On the way, they meet Elekid, an Electric-type, who offers to help them find Togepi. The group of Pokémon cross some fairly dangerous paths, while Meowth has ended up down here and faces trouble of his own. Togepi is found among several nests of Exeggcute, who are fond of it and don’t want to see Togepi go, so Pikachu and the others leave it here for now and look around the area a little more. During which time they are treated to a song and dance from some Bellossom, wind up in a cave of Clefairy, and accidentally save Meowth from a Gyarados but send him flying. After that, dark clouds appear and the Exeggcute nests are in danger of being blown away by the storm. It’s up to Pikachu and the others to hold down the nests until it passes, but they end up needing the help of the other wild Pokémon to succeed. Pikachu, along with Elekid use their electricity to block off as many lightning bolts as they can, but one hits the trees and starts a fire, which Squirtle and Marill must put out. The nest with Togepi is blown away and every available Pokémon grabs a hold to save it, and thanks mainly to Pikachu and Snorlax, the nest is saved. The storm ends at the arrival of a rare Dragonair, and the missing Exeggcute is returned to its nest by Chansey, and an accidental dance around a Leaf Stone evolves them into an Exeggutor. The group of trained Pokémon say their goodbyes to the wild Pokémon and leave with Togepi to return to their trainers, who know nothing about this whole adventure and assume the Pokémon were relaxing the whole time. My favourite Event: Snorlax disregarding his duties in holding onto the blown away Pokémon in order to catch the apples flying by. But seeing a Dragonair fly by for the first time (since the episode we would originally have seen one in wasn’t aired in America or England) is a rare and almost rewarding event. Things I’d like to point out: Another impression from Pikachu after an absence of these in the series, today it’s Togepi. A huge mistake in that a Poliwhirl has the voice and dialogue of a Poliwrath, did it hit its head and get amnesia or something? Nope, it’s just the translators making a mess of things again. Before a movie goes out, the people behind it should really show it to the experts who know Pokémon the best to check for mistakes: The children, and the adults who haven’t quite grown up. A fact most people know but didn’t realise since they were in awe of seeing a Dragonair at last, Dragonair apparently have the ability to change the weather, so it was probably Dragonair that stopped the storm. The Power of One Pokémon seen: Slowking, Moltres, Lugia, Pikachu, Togepi, Lapras, Squirtle, Bulbasaur, Scyther, Venonat, Marill, Goldeen, Staryu, Psyduck, Charizard, Snorlax, Meowth, Magikarp, Pidgey, Mr Mime, Diglett, Nidorina, Paras, Zapdos, Articuno, Gyarados, Blastoise, Seaking, Tentacool, Slowbro, Seel, Ekans, Lickitung, Vaporeon, Poliwrath, Golduck, Seadra, Starmie, Fearow, Venomoth, Butterfree, Pidgeotto, Onix, Spearow, Nidoking, Golem, Nidoqueen, Hitmonlee, Caterpie, Weedle, Machamp, Rhyhorn, Parasect, Sandshrew, Tauros, Zubat, Machop, Cubone, Golbat, Grimer, Exeggutor, Voltorb, Vulpix, Ninetales, Geodude, Rapidash, Raticate, Venusaur, Oddish, Dodrio, Magnemite, Magneton, Kangaskhan, Horsea, Tentacruel, Raichu, Rattata, Alakazam, Victreebel, Arbok, Wigglytuff, Electabuzz, Pinsir, Tangela, Vileplume, Weezing, Kingler, Eevee, Clefairy, Nidoran Female, Nidoran Male, Drowzee, Pidgeot, Hypno, Shellder, Farfetch’d, Wartortle, Slowpoke, Poliwag, Poliwhirl, Primeape, Chansey, Doduo, Machoke, Growlithe, Bellsprout, Weepinbell, Ivysaur Story: A rich collector sits in a flying fortress and looks to catch the three Legendary Bird Pokémon, Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres, even though it defies an ancient prophecy. After catching Moltres with sophisticated machines, Lawrence the Third states that catching all three of the birds will bring about the appearance of the Legendary Water Guardian Lugia. Meanwhile, Ash and his friends ride Marin’s boat through the Orange Islands and get caught in a sudden storm that pulls them towards the Shamouti Islands while Team Rocket’s submarine slams into a cliff. Back in Pallet Town, Professor Oak and Mrs Ketchum notice the odd change in the weather, the fact that certain types of weather are occurring at the wrong time of year, and that they are happening very quickly and constantly changing. The group meet the residents of Shamouti Island who are performing the annual Legend Festival. Carol and Marin know each other and the group are introduced, Carol would normally play the part of the festival maiden but is too old now, so her younger sister Melody must play the role, and she chooses Ash to be the ‘Chosen One’. Misty is a little jealous of the attention Melody gives Ash but is too stubborn to admit her own feelings for him. Melody plays her role, and explains to Ash that he is to collect three ‘ancient’ spheres and to bring them back to Shamouti. Ash takes the role rather seriously, and rushes straight out towards the islands despite the storms, with Melody close behind and Team Rocket stowing away on Melody’s boat as she, Misty and Tracey chase after Ash, concerned about his safety. Professor Oak and Mrs Ketchum are aware of the source of the problems, as is Professor Ivy, and they are concerned for Ash as well. Ash and Marin have a minor accident, breaking the rudder of her boat, while on Melody’s ship, there