Chapter 13: Return of the Mysterious Pokémon (Part A) by Michael Keens/
Exodus

After adding Inferno, the red-hot Charmander to the team, we trekked up Route
25 on our way to Vermilion City.
It had taken a couple of days, but we were slowly nearing Vermilion City, where
I would battle for my second badge.
We rested near the pretty wooden fences, and took some time to teach our
Pokémon some new moves.
“Mankey!”
Chad had some reinforced padding on his hands, and was letting Ragecage
practice away.
I took the time to attempt to train Psychot.
“Abra.”
“Bulbasaur!”
“Solar, use Tackle.” ordered Emily lightly.
“Psychot, we’re here in training, we can stop any time, now try a Confusion
attack.” I said gently, trying to encourage Psychot to fight.
“Abrraaa...”
At least he was trying.
“Solar, wait a moment, that Abra is slower than you, let it make the first
move.”
“Abrraaa... Abrraaa... Abra...”
“He’s still not ready. Let’s call it quits, Em’.”
“He’ll come through for you when the time is right.”
“When we get to Vermilion, I’m going to drop off Whirlwind, he’s pretty strong
and my other Pokémon need some more training time.”
“Come on! Thrash me!”
“Key...”
“I won’t shout at you, Thrash me.”
“Key...”
“Chad, Ragecage isn’t going to use an attack that uses its anger to
continuously punch the opponent until they fall, on its beloved trainer. Some
attacks will just have to be learnt in battles.” I advised.
“Okay... I guess we should get a move on, I’ve gotta get another badge.”
“How many do you have anyway?”
“Three.”
“Three?! I’ve only got one and that was when you had no idea about types?!”
“I guess I got lucky, my Fighting and Grass-type Pokémon really pulled through,
but I guess type differences had a lot to do with it.”
“And Emily, how many have you got?”
“Don’t worry, I’ve only got a Boulder Badge, I guess we’ll be travelling to
the same Gyms together.”
“I’d like that.” I replied, it was nice to know she would be with me all the
way.

A huge boot crushed a small patch of grass, it belonged to a rather chubby
hiker, he wore a hard hat and had dark spiky hair and beard.
“I challenge any one of you to a Pokémon Battle.”
Emily jumped in first, “Me, you can battle me. Three-on-three.”
Hiker’s were generally known to use Fighting and Rock-type Pokémon, Emily had
two Pokémon with an advantage.

“I choose you Geodude!”
“Geodude!”
“No where as good as my Geodude.” Chad commented.
“Then I’m going with Clefairy.”
“Clefairy?!” I stuttered.
“Clefairy.” cheered the Pokémon.
“Emily, that Clefairy didn’t fight last time and you haven’t trained it since.”
I advised.
“I’m sure Clefairy will come through for me. Clefairy, use your Metronome.”
“Clef?”
“Oh no...” groaned Emily.
“Tackle!”
“Cle-fairy!”
It was down on the first hit, it just wasn’t experienced enough, still it
should at least know Growl, Pound and Sing.
“I’m going to need some type advantage now. I choose Blossom!”
“Oddddish!”
“Blossom, Absorb its strength!”
“Odddish!”
The green light burst out, leaving Geodude very weak.
“Finish it with Sleep Powder.”
“Geo... Dude...”
“See how weak it is?” said Chad.
“Um, Chad, Rock and Ground-types are weak against Grass attacks, you should
know that.”
“Oh yeah, I forgot.”
“Onix, Go!”
“NIIIIXXX!”
“Oddish...”

“Onix, the Rock Snake Pokémon. Its large body grows to an average of 26 feet
long, it is an excellent burrower and can travel at 50 miles per hour,
underground.”

“Don’t back down, give your Petal Dance a try.”
It was the first time for Emily’s Oddish, spinning itself around, gathering
speed along with leaves, it shot itself forward and the Onix was down.
Surprised at the result, Emily’s Oddish jumped up in joy, it handled that
attack quite well.
Then it slumped over, its eyes turned into spirals, and the confusion took
effect.
“I’d better recall you, good job Blossom.”
“I choose Machop!”
“Ma-chop!”
“Then, I’ll choose Solar!”
“Bulbasaur!”
“Machop, use your Karate Chop!”
“A Fighting Pokémon... Perhaps we should try out our new Toxic attack.”
“Saur!”
It spat out a lot of purple gunk, the Machop looked poorly but ready to go on.
“Machop, use a Leer attack!”
“Saur!” shouted Solar scared.
“Don’t be scared, Tackle it!”
The Machop fell back, but picked itself up.
“Mega Punch now!” shouted the hiker.
Solar was hit, Emily was unsure about about which Pokémon could be taught which
attacks, like a great deal of trainers, there would be more surprises like that
in the future.
Solar looked poorly.
“Solar, use Razor Leaf!”
“Karate Chop and Mega Punch!”
The Machop punched through all the leaves, then burst out the cloud of green
and smacked Solar hard, he bounced back and landed awkwardly.
“Machop finish it.”
“Solar, Return.”
“Saur!” he retorted.
“You don’t want to?”
“Saur...” it nodded.
“Solar, you should return!”
“Saur!” it shouted.
“Machop, finish the overconfident little scamp with another Mega Punch.”
Machop approached Solar, who simply waited.
Now I realised what he was up to.
Machop drew its fist back, then collapsed.

“Toxic, I remember its effects now, its an ongoing Poison attack with increases
strength over time, it finally struck it down. Good thinking Solar, we won!”
cheered Emily.
“Agh! Damn. Good match.” said the hiker, walking away sad.

