Chapter 14: Lost and Found (Part B) by Michael Keens/ Exodus We soon arrived back at the Day Care Centre. “You got them, you got them back.” said the Caretaker. “Uh, we only got one Pokémon back, that's what you sent us for, you said you lost someone’s Pokémon, and here it is.” I explained, hoping he had just said the wrong thing. “No! Two Pokémon were stolen! Where is the other one?!” “There was only this one!” “Please, you have to find the other one!” “You could have been a little more specific!” “Those kids were smarter than they looked, they made out that they were stupid enough only to steal a Magikarp.” commented Chad. “I’ll get them, they’re gonna regret this!” I shouted storming off... Later, I ran back to the area we were just in. The others were far away and so might be the Junior Rockets if I didn’t hurry up. I saw them calmly sitting on a park bench, without the uniforms on though. “Where is it?!” “Where is what?” asked Larry. “The other Pokémon! You must think I’m really dumb!” “Well yeah, cos we don’t have another Pokémon.” argued Lorraine. “You’ll tell me where it is or I’ll report you to the police!” “Don’t you listen? We don’t have it! Grrrr, maybe our Pokémon will get you to wise up!...” Within a couple of minutes, the Goldeen, Sandshrew, Spearow and Jigglypuff lay on the floor. “Something tells me you haven’t healed them up since last time.” I said sarcastically. Chad and Emily were in sight now. “Tetsubo, did you get it back?” asked Emily. “No, they say they don’t have it.” “Naughty little kids don’t get presents...” taunted Emily. “We’re not that young to believe stuff like that!” screamed Lorraine. “We only stole that Magikarp! It was the Screwloose Brothers that stole the other- Oops...” said Larry. “I take back all good comments about these two, they really were stupid enough only to steal a Magikarp.” said Chad. “Talk, who are the Screwloose Brothers?” I demanded. “We’ll never tell!” “ANSWER US!” shouted Chad, then he looked guilty as everyone in the park looked at us. “Kids need a bit of discipline, especially Rocket kids.” added Chad. The two looked genuinely, a little frightened. “They’re another organisation in Team Rocket.” “And where are they?” “We don’t know!” “ANSWER-” “It’s true, we really don’t know.” “They’re telling the truth.” I said, “If you’ve got any sense, you’ll run away right now.” I told them darkly, they dashed off immediately. “And quit the Rockets, its no place for children!...” We trudged all the way back to the Day Care Centre, if mobile transporters existed, it would have been the time to invest in a couple. “Well?...” asked the Caretaker eagerly. “They didn’t have it, someone else took it.” “Oh yes, that figures, the first Pokémon went missing, and while I looked for that, those kids sneaked in.” I grew a little annoyed. “Then why didn’t you tell us that?! The other culprits must be long gone!” “I’m sorry! I didn’t think! I’ll just have to tell that girl the truth... I promise to look out for the Pokémon and tighten security a lot more from now on!” “There’s nothing that can be done, unless we ever do find the Screwloose Brothers...” I said in a tough tone. “Thank you anyway, at least I can give back one of the little girl’s Pokémon... Please rest, you’ve done enough.” I couldn’t be angry anymore, but still, I thought about how I would feel if I lost one of my Pokémon. “So what do you do exactly when you’re not losing Pokémon?” asked Chad blatantly. “Oh, this place is like a health spa, the Pokémon can relax, learn attacks and be given healthy food with lots of nutrients, its been proven that some Pokémon can grow a lot if they stay in places like this.” “Learn attacks...” I pondered. “Perhaps we should leave some Pokémon here.” said Emily. She dropped a Pokéball, and Clefairy came out. “Clefairy.” ”Caretaker. This Clefairy refuses to use any attacks... Could you see what's wrong?” “Of course. Clefairy, could you Sing for me?” “Clef?” “Well, Pound that practice dummy there.” “Clef?” “Doubleslap it?” “Clef?” “Just as I thought, see how small it is? Its still young, too young to be battling. It won’t learn any attacks for some time.” “It won’t? But I’m training for the Pokémon League.” “There’s nothing that can be done, that Clefairy is simply too young for battling.” “Thank you Caretaker, at least I understand our problem.” said Emily recalling it. “Caretaker, we’ve got to be going now, but I’d like to leave a Pokémon here.” I said. “Huh?” asked Emily and Chad in unison. “Don’t worry, I’m sure the Caretaker has learned his lesson, I trust him to tighten security from now on.” “But which Pokémon are you leaving?” “My Abra. I’m sure Psychot wants to fight for me, it just needs to learn some attacks. This place will do it some good.” “Okay then Mr Tetsubo, I’ll take extra special care of this one.” “I’ve got a credit card so-” “No, no, no, you helped me out today, I’ll help this one for free.” “Okay, thanks.” “But only for a little while, mind you!” “That’s okay, once we get our badges in Vermilion, we’ve got to come back through here anyway