Chapter 35: Terror-Dactyl (Part B) by Michael Keens/ Exodus After several days of walking through the canyon, Abby and I seriously needed some time for the feeling to come back into our feet. There was a small shack nearby that seemed to be used for trainers crossing the area, not quite a Pokémon Centre, but a rest stop for people to stay in temporarily. I still had three Pokémon that weren’t tired at all, while Twinkill, Shockwave and Scramble had worn themselves out in their last battle. Inside were many trainers, talking with each other, and several Pokémon peacefully sitting, lying or standing around. Abby fell into a comfy beanbag and let herself sink down, I’d have done the same except there weren’t anymore soft places to sit. I instead made myself useful and took our water canteens to be refilled, they went fast when the climate was so hot. We weren’t anymore than two days away from the nearest port, there, we’d take a ship back to the central region of Kanto, on the east side, and cross through the mountains and forests until we made it back to Fuchsia City. A good plan, if it all went to schedule, which it usually didn’t. I suddenly heard laughter, and some vaguely familiar voices, and then I saw them, four people I had been influenced to hate. Bianca, Sebastian, and the other two: Emily’s old so-called friends, the ones that abandoned her and humiliated her when she had made a simple mistake concerning the love life of Sebastian. When Emily was travelling with me, it took most of the evening to cheer her up after an important Pokémon Battle ended in defeat, and a whole lot of force to keep her from chasing after the four. They couldn’t be forgiven for being so horrible, and even though Emily wasn’t here, I felt I had to stand up for her, something I hadn’t done the last time. “Nice little group you’ve got here...” I muttered. “Get lost loser...” said the girl with blonde hair wearing copper clothing. “He seems familiar...” said the guy next to her, with black hair, green and white clothing, and a foreign accent. “But its missing something, oh that’s right, empathy, consideration and respect, you’ll never be good trainers without those.” I added. “You!” shouted Bianca, “You’re the idiot that hooked up with Emily, what right do you have to insult my friends and my guy?! Emily’s far more pathetic!” “Now you stop talking about her like that!” I shouted, losing my cool, it was no wonder Emily lost it totally the last time. “Emily is a far better person than you, and a far better trainer.” “I think you’re wrong buddy, if Emily were such a good trainer, she wouldn’t have lost to me, twice. Is she afraid to make it a third? That is why you’re pestering us, right?” I was getting nowhere, I only really had Emily’s sad story, and the last encounter to go by. “Forget it, you’re not even worth it.” “Hey!” shouted Sebastian, “You can’t just disturb us with your lame comments and just walk away.” “Yeah, where is Emily? Is she too chicken to fight her own battles?” questioned Bianca. “She’s... not here.” I admitted. “Really, then why are you here?” “I’m standing up for her, going against what you did to her.” “Idiot.” smiled Bianca, “She dumped you, didn’t she? You weren’t good enough for her, loser. