Chapter 2: Riding Waves (Part A) by Michael Keens/ Exodus After I managed to bond with my Pokémon, Twinkill, we had our sleep and in the morning my parents left for work and left me to start my journey. I packed an orange rucksack with my Pokéballs, supplies and Pokémon Credit Card, my Pokédex, and a couple of books, of course on the subject of Pokémon. I kept some essentials, brushing my spiky turquoise hair back along with the quiffs on the side, I put the brush and toiletries in the bag and some of my favourite matching green and blue clothes. It was time to go to the Safari Zone. I gave up Twinkill to the reception as the rules forced trainers only to use Safari Balls, bait and rocks. I took a strategic route looking for the elusive hut that everyone spoke of. I looked around carefully choosing which Pokémon to go for, then I saw something, a Nidorino. “Nidorino, the Poison Pin Pokémon. This ferocious Pokémon’s horn secretes a powerful venom, use caution when approaching one.” “Aw man, I’d like to have one of those on the team.” Throwing a rock towards it, I realised that I was totally in the open. “Riiinnnoooo!!!” it screamed chasing after me, I took off leaping over the small natural rocks on the ground while it charged straight through them. “Mental note.” I said to myself, “Never do that again!” Diving into the lake I looked up. Satisfied that I wouldn’t get back up, the Nidorino walked away, the currents dragged me back, to my horror, towards a large drop. “No, not the typical waterfall!” I swam trying to pull myself out of the currents but even if I did, there was nowhere to climb up. A discarded tree branch floated through the river and knocked me back further. “This trip has been almost as worthwhile as waiting in the queue for the Celadon Game Corner.” I said, not sure why those would be my last words, and then, a glorious sight. Something lifted me out, some sort of blue snake, leaping upwards to avoid the current, it was a legendary Dratini, a very rare Pokémon indeed, it leaped up forcing me off and landing hard on the ground. “Tini!” it said before diving in and disappearing. I stood in awe for a moment before even thinking of attempting to capture or record it, but it looked like it enjoyed its freedom. “Thank you!” I shouted. Looking ahead, I realised that I had just received a short cut, the elusive hut was in my sight, but I had still not caught any Pokémon. Mom and dad paid a lot for this trip, I had to bring back something to show for it. The hut might have some good stuff but my folks wanted me to catch a Pokémon here. Creeping around this time, I noticed another trainer. A young girl, about fourteen or fifteen I’d think, with shoulder length dark cherry hair at the sides and a dark violet beret on top matching the colour of the gloves, boots and dress she wore. She was wondering around, she looked lost, so I decided to check it out. But as I stepped out of the bushes, a Safari Ball hit me right in the face. “Ow!” I screamed. Looking up, I’d scared the girl and she was running away. “Wait!” I shouted stepping out, I heard a sound behind me. “Exeggcute!” “Exeggcute, the Egg Pokémon. This Pokémon often travels in swarms, when facing one, you are likely to be surrounded by many others.” One of the stranger Pokémon I'd known of, I couldn’t hide from it, and it wasn’t as fierce as that Nidorino, I threw some bait and watched. It took the offering and ate, It felt bad to disturb them now but I really wanted this Pokémon. After throwing a rock at them, it looked up at me, the eggs were hopping mad, I felt a blast knock me back, it was trying to knock me out with a barrage of projectiles. Quickly throwing the ball before it did any more harm, it contacted and the Exeggcute disappeared inside it. The ball fell to the ground shaking violently every second. Then it stopped and the light went green, a moment of ecstasy filled me as I picked up the ball. “Yes! I caught an Exeggcute!” I thought, “But you need a name too.” “Exeggcute evolves into Exeggutor, the Coconut Pokémon using a Grass Stone.” “So you’re a Grass/ Psychic... and basically a group of eggs until you evolve. I’ll call you Scramble.” Now I had a Grass and a Water-type. “Rock and Ground Pokémon had better watch out for me.” Looking at the clock, I realised how much time I’d wasted, the visit to the Safari Zone was timed. I threw myself into the river and swam to the other side and burst into the hut. “Man o’ man, you really wanted these. Congratulations for reaching the secret hut.” The man gave me a bag of Pokémon goods, potions, curative items and some TMs, the computer programs that I could teach Pokémon attacks with. “Those are special TMs straight from Silph Co, they made these until the Rockets took possession of the company.” “Rockets?” I asked, not sure who they were. “Don’t you know about Team Rocket? They’re Pokémon thieves who use their Pokémon for evil. Stay clear of them.” “Thanks sir.” I said stepping out. I suddenly heard a: “Bing Bong, would Trainer Tetsubo, make your way to the exit. The Safari Game is over.” Oh well, at least I got a new Pokémon, it would have been nice to catch more, there were Pokémon here that weren’t available