are problems and Team Rocket goes flying away unnoticed. Ash retrieves the Sphere of Fire but encounters Team Rocket, who are thwarted by the appearance of Melody and the others. Zapdos appears and is able to communicate with Pikachu, and basically explains that since Moltres is gone, it’s taking over Fire Island. Before anything else can occur, the flying fortress appears and drains Zapdos’s electricity before capturing it, and then the whole group. While caged, Melody reads a tablet with the ancient prophecy on it, right before Lawrence greets the prisoners and boasts about his collection. He is called away when Articuno is sighted, and looks to capture it. Meanwhile, Professor Oak, Ivy and Mrs Ketchum and a news crew fly in a helicopter towards Shamouti Island, where Oak and Ivy explain the dangers arising and that the anomaly could have destructive results upon the world, while many Pokémon are gathering as close as they can because they can sense the changes in nature but otherwise it’s unexplainable. While Lawrence attempts to capture Articuno, Ash and his Pokémon free Moltres, who goes on to free Zapdos, and together they wreak havoc upon the floating fortress and bring it crashing down onto Lightning Island, where Ash retrieves another sphere. With the three birds fighting each other and wrecking the landscape and environment, the group flees while Lugia rises to the surface and saves them. Ash is guided by the talking Slowking on Shamouti Island to place the spheres into an ancient artifact, while Lugia makes itself known and combats the other birds but is ultimately defeated. The Slowking explains that they need the chosen one, before the group realise that the part of the ancient text that says “AND THE WORLD WILL TURN TO ASH.” doesn’t mean destruction, but the fact that Ash is the Chosen One. Melody realises that the sound Lugia makes is similar to her song, she plays her ocarina and restores Lugia’s strength, who tells Ash that he must go to Ice Island, retrieve the final sphere and return it here, as the spheres will stop this chaos but will only react in Ash’s hands. With his Pokémon, Ash hurries through the frozen water leading to Ice Island despite the danger of the three legendary Pokémon, while Team Rocket forge a plan to help out only after the chopper crashes. Ash’s ride is cut short and access seems impossible, but Team Rocket constructs a vehicle out of a dinghy and part of the chopper to help out. The final sphere is secured, but the vehicle is destroyed and Lugia must help Ash escape, while Team Rocket makes a sacrifice to ensure Ash succeeds in his quest. Lugia explains that the thousands of Pokémon are here in case they are needed, even though they aren’t sure how to help, if any of them could help, it would be worth the journey. Lawrence makes one final attempt to capture Lugia, but endangers Ash’s life in the process; Lugia destroys the floating fortress but sinks into the ocean, leaving Ash’s life hanging in the balance. Misty swims out and brings Ash back, and with what strength he has left, Ash trudges back up onto the island and places the final sphere. Melody plays her song and activates the ancient artifact, the storms disappear, the three birds are calmed and return to their respective homes and Lugia returns in good health. Ash has saved the world, and sees his mother again after such a long time, who was worried sick about him and wishes he could be the hero just a little closer to home. My favourite Quotes: Jessie: “Prepare for more trouble than you’ve ever seen.” James: “And make it double, we’re on the big screen.” Ash: “I’ll have to catch this on video!” (The Rockets have a shocked expression and nearly fall to the floor) Melody: “What if the ancient legend is coming true?” James: “If it is true all intelligent life will be destroyed.” Jessie: “That’s right.” James: “And I’ll be...” Meowth: “You... will be fine.” Ash: “Training Pokémon’s tough enough, but saving the world is Way too hard.” Misty: “I know it doesn’t sound easy, Ash.” Tracey: “But you’re the only one who matches the Legend perfectly. What do ya say?” Ash: “Well, right now I wish my mom had named me Bob instead o’ Ash.” Jessie: “Then I guess the bad guys...” James: “Are finally...” Meowth: “Good guys!” Jessie: “So then we’re not bad.” James: “That’s good.” Meowth: “What if the Boss finds out?!” James: “That’s bad.” Jessie: “We’ll start our own team.” James: “That’s good.” Meowth: “But we got no money.” James: “That’s bad.” Jessie: “Then we’ll just steal some!” James: “That’s good, or is that bad?” (Groans) When this takes place: The fact of the Pokémon seen in this movie and the way Ash gets on with Charizard proves that this story takes place after “Charizard Chills” but before Ash battles Drake for the Orange Cup since the group leave the Orange Islands almost immediately after that and Lapras leaves them. Also, Ash shows off the trophy whenever he can, so it’s obvious he hasn’t gotten it yet, plus the fact that Misty has yet to get herself a Poliwag, which is obtained one episode before the battle against Drake. Things I’d like to point out: The first thing is the villain, dubbed Lawrence the Third, but not in the length of the movie. Surely in a movie setting all of the characters should be named at least once, especially since character names aren’t even listed in the end credits. The computer claims that the Shamouti Islands are the only places where the Legendary Bird Pokémon