Chapter 10: The Cerulean Sisters (Part B) by Michael Keens/ Exodus That evening, the theatre was full, we had sent Chad out to advertise, so everyone in the city would definitely know the new play was on. We were all a little nervous, especially me and Emily, we had only been roped into playing the lead characters, those sisters were quite persuasive when they wanted to be. I thought about things, “Oh god.” I put in a kissing scene, and there was no time to alter the script at this stage, our relationship was awkward enough. I hadn’t heard any complaints though, perhaps Emily would understand it was only for the effect of the play. It felt short staffed with that Mandy guy playing the part of the Mermaid Prince and us as the lead characters, but that was all that was needed apart from the Pokémon which we had plenty of. I was sure the Cerulean Sisters would hire more actors after we left. It was one minute until curtain time, we were both nervous. “You okay Emily?” “Yeah, sure, its time to put my loudmouth to good use.” I was about to comfort her and tell her otherwise, but this was a thing that Emily had no problem accepting, she was loud and open. “Emily, the kiss... I wouldn’t have put it in if I knew we had to do it, but Daisy really liked the idea.” “Well she is probably going to play the mermaid girl after we leave, and she gets the final say in all actors that work here... Go figure.” “But still... Are you okay with it?...” “Tetsubo, I know our feelings are all over the place, let’s just play our roles and remember a few things, you are the handsome prince and I am the beautiful mermaid and we are both in love, just remember that and nothing will come out of us kissing for the play.” “Okay...” The curtain rose. “Catch you soon.” Wearing a small air device on her mouth, she dived straight into the large tank and swam around with the Water Pokémon while Daisy recited the narrative speech. “In the oceans lived a beautiful mermaid, she liked nothing more than to swim with all the lovely Water Pokémon.” Emily was quite good at the underwater acrobatics, and there were a lot of Water Pokémon following behind her, well, this used to be a Gym that specialised in Water-type Pokémon. Twinkill was doing a good job swimming alongside a well trained Starmie, there was a good five minutes of swimming and I didn’t know how Emily could pull it all off. Finally my scene came, it was an easier one, all I had to do was sit in my prince outfit and look unhappy. “And on the land was a kind hearted handsome prince who lived with a lot of Normal Pokémon.” Around me were Lucky, Chewtoy and Whirlwind among a couple of others. “In this area, Water and Normal Pokémon were known to dislike each other, and were always fighting each other for no real reason.” It was the Pokémon’s turn to act now, on the small foam island, they put on a good show, using their special attacks to look good, but not hurt the other Pokémon. “This made things hard for the prince and the mermaid who were deeply in love.” This was my moment to shine, on the island, I equipped myself with an air mask, took Emily’s hand and swam alongside her, she guided me all the way. It was easy to give off a look of total awe and love towards her for the audience, because I actually felt that way. Emily finished up and brought me back above water, she was playing the part great, I really felt the love she was giving off as this character. The lights went out for a moment as further events conspired. “But the Water and Normal Pokémon discovered this and pulled the two away from each other believing such a thing could not be.” The next scene comprised of the Pokémon pulling us away from each other, and we had to look as devastated as we could, I really got a feel for this because Emily was a close friend and the thought of us being separated helped me act this one out. “But the two still saw each other in secret, not wanting to let these differences break apart their love.” Here was the big scene, first we do all the ‘I missed you, I never want to be apart from you again’ stuff, and then the plans for the meeting to run away together and then... the kiss. It was time. Walking out onto the stage, Emily was there, in that beautiful outfit and a believable tail costume, her hair was no longer covered by her hairband and flowed freely. She was already in character. “You made it.” “It was hard trying to sneak away, my Pokémon have alerted