Chapter 22: Unwanted Additions (Part A) by Michael Keens/ Exodus

After our victory in Lavender Town, Emily and I had been walking down Route 8
for a few days now, I had decided to take Twinkill, Scramble, Whirlwind,
Inferno, Shockwave and Spectre.
She had Lucky, Solar, Miles, Blossom, Poisoness and Graveyard.
We hadn’t run into anyone so far and had basically talked, walked, rested, ate
and trained the Pokémon by going against each other in friendly battles.
We ascended another hill and Saffron City was in our sights.
Just another day or so and we’d be fighting in another Gym Battle.

Thick forests were at the sides of this new path, quite thin and the width of
about four people.
I knew this because four kids were blocking the path by standing in a line.
“Hey, its a trainer.”
“Think he’s good enough?”
“We shall have to see.”
“Can I help you?” I asked politely.
“Yeah, our leader is a brilliant Pokémon Trainer looking for good trainers to
battle. Beat us four and we’ll let you battle with our leader.”
“Sorry guys, but if I do that, my Pokémon will get tired and I’ve made a lot of
enemies who could attack us at any moment.” I replied.
“What if I battle two of them?” asked Emily, “Then their leader can choose who
to battle.”
“I suppose so.” said the one on the left drawing a Pokéball, a cool male
trainer wearing red, “I’m up first!”
“Fine with me.” I replied throwing the ball.

“Slooooowwww!!!”
“Hau hau ha ha!”
His Slowpoke versus my Haunter.
“Slowpoke, use your Confusion attack!”
“Oh yeah, Slowpokes are Water and Psychic Dual-types. I’ve got this one in the
bag. Duck it Spectre and follow up with Night Shade!”
“Hau ha ha ha!” he laughed, flying below the Psychic attack and firing the
purple beam.
It was an easy victory.

The second opponent was a girl in a yellow school uniform.
“Come on ‘greenie’! I’ll take you on!”
“Whatever you say...” said Emily snatching a ball and throwing it.
“Jiggly!”
“Bulbasaur!”
“Jigglypuff! Use your Pound!”
“Tackle it Solar!”
There was a clash and the two bounced off each other.
“Its quite good.” said Emily in an almost satisfied tone.
“Not bad.” said the lass, “Jigglypuff! Double Edge!”
“Vine Whip!”
Solar’s two vines flew forward but the Jigglypuff jumped over it, rolled into a
ball and used the two vines as a bridge to roll down.
She reached the end and uncurled, looking into the Bulbasaur’s surprised face
before jumping forward and dealing damage to it and herself.
“Don’t let her use you Solar, Vine Whip!”
“She doesn’t learn does she, Double Edge again!”
“Jiggly!”
It bounced onto the vines again.
“Retract your vines, Solar!”
“Bulbasaur!”
The force flung the Jigglypuff into the air.
“Tackle it, Solar!”
He leaped up and rammed his side into Jigglypuff, bouncing her higher into the
air.
“Now we’ll destroy her with Vine Whip!”
Jigglypuff was too dizzy to use Solar’s attack against him this time, the vines
shoved her down to the ground.
“Jiggly...”
“Alright!”
Solar extended one vine to slap hands with Emily.

“My turn now.” said a female junior trainer wearing a turquoise dress.
“Meowth!”
“Buzzzzz!!!”
Her eyes widened, the Electabuzz was a shock for her and soon her Meowth.
“Meowth, Scratch attack!”
“I kinda feel guilty about this but, Thunderpunch!”
The cat fell to the floor and Shockwave turned to me, arms waving in the air.
“Your Electabuzz should know when to celebrate, cos its not now, Pay Day!”
The coins hit Shockwave hard, it didn’t damage him too much but the look in his
eyes, followed by the jolt of electricity convinced the Meowth to stay down
this time.