to get to the next town. I’ll be back soon. But if you lose it, I will have you shut down for insubordination!” I released my Abra from its ball. “Psychot, I’d like you to stay here for a couple of days, learn some new attacks maybe?” “Abraaa...” “Don’t worry, I’ll be back soon, I promise, this is for the best, then when we meet again, you’ll be more powerful, and we can fight side by side.” “Abra.” “Thanks for understanding.” With that we departed, sure to return to the Day Care Centre shortly. “So, you’re gonna trust that old duff with your Pokémon. Big mistake I think.” commented Chad. “That’s where we’re different, I trust him to learn his lesson. If we ever run into those brothers, I won’t leave without finding that Pokémon and returning it to the girl.” “You don’t know where either one of them are!” “Yeah, well, I’ll find out.” “You take on too much for own good Tetsubo...” commented Emily. “What’s wrong with that?” “Oh, nothing.” We were getting closer to Vermilion City, it had been some time since leaving Cerulean. It was reaching evening time and we were in no mood to get involved in another battle so we went the hard way avoiding the grasslands and keeping to the path. It had been a long day and we didn’t even succeed totally in our task. “How about we crash here and finish our walk to Vermilion tomorrow?” I asked the group. “I can’t. I want to test out my new Spearow.” said Chad excitedly. “Well, go then, but don’t stray too far.” Chad eagerly ran away, his boots clumping down the thick grass. “He’s not so hard to get on with now.” I commented. “Yup, he’s changed, but its because of you, I think you have a good influence on others.” said Emily. “I do?” “Of course you do, it would be a waste if you just went straight to the Pokémon League without any friends, you made the right choice.” She climbed into her sleeping bag and lay down. “Emily, back in Cerulean, why did you kiss me?...” I was answered by a light snore, I had to straighten things out in my mind, what did Emily really want out from me?... Meanwhile Chad found some kids to battle. “Hey you two, let’s have a Pokémon Battle!” The youth yawned, “But its nearly past my bedtime...” “What, you scared? What about you girl?” “Okay, but we’ll fight together, you use two Pokémon, we’ll use one each.” “You’re on!” “I choose Pidgey!” said the girl. “And I’ll use BOULDER!” “Pidgey! Use Wing Attack!” “BOULDER... Um, USE DEFENSE CURL!” Boulder covered itself with its large fists and stood against the attack. “NOW, MEGA PUNCH!” The Pidgey flew backwards but regained balance. “Fly up high!” “BOULDER, ROCK THROW!” He picked up a rock and flung it upwards, but it was too high to be hit. “Now, Fly down and attack it!” Boulder fell backwards but picked itself up. “COME ON, ROCK THROW AGAIN!” “Time for my secret move, Sky Attack!” Boulder flung another rock while the Pidgey glowed, the flames around it cushioned the blow. “Again! Again! ONE HIT FROM THAT ROCK AND FLYING-TYPES WILL BE CRUSHED!” “Second phase of Sky Attack, now!” Pidgey changed into a phoenix-like shape and blasted through Boulder, who while falling, threw the rock and caught the Pidgey off guard. Both were down. “Nice, but you’ll still have to beat my guy.” “Come on then, Spearow!” “Spearow? I’ll show you who the better Spearow is, GO!” shouted Chad. Both appeared but Chad’s went straight for him and pecked his head constantly. “Ow! Come on Spearow, ow, look over there, its another Spearow, ow, ow, ow! Show how much better you are!” The Spearow snorted and jumped into battle, using Fury Attack. The boy’s Spearow fell back. “It won’t even listen to you, this’ll be easy. Spearow, use your Mirror Move!” It imitated the Fury Attack in the same way. This angered Chad’s Spearow who flew up, dived down, and pecked the Spearow on the way. “Leer attack!” “SPEAROW! LOOK AWAY FOR A WHILE!” Chad’s Spearow ignored him totally and charged for another attack, then stopped cold. “Drill Peck!” The Spearow spun itself around and hit Chad’s with the force of a small tunnel drill, it collapsed. Chad picked it up in concern, but it jumped up and pecked him repeatedly until he recalled it. “Looks like you lost, you really have to train that thing. I’d start by being nice to it.” advised the boy. “And what do you know about raising Spearows?” asked Chad angrily. “Uh, I OWN one?!” “Oh yeah.” “See ya, we gotta get some sleep.” said the girl, and the two went back to their home. After a quick training session with my Pokémon, I saw Chad return. “How’d you do?” “Terrible, my Spearow hates me.” “It’ll come through if you care for it.” “But I’m not that sort of trainer, I have to push my Pokémon a little to bring out the best in them. Maybe catching that Spearow was a bad idea.” I didn’t argue, each trainer had a unique method of training Pokémon, some ways were bad and all, but some were good in the long run. We were all tired from our journey, we’d done the best we could to help that female trainer and tomorrow, we’d be in Vermilion to prove I had learned something, and beat the Gym Leader there.