the Prince of Mermaids, they want me to marry him.” “You can’t...” “I know, but what am I to do?” “Run away with me. We’ll find a new home, and Pokémon that respect our choice to be together...” “Leave everything behind... But for you, of course.” “Meet me here tonight and we’ll leave this place. Promise?” “I promise...” “Let us seal it with a kiss...” “Here we go.” I thought, “Let’s make this convincing and remember it won’t change my relationship with Emily.” It didn’t happen, an explosion ruined the moment completely, and it would change the play totally. “To protect the world from devastation!” “To unite all peoples within our nation!” “To denounce the evils of truth and love!” “To extend our reach to the stars above!” “Jessie!” “James!” “Team Rocket blast off at the speed of light!” “Surrender now or prepare to fight!” “Meowth! That’s right!” “Hey its the villains from the first play!” someone shouted, the audience cheered surprisingly, the klutz Rockets were surprised and bowed to the ‘fans’. “We’re stars!” said James happily. “I guess we made quite an impact the last time we were here.” commented Jessie. “The only impact you two clowns made was with the roof!” shouted Meowth, before getting hit on the head with Jessie’s plastic fan. “I’ve had just about enough of your negativity.” shouted Jessie. “We’re going to succeed this time cos we got new Pokémon since the last time we were here.” added James. “There’s the turquoise twerp.” said Jessie noticing me. “We’ll get him for making a mockery of the Rockets!” added James. “You two make a mockery of the Rockets as it is!” laughed Meowth, before Jessie hit him again. “Jessie, what Pokémon shall we use first to steal the ones here?” “Your Weezing is useless in water, use your Victreebel instead and send Weezing to get those Normal Pokémon!” With that they threw the Pokéballs down. “Its up to us to save the show, you any good at improvising?” I asked Emily. “Of course, I do it every day with the enemies you’ve made.” This wasn’t meant as an insult, Daisy was also ready to improvise, apparently she had dealt with this before. “But then, pirates attacked the area of peace wanting to capture the Pokémon.” Time to act: “Oh no! Its those vicious pirates!” “I’ll handle this, Seadra! Ice Beam!” said Mandy, but the Rockets decided it would be the first to go. “Its that skunk magician from Indigo!” ”We’ll teach him to insult us!” “Seadra! No!” Seadra was caught in the first net and hoisted up, more nets were being prepared, I had to do something, but keep the storyline intact. The Water Pokémon were down below with Emily, holding their own, freezing Victreebel and head butting Arbok. Up above, Lucky ‘Egg Bombed’ Weezing, but it was far from finished. “Whirlwind! Wing Attack that rope and help Seadra.” “Pidgeooootooo!” It did the job and Mandy’s Seadra went to help the other Water Pokémon. Lickitung jumped down, its weight shaking the island, there was enough time to record this rare Pokémon without the audience noticing it was for personal gain. “Lickitung, the Licking Pokémon. The tongue in this Pokémon’s mouth can extend to twice its body length, when it licks, it is known to cause paralysis.” “Poison, Poison, Normal and Grass/ Poison." I thought, counting the Rocket's Pokémon. I had an idea. "So you're a Normal-type eh?..." I said to the Lickitung, "You’re working for the pirates, you’re the one who started the feud in the first place. It makes perfect sense, start a feud then bring your pirate friends to capture all the Pokémon!” Lickitung looked confused and worried. “Let’s defeat these creeps!” screamed Emily. The Normal Pokémon charged forward but Chewtoy wasn’t interested, it had a lot of loyalty towards Chad and he was nowhere to be seen. “Weeeezzz!” The Normals were blinded by the smoke and Lickitung slapped them with its tongue, paralysing some, it saw Chewtoy just standing there and body slammed it, this was the biggest mistake it could make as Chewtoy slammed its teeth on its tongue. “Ouch.” I thought. “TUUUNNNNGGG!” it screamed leaping up. I couldn’t resist saying “What’s the matter, Rat got your tongue?” It felt right, and I got a small applause for that one. Weezing quickly helped and barged Chewtoy, it was fierce but Chad was what made him great, he might not know much about weaknesses but he knew how to train that Raticate. “CHEWTOY! QUICK ATTACK!” Chad had made it to the sidelines dressed as a royal