“Finally, someone who might be a match for the leader...” muttered the last
member, a young lad in purple clothing.
“If this is all his lackeys can do then I’m sure this leader won’t be much of a
match for us.” Emily commented quietly to me.
“Cubone!”
“Bone!”
Emily’s eyes widened, this was a surprise.
“So, a fellow Cubone Trainer.” said the boy.
Emily realised a little problem, how much had he trained his Cubone? Hopefully
the one she had was one of a high level.
“Cubone! Bone Club!”
“Do your best Graveyard, use your Thrash attack.”
“Bone!”
Emily’s Cubone dashed forward in blind rage, the other Cubone simply knocked it
on the head, but Graveyard continued its thrashing and found an opening, it
then started to club away.
“Cubone! Bonemerang!”
Graveyard ducked as the bone went flying, and then started to hit away at the
apparently stronger Cubone, the Thrash attack didn’t give any mercy.
Suddenly the bone came back, it wasn’t called Bonemerang for nothing.
The hit was unexpected and hit Graveyard hard, but before it fell, it threw its
bone at the Cubone, taking it out after the severe thrashing.

“Double K.O.” judged the boy.
“What does this mean?” asked Emily recalling her Cubone.
“I suppose you two qualified, but only he gets to challenge our leader.”
“I suppose that’s fair.”
“Where is he?” I asked.
“Why do you assume that to be a leader, you have to be male?” asked a sweet
feminine voice from the nearby cottage.
She rode in on skates, she looked about thirteen or fourteen and wore bright
yellow and purple clothing, mainly a tight top with puffy sleeves and rolled up
beige shorts.
Her hair was a dark shade of green which had a unique shape, the quiffs and
curls appeared to burst to the sides, the rest flowed down to her shoulders.
“My name is Danielle. I’m a great Pokémon Trainer and I need a challenge.” she
said skating around me, she rode back to her friends and spun around
beautifully before stopping.
“My, you’re cute. What would you like should you win this battle?”
“I just want to get to Saffron City.” I replied.
“Well, that’s an easy request. But if I win, you have to go on a date with
me.”
“What?!” spluttered Emily.
“Oh, is she your girlfriend?” blushed Danielle.
“Well, no, just a good friend.” I replied.
“Then what’s the problem?” she grinned.
“Don’t you have any faith in me, Emily? And its only one date should the worst
happen.” I said quietly to her.
“Do whatever you want.” she sulked.
She seemed a little unhappy at the prospects, best that I try to win this
battle.
“A three-on-three battle then, cutey!” Danielle said throwing the first
Pokéball, I blushed nervously and did the same.

