching her Kecleon, making it appear now. “Why didn’t you listen? Do you want to be smacked around?!” shouted Ellie. “Leeon...” it said nervously, raising its arms in front of it defensively and shaking its head in fear, Ellie figured it had probably misinterpreted her words and thought she’d be the one hitting it. “It’s over Girl! I know Sneak’s technique now, Rollout!” The large Wailmer rolled forward again, tearing up the grass wherever it went, and upon hitting Ellie’s Kecleon, it went flying into the air and landed hard, which made her decide to recall it early. “I forfeit, Sneak’s not listening to me... You win...” Ellie’s head was pointed down and she was fighting the urge to cry at how wrong things were going until Calvin put a hand on her shoulder. “I’m sorry ‘Elle’... I didn’t mean to embarrass you, as soon as you get another Pokémon, I’ll battle you again.” “But what about This Pokémon? How am I supposed to catch others if I can’t rely on Sneak?...” Ellie whined. “I’ll catch one for you, any Pokémon you want. How’s about that?” offered Calvin genuinely. “Don’t pity me... I don’t want your charity...” Ellie scowled. “If you say so Elle, look, I’m gonna scoot off home and finish packing my things, you should too since the boat to Hoenn leaves tonight...” Calvin smiled before making his way towards transportation to his home in Saffron City. She nodded and, with a saddened expression, turned to walk the opposite path, hoping things would get better soon... At home, Ellie was all ready to go, just like her father she had multiple copies of the outfit she was wearing (a common thing for trainers though Ellie heard they were sometimes accused of never changing or washing their clothes), and some Pokémon equipment, all put into one bag with many pockets and enough room for new things. She still couldn’t quite get over the fact that she’d finally be able to leave and go somewhere without her parents watching over her. Downstairs, Tetsubo was preparing to go with her to see Professor Blossom, she’d met her plenty of times, and today’s visit in the Cerulean Pokémon Centre would only be brief, she’d type in some data into the Pokédex (already registered in Ellie’s name) to register her as her sponsor so that she could send Pokémon to her, and then Ellie and her parents would go straight down to Vermilion City in the car to board the boat. “Is Ellie still upset about earlier, I didn’t see her come in, she bolted right up to her room without saying anything.” inquired Emily as Tetsubo arrived home. “A little. Apparently her Pokémon not listening to her is completely my fault.” sighed Tetsubo. “I don’t believe that, you did your best to give her a Pokémon with enough attacks to keep her safe, maybe its level has something to do with it, you always said that high level Pokémon sometimes don’t respect the trainer they’re with.” defended Emily. “It’s completely different, Ellie got into a row while her Pokémon was out and I think she scared it, I’d always told that Kecleon that it’d be going to a kind and caring trainer, and Ellie is that, when she’s not in one of her moods.” replied Tetsubo. “You should get her, we should leave now so that we have enough time for a proper goodbye.” suggested Emily. “I will, and- Turn that up.” said Tetsubo suddenly, referring to the active but muted TV. “... So after extensive proof that not only Team Rocket are operating again, but the two other criminal groups, Team Aqua and Team Magma, new trainers in the Hoenn area are urged to travel together with others, to keep a watchful eye on their Pokémon, to stay away from the groups and to notify the police of any suspicious activity.” “Oh no...” Ellie was feeling much better about things when her dad knocked on the door, Ellie’s bag was already hanging off her shoulders and the Pokéball was firmly in her hand. “Okay, let’s go Dad.” she said with a huge smile on her face. “Wait Ellie, we need to talk.” Tetsubo said with a glum look. “But we’ll be late for-” “Sit Ellie.” said Tetsubo firmly, motioning for his daughter to sit on the bed with him, “Ellie, you have to know this, your mother and I have only sheltered you to such an extent because we love you...” “I know that and I accept that, it’s shaped who I am and-” “But there’s another reason. Back when I was an active Pokémon Trainer, I constantly crossed paths with members of an evil organisation called Team Rocket, and as you can tell with my being here right now, I always survived, and pretty much ruined a large bunch of their schemes to steal Pokémon or make money, it’s because of them... and my fame... that I figured you might become a target, that they might take you away just to get to me.” “So what happened to them? You haven’t talked about these Rocket people before.” questioned a curious Ellie, she never thought of her dad as a hero like everyone else seemed to think but maybe this had something to do with it. “They disbanded.” answered Tetsubo bluntly. “So there’s no problem, I can go on my journey and-” “And now they’re active again, so-” “No.” Ellie interrupted for once in the conversation, “You can’t be about to say what I think you’re about to say.” “Ellie...” said Tetsubo, speaking the dreaded words, “I can’t let you go to Hoenn, that’s where not only Team Rocket are now, but two other organisations that could seriously put your life in danger. Once the police deal with them all, then you can go, in the meantime, you have