We continued our walk, it was getting dark already, and we’d need a place to
sleep, it was getting really cold so it wouldn’t be a good idea to camp, but
who would put us up for the night?
For a moment, I thought I saw a flicker of light, there it was again.
I veered to the right and the others followed me, the light source was from a
large lamp spinning around, a lighthouse at the end of a high cliff.
This place was as good as any to stay, provided the owner let us.

Upon reaching it, it was bigger than it had looked, the huge door with Pokémon
tiles was twice our size.
I banged on it, so as to be loud enough, but not rude.
“Hello? Is anyone there? We were wondering if you could put us up for the
night.”
“Oh hello." said a polite voice coming out the intercom, "I may be able to help
you if you can help me.”
“Sure, whatever you want.”
“Are you shocked easily?”
“I don’t think so.”
“Then come on in...”
It took a few moments for the door to open, we stepped in and wandered through
the huge gothic halls.
The walls were covered completely in Pokémon tiles, some illustrating really
rare Pokémon.
There were a few tables with a videophone and other devices.
The door at the top of the carpeted stairs was a safe bet to look for the
owner.

Opening the door, it couldn’t be helped, we screamed at the sight of it:
“What is it?!”
“A Pokémon?”
“I’ll check...”

“No available data.”

It was a mess, parts looked human, and others like Pokémon.
“I’ll capture it then.”
Throwing the Pokéball quickly, I soon wished I hadn’t, the man told me about
something that would shock me, I could only watch now.
The ball hit, the creature turned to red in some areas, went distorted in
others, the force pulled away and the Pokéball shattered.
We shielded our eyes.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t realise, guy, whoever you are, what is this thing?!”
“Its me.” said the same posh voice.
“Uh, what are you exactly?” asked Emily.
“I’m human of course!”
“Uh, the last time I checked, humans were much prettier.” said Chad
sarcastically.
“No, no, no, I goofed up, my D.N.A’s mixed with a Kabuto!”
“How the heck do you accidentally mix your D.N.A with a Pokémon?!” asked Chad
annoyed, but he had a point.
“I don’t remember. My mind’s acting a bit like Kabuto apparently did, I have a
strange urge to drink someone’s body fluid...”
“Dear god!” screamed Emily.
“See my problem, do me a favour, while I get in the capsule, go to the computer
and run the Cell Separation System.”
“Sure, anything to get rid of that ugly face.” I replied.
“Hey!... I guess you have a point.”
The creature walked/ crawled into the capsule, restoring him would be just as
satisfactory for us as it would him, we wouldn’t have to look at that twisted
face again.
The machines hummed and a man in a posh crimson shirt and trousers with curly
green hair stepped out.
“Oh, thank you so much, I don’t know what I would have done otherwise.
Everyone else saw me and ran away before I could explain.”
“O-kay...”
“My name is Bill, I’m a Pokémon researcher.”
“I’m Tetsubo.”
“Chad.”
“Emily, I’ve read one of your articles... You’re very good.” she commented.
“Why thank you my lady.” replied Bill.
“So what does this guy do when he’s not mixing up his D.N.A with an extinct
Pokémon?” asked Chad rudely.
“I told you already, that was an accident, I was trying to revive a fossil, and
part of my D.N.A needed to be used to prove one of my theories.”
“If you say so.”
“Um, I’ve got a fossil, want to take a look at it?”
“Sure, Emily.”
It took a few minutes of ‘Hmm’s and ‘Ahh’s before Bill spoke up again.
“Well, its definitely an Omanyte fossil, and its been well preserved, but I’m
not the guy to revive it. You saw what happened, I’d rather not try it
again.”
“Oh...”
“Don’t lose hope, on Cinnabar Island, I have a colleague who specialises in
this subject, perhaps he’ll help, just tell him I sent you.”
“Okay then Bill.”
“You wanted to stay here the night? I don’t mind, now how about we all have
some late night dinner. How does Tofu sound?”
“Tofu?...”
I wasn’t particularly thrilled at the idea.
“Well my cook’s on his annual vacation, but we could always order pizza, on
me...”

Later on, while finishing dinner, we listened to some of Bill’s theories.
“So Tetsubo, you aim to record all the Pokémon on the Pokédex? Do you know how
many there are?”
“Yeah, 150, maybe 151.”
“Wrong.”
“Say what?”
“You were a student at Pokémon Tech, were you not? They are very good but they
don’t know everything about Pokémon, nor do the ones who built the Pokédex.”
“Oh...”
I was a little surprised, I had always thought the college had taught me
everything I needed to know, but I had already learnt this was not the case.
“There are many more Pokémon that have not been recorded.”
“How many more?”
“I don’t know, hundreds, maybe thousands, maybe more than we could ever
imagine.”
“Oh...”
The thought of it was mind boggling.
“Have you seen one of these new Pokémon?”
“Almost. For many years I have been communicating with a very mysterious
Pokémon, I almost reached out to it, but it ran away the last time. I have
been in wait for a whole year, and finally it told me... ‘I will return to you’.”
“Cool, when will it come back?” asked Emily.
“According to my calculations, tonight.”
“That means...” I started.
“We’ll be able to see it too...” finished Emily in awe.

Outside, unknown to me, were three familiar figures.
“Did ya hear dat, y’all? A mysterious Pokémon...”
“And it’ll be super rare.”
“And big, those klutzes, Jessie and James, mentioned a huge Pokémon in this
area, and guess how that handled it, they shot at it with bazookas!”
“So what’s your strategy?”
“We’ll bring in the bigger guns...”