“Seel! Seel!”
“Pidgeo-to!”
“Okay Basher, this’ll be easy for you, Ice Beam!”
“Whirlwind! Fly up!”
“Pidgeo-to!”
This wasn’t too hopeful.
Ice attacks worked rather well against Flying Pokémon.
“Wing Attack!”
Whirlwind flew down fast and slapped the Seel hard with its wings.
“Head Butt it!”
A head butt with that horn could be lethal.
“Whirlwind, try your Agility!”
He dashed away in time and the Seel hit the floor, it was a Water Pokémon and
the sort that did much better when in water, so without any water around, I
might still have the advantage.
“Basher, use your Aurora Beam!”
“Agility!”
He swerved to the side and flew down.
“Peck it!”
“Wait for it...”
The Seel raised its horn so that both Pokémon took damage, Whirlwind bounced
back hurt.
“Ice Beam!”
“Oh no!”
He was too close to avoid, Danielle knew what she was doing and Whirlwind fell
down frozen.
“Whirlwind, Return. I admit you’re better than you look” I commented.
“So where do you want to go for our date, cutey?”
“This battle isn’t over yet!”
“Win or lose, don’t you want to date a pretty girl like me?”
“She’s very forward isn’t she?” muttered Emily.
“Inferno! Go!”
“Char!”
“Inferno, that Seel’s Ice attacks should be no problem for you but remember
that its a Water-type Pokémon.”
“Char.”
He accepted the duel and jumped forward.
“Basher! Aurora Beam!”
“Flamethrower!”
The fire shattered the beam and went straight through to the Seel who fell
down.
“Two more to go.” I said firmly.
“Don’t be so uptight. Its only a battle.”
To me it was a battle I had to win, Emily looked a little jealous as it was and
I didn’t want to risk our friendship or anything, I didn’t even like this girl
in that way.
“Go Plug!”
“Raichu!”
Another Raichu and it was Inferno to battle one again.
“Let’s defeat her Raichu like we defeated Surge’s, Ember attack!”
“Char!”
He spun himself round, surrounded in flames.
“Plug! Use Agility!”
“Uh oh, unlike Surge, she taught it all the Pikachu-Stage moves before she
evolved it.” I commented.
Danielle smiled, as if I were complimenting her, “Thanks for noticing!”
The Raichu was running circles around Inferno.
“Flamethrower one area of the circle and you’ll fry that Raichu!”
“Plug! Don’t run anymore! He’s trying to get a lucky shot, Swift attack!”
“Rai-Cha!” it squealed shooting the stars towards Inferno.
“Inferno, behind you!”
“Cha-ar!” he shouted falling back.
“Plug! Quick Attack!”
“Rai!”
“Inferno, Flamethrower!”
The Raichu sidestepped as it ran forward, Inferno tried again but missed, the
Raichu broke through and extended its feet hitting Inferno and then bouncing
off him.
“Inferno! Slash attack!”
“Char!”
He was lost in rage and pounced, the Raichu bounced up smiling.
“Thundershock!”
“Ember!”
The fire and lightning repelled each other.
“Slash attack!”
“Body Slam!”
The two Pokémon charged forward, the last attack still taking effect, Inferno
dived through the flames while Plug embraced the lightning.
There was an explosion and both Pokémon were defeated.
“Inferno...”
“Plug?...”
We recalled the Pokémon.
“One more round and you’re mine.”
“Don’t get cocky, I’ve got my most reliable Pokémon ready for this one.”
“Well so do I!”
We threw the last balls.
“Star!”
“Clefable...”
Not the most hopeful line-up, the way Danielle had played, she showed that she
had powerful Pokémon that were either evolved or on the brink of evolving, the
ones she had evolved were through Stones and they seemed to know all their
attacks, Twinkill just wasn’t that experienced.
“Aria! Use your Defense Curl!”
“Twinkill! Harden!”
Two could play at that game.
“Aria, now, use Light Screen!”
“Twinkill?...”
It shook its head, it hadn't learned that one yet.
“In that case, use your Bubblebeam!”
“Star!”
The bubbles flew and popped on the Clefable, she took half-damage thanks to her
Light Screen.
“I think we’re ready now, Pound it!”
“Twinkill, Minimize!”
It disappeared as the Clefable fell down on its position.
It reappeared above her.
“Tackle!”
It spun into a blade and bounced off her.
“Metronome!”
She leaped up and hopped about waving her arms, it was quick and an explosion
blasted Twinkill to the floor.
“So now, where do you want to go for our date?”
“Its not over, Danielle, Twinkill, use Recover!”
“Star!”
The blue light restored its health and Twinkill did what I’d probably want
straight afterwards, leap right back in while Danielle was surprised.
“Huh?”
“Twinkill, let’s try our secret move, Psychic!”
“Starrrr...”
Blue light glowed around the Clefable, and then hurled her to the ground.
“Cle... fa... b-”
“Tackle!”
Twinkill finished up before she could get back in the game.

“Good job Twinkill, Return.”
The other kids stood amazed.
“That’s never happened before.”
“The leader will be upset.”
“You won...” she said looking at the floor, “But how’s about I go out with ya
anyway?...” she asked wearing a cheeky grin.
“No thanks.”
“Why not?...”
“I don’t think you’re my type, and we have to go to Saffron.”
“Okay...” she said sadly, then she jumped back up with a happy expression, “And
I’m going to make sure you get there safely!”
I was lost for words, I didn’t want to upset her, just let her down lightly,
but she was persistent.
“Guys, you’re in charge until I get back.”
“Yes oh leader.” they said like servants.
Now we were pretty much stuck with this girl, I hoped that something would
convince her not to stay permanently and destroy this little crush she appeared
to have developed on me.