to stay here in Kanto.” “No! You can’t do this! Not after I waited three years just so I was prepared for training Pokémon in your eyes! I bet Calvin and the others aren’t being asked to stay!” Ellie screamed. “That’s because they have a Pokémon they can trust, you don’t have that yet.” Tetsubo said calmly. “Sure I do!” Ellie shouted, releasing the Kecleon, ”We’re right as rain!” It vanished immediately and could be heard scuttling around the room, “As if rain is ever right.” she cursed in thought. “I’m sorry Ellie, someday you’ll understand why I’m doing this and be thankful for it...” said Tetsubo, leaving the room. Without him, she couldn’t get Blossom’s permission to make Ellie her sponsored trainer, and without that, Ellie couldn’t train Pokémon without the risk of being found by the police and escorted right back home... Ellie cried so much within a short space of time, the thought that she’d be stuck here while the only people left that she could consider her friends went off to train Pokémon, even if Ellie did train Pokémon later, she might not have anyone to do it with, and that would only fuel Tetsubo’s excuses for not letting her go at all. Ellie wiped her tears away and picked up the bag, “It’s now or never...” Tetsubo slowly walked down the stairs to see his wife in the living room. “By the shouting I heard, I’d say you told her.” Emily said with a slight sad expression. “You don’t think I’m too harsh do you? Not letting her train Pokémon because of Team Rocket?...” questioned Tetsubo with a slightly miserable look. “No Tetsubo, I don’t, I understand very well how dangerous Team Rocket can be, there’s been plenty of times they nearly got us killed in one way or another, and Ellie’s just as stubborn as you so she’d surely get involved and play the heroine given the chance.” comforted Emily, “I’m just surprised she agreed to stay here so quickly.” “... Actually...” said Tetsubo nervously, “Technically, she didn’t agree, I just told her everything and left her alone to think.” “Tetsubo, you can be a fool sometimes.” said Emily bluntly, causing Tetsubo to turn to her with a questionable look, “She’s your daughter, and she’s inherited all the stubbornness and determination you once had, do you really think she’ll just accept this? You should have made Ellie give her word not to go.” “Uh oh... Then that noise I heard when I was coming down the stairs might not have been a loud attempt to catch her Kecleon...” Ellie’s folks bolted up the stairs and pushed the door open, knocking the feeble barricade aside, and saw the curtains at the open window blowing furiously by the winds... Ellie ran and ran until she reached Vermilion City, she didn’t stop to attempt lying to Blossom in order to get sponsored by her, as her father would only wait at her place until Ellie transferred a Pokéball and then track her down. With any luck, she’d either find someone else to sponsor her, or just keep away from the police until the Hoenn League and just pay someone to alter the Pokédex data so that she could be admitted to the League when the time came. “Ellie, you look beat.” commented Calvin, “You should rest, the boat doesn’t leave for another five minutes, I’ll get you something to drink.” “No...” she panted, “No time... I want to get on the boat now...” “Where are your folks? Mine and the gang’s are up on the boat right now. We should all say goodbye together.” “It’s taken care of, I just want to find my cabin, get a little sleep, and enjoy the view of a night time voyage.” Ellie lied, pushing him forward onto the boat and then dashing away to find the cabin that matched the number on her ticket... The Captures’ car skidded to a halt, Tetsubo didn’t care that he’d be fined if the police saw how badly and the location the car was parked. Ellie’s folks dashed through the large town and down to the docks. “How could she just leave without saying goodbye?...” questioned Emily. “She won’t get far, not without a sponsor or proper I.D...” said Tetsubo optimistically. “Hey Tetsu!” called Rick, he was standing with his wife Aimee, Wanda’s guardians, Scott and Carrie, and Ellie’s ‘Uncle Cody’ and ‘Aunt Dani’, among many other strangers. “You’re cutting it close, where’s your daughter? We were saying our goodbyes to all our kids a while ago and I didn’t see you.” questioned Rick to his long- time friend. “We got pulled over on the way here for speeding, but it doesn’t matter right now, have you seen Ellie?” asked Tetsubo desperately. “Shouldn’t she be with you? The boat’s about to leave in less than a minute.” answered Rick with a question. Tetsubo frowned, and bolted down the path through the docks, but as the boat was sighted it was already leaving, and Ellie had successfully made it out of Kanto without being dragged back home. Tetsubo panted, and turned to one of the workers, “When’s... the next... boat... to Hoenn?...” “You just missed the boat, huh? I’m sorry but there’s not another one due to go there until next week.” Ellie’s father clenched a fist and cursed, the reason why they’d planned for a boat to Hoenn was because the nearby airlines were having problems and wouldn’t be flying to Hoenn for a while. All Tetsubo could do was return to Emily and break the news, while Ellie lay in her cabin bed, unable to sleep, a strange sensation running through her, she’d done it, she’d finally broken away from her forced shelter to live her life as she wanted, and it felt great...