anywhere else, so I guess if I wanted some of those, I’d have to come back later. “Did you get a good haul?” asked a man politely. “Sort of, thanks.” Leaving the office and leaving the Pokémon zoo area. I walked down to the beach where a couple of ferries were. The area around Fuchsia had some tough Pokémon and I’d read up that there were lower level Pokémon around the Pallet Town area, perfect for beginner trainers. “I’d better check the prices and locations.” I said to no one in particular. Running down the beach, I was stopped by a fisherman in thick clothing and a hat hiding his hair. “Hey you, are you a trainer?” “Yeah.” “Would you like a Pokémon Battle?” “Sure.” I said, eager to try out my new Pokémon. He released a Magikarp, I tried out my Exeggcute, Scramble. “Cute...” They sunk down a little, tired from our encounter, this could cost me... “Magikarp, the Fish Pokémon. This Pokémon is weaker than its ancestors that roamed the Earth many years ago.” I knew the Magikarp’s secret, that it would someday evolve into the powerful Gyarados if the trainer gave it enough care and experience, but this one seemed very weak and slow. “Magikarp! Tackle!” It feebly bounced towards my Exeggcute giving me plenty of time to think. “Scramble! Use Reflect!” “Exegg... Cute!” A golden wall appeared deflecting Magikarp and upgrading my Exeggcute’s defense. “Now Barrage!” Scramble took a look at me, probably deciding if I was a good trainer or not. Then it turned back and shot of lot of projectiles blasting the Magikarp. “D’ohhh... You won’t beat my next Pokémon.” the fisherman said recalling Magikarp. “Goldeen! Go!” The Goldeen bounced on the floor, a distinct advantage in my court. “Goldeen, the Goldfish Pokémon. Also known as the Water Queen, their tail fin flutters like an elegant dress.” “Scramble! Hypnosis!” I shouted. “Goldeen! Peck!” “GoldeenGoldeenGoldeenGoldeen!” Splashing up, and diving towards my Exeggcute, I was in dismay, one of the Grass-type Pokémon’s weaknesses was Flying, how a Water-type could learn it boggled my mind, but the horn was having the same effect as a beak, and hit my Exeggcute hard. “Scramble!” “Ex... Egg... Cute...” Trying to pick themselves up, they couldn’t and collapsed. “Take a rest.” I had allowed my confidence to get the better of me again and forgot about that ability of the Goldeen and Seaking. There were an awful lot of different attacks that Pokémon could learn, and some moves could only be learned through the trainers owning the information to do so. I couldn’t go through another loss, how would my Pokémon grow if they didn’t win? “Twinkill! You’re on!” “Star!” My Staryu appeared and stared at the opponent, I knew then that I would be able to rely on this Pokémon, Twinkill trusted me now. Water versus Water, it all depended on skill now. “Goldeen! Supersonic!” “Twinkill! Leap up and Tackle!” My Staryu jumped up just in time. “Goldeen! Horn Attack!” “Harden!” The shield appeared in time and helped Twinkill against the sharp horns. “Now... Water Gun followed by Tackle!” It played along perfectly, squirting a blast of water to stun Goldeen, the tackle finished it off and sent Goldeen into the water, “Goldeeeeeennn!” She floated to the surface upside down, defeated. “Our first win!” I shouted, then calmed down, the fisherman probably wasn’t feeling too good. “Good match son, I’ll have to train harder. Thanks.” he said walking away. I approached the boats, one was going to Cinnabar Island and the other to Pallet Town, that area was great for beginner trainers, I was about to board when I remembered my Exeggcute, what if there were delays? Scramble would be hurting all the way, I decided to risk a return to the Centre. It took ten minutes to refresh both my Pokémon. “Thank you Nurse Joy.” I said before running for the beach, and running into a Pokémon which growled at me. A Venonat: “Venonat, the Insect Pokémon. Using its radar eyes, this Pokémon can see much further away than some telescopes, it is instinctively attracted to light.” “I could use another Pokémon...“ I didn’t want to risk Scramble, in case this one had learnt Leech Life, it was pretty effective against Grass-types. “Twinkill! Once again! Quickly let’s use a Water Gun.” It fired and hit the Venonat hard. “Pokéball! Go!” It hit the Venonat and stopped, no effort used to try and escape. My Staryu’s Water Gun was already quite powerful, but not powerful enough to beat Bryan’s Growlithe, how could his Fire-type be so resistant against Water? Oh well, I had another Pokémon, and now would be the time to nickname it. “I’ll quickly check the Pokédex.” “Venonat evolves into Venomoth, the Poisonmoth Pokémon at around Level 31.” “And Venomoths are known for the immense amount of poison and dust on their wings, I’ll call you Dusty.” It would grow on it and maybe lead opponents into underestimating it, I would train this Bug/ Poison Pokémon well. I dashed for the beach and saw the boat had already left, the Cinnabar one was gone too, not that I was experienced enough to take on the trainers there. A little disappointed, I sat down, ferries didn’t come to this part of Fuchsia too often, but maybe, with a little cooperation, I could get across.