figure, someone from the prince’s side of the family. “CHAD THE CHOSEN IS HERE!” The audience laughed and Chad was upset. “I knew he shouldn’t have gone out there, that's why he didn’t make the final cut.” commented Lily. “Chad, lay off that Chad the Chosen thing and use your Raticate to help us.” I shouted. Lickitung struck back, angry and upset, and Chewtoy was paralysed also, and Lickitung wasn’t going to leave it at that. We couldn’t win like this, we needed... to work together, that would change the play to a happier ending but as long as it got that far... Emily whistled and the Water Pokémon knew to rise to the top. “We have to work together!” The Water Pokémon screamed out and Horsea, Starmie, Twinkill, Seaking, Goldeen, Seadra and some others blasted the Weezing down, then used Ice attacks on Lickitung. “Ch’aaaarrr!” “Viiiiiii!” The submerged Pokémon jumped out to join their comrades. “Horsea, use Water Gun on the Normal Pokémon to help get whatever paralysed them off.” “Horsseeaa!” The smoke cleared and the Rocket’s Pokémon were battered, then they saw the competition, about 20 or so Normal and Water Pokémon ready to fight. “Ch’arrr!” “Weeez!” “Tungtungtungtung!” “Viiii!” They leaped into the basket of the balloon. “Cowards!” shouted Jessie. “I think they’ve got a valid reason to be scared!” screamed James. “We’ll be even more scared if we don’t swipe some Pokémon for the Boss!” shouted Meowth. “I thought this new twerp would be easier to steal from, but he’s just as smart and powerful as our favourite twerp!” said Jessie. “Let’s go try and swipe that Pikachu instead, at least we're used to getting beaten by him!” added James. Their conversation was interrupted by myself. “Altogether, projectile attacks!” Water Guns and Hyper Beams all went off at once, blasting the Rocket’s balloon, and them, out the roof. “Team Rocket’s blasting off again!...” The crowd cheered, now we just had to wrap it up. “So it was that Lickitung that got you different types fighting in the first place, you just proved that Normal and Water Pokémon can get along and live together, so please let me stay with this beautiful mermaid... I really do love her...” The Pokémon gave a nod of acceptance. I ran to Emily and gave her a good long hug, so as to make the ending dramatic. “Why does he get the girl?” asked Chad. “Why not me?” added Mandy. “Cos you got a girl’s name.” Mandy shot a glare at Chad. “Well you did it, you did some really good editing and this play was a success.” said Emily, out of character, quietly, “But you’re not getting off the hook, the prince and the mermaid must show to the audience that they’re in love.” Before I could say anything, Emily pressed her lips against mine, I was surprised, but I went with the role and enjoyed it, I wondered why Emily chose to do this, it wasn’t really necessary now, maybe there was hope for us yet... “The End.” The Goldeen from earlier leaped into the air, spun around three times and landed nicely in the water. The audience cheered and screamed, the lights came back on and we gave a bow, we had proved ourselves to be quite good actors. Later, the sisters saw us off. “We can’t thank you enough, now our theatre will continue to be a success, after we hire some new actors to replace you.” said Lily. “Here’s a reward as promised, you deserve so much more though.” I was about to explain to Daisy how I didn’t want a badge, but instead I got a peck on the cheek from each of the sisters and the map I requested with a list and locations of the new Gyms. “Oh, thank you.” “If you ever want to visit, just drop by, we’ll give you a discount.” “Good luck on your journey.” “You’re guys are totally cool!” Saying our goodbyes, me and my travelling companions left Cerulean to continue our journey. “Emily, why the kiss? The whole story was changed and it wasn’t necessary.” “I was improvising, just like you asked.” “Yeah but-” “How dare they laugh at CHAD THE CHOSEN! I’m a great actor!” Chad interrupted. “Next time, maybe you should play someone else, someone that’s... nothing like you.” “What do you mean?! CHAD THE CHOSEN makes a great character no matter what the role!” “Except for any role that requires a good actor.” “Why you!” I had pushed him too far and me and Emily ran off ahead while an annoyed Chad chased us. I still had 7 Gyms to go, but today, I had just proved I had other talents apart from Pokémon Training. It might actually help us in the future...