reside, but this isn’t true, as Moltres has been seen in the Indigo Stadium a while back, and Articuno and Zapdos are set to make an appearance in the Johto series that follows the movie a lot later on. This is however the only time all three birds are shown together. ??? Also, what with Lugia making this movie, four out of five Legendary Birds are featured on the big screen, all except Ho-Oh. According to the computer diagram and a diagram on one of the news reports, Shamouti is located on the outskirts of the Orange Islands, not dead centre like Marin suggests, but the news report claims the disturbance is happening at the north central region of the islands, which is it? Some may think that attacking Moltres with ice blasts is useless because of its Fire side, but virtually all Flying-type Pokémon are weak against Ice attacks, so the weapons would be of some use. “An island...” “... In a storm...” “I’ve seen this movie.” Since there are a number of films with islands and storms and what not, if anyone knows specifically what movie Meowth is referring to in response to what Jessie and James say when Team Rocket’s sub approaches Shamouti, e-mail me and let me know. This would have been Ash’s first kiss from a girl, except he’s been kissed by both Jessie and James in disguise back in “Abra and the Psychic Showdown” (and technically probably his mother at some point throughout his life). However, this is I believe the only meaningful peck on the cheek (pun not intended what with all the bird costumes) he gets until the fifth movie, and clearly it’s something Misty wants to do but exclusively given her obvious jealousy for Melody. Okay, if you haven’t spotted this mistake, you’re not paying enough attention. When Ash and the group arrive on the island, only Ash’s name is introduced, but when Melody arrives, she calls Misty by her name, only her name was not given out nor does Melody know Misty. Everyone I know who’s seen the movie has pointed this out, even those who aren’t hugely into Pokémon. It’s doubtful Misty’s Gym Leader status is the reason her name is known considering how little she’s performed the role compared to her sisters who currently don’t even do so themselves. That and the fact that Melody asks if she’s Ash’s sister, and then if she’s his girlfriend, if her name was meant to be famous so too should be the fact she has no brothers. Finally there’s the scene where Misty tells Melody she comes from a Water Pokémon Gym, the way Melody looks in response suggests she didn’t know that already, so I’m sure Melody already knowing Misty’s name is a blatant script error. The icons on Oak’s computer screen are type/element symbols from the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Brock makes a brief cameo in this movie, he’s in the background when Ivy speaks to Oak, rushing around with panicked Pokémon, and during the end credits he’s standing in various poses again just behind Ivy. When travelling to the first island, the rudder on Marin’s boat falls off just before it hits the rock, view this scene in slow motion to see for yourself. It’s a nice touch when Lawrence briefly speaks of a Mew Card, of which was available to those who went to see the movie in the cinemas and of which I still own to this very day. Why did the cage that the group was in open up like it did, was it intentional, and why did Lawrence go off to catch Articuno when he was aware they were free? Did he not think they had Pokémon to free the birds with? Three first names are revealed in this movie, Ash’s mother; Delia Ketchum, Professor Samuel Oak and Professor Falina Ivy. Brock makes a brief cameo in this movie, he’s in the background when Ivy speaks to Oak, rushing around with panicked Pokémon, and during the end credits he’s standing in various poses again just behind Ivy. Once again, Ash rushes headlong into a situation and acts recklessly and quite frankly stupidly, running into a cage of any sort with your head will most likely not yield successful results, he’s not a Pokémon, who in the same scenario might destroy whatever it was charging at. Lawrence remains unusually calm as his fortress crashes down, it must have cost him so much, seeing as he has a painting of angelic figures on the ceiling and everything. How is Mrs Ketchum so sure that Ash is out in the storm, other than intuition, it takes some time to get to Shamouti Island so I doubt she could see him from the chopper. Though it looks as such, Lugia may not be using Hyper Beam on Lawrence’s fortress, Lugia doesn’t learn that attack naturally, but it does learn Aeroblast; its signature move and the most powerful Flying-type attack in all the games. 108 Pokémon! And it’s been hell listing them all from the army-like proportions seen in this movie; I hope someone appreciates all the hard work I went through to make this guide complete. I am So glad I decided to buy the DVD, or this would have taken even longer to complete without the freeze frame and slow motion options. I realise given the sheer number of Pokémon, I may have missed a couple but hopefully no more than ten, if anyone wants to help out or has spotted a Pokémon not on the list, give me an e-mail, and tell me at what part of the movie they’re seen (memorable events so that they’re easy to check please). Cameos in Pokémon Journey: None at the moment; to have Tetsubo repeat the events in the movie would just be boring, although Lawrence the Third might get a small cameo in the future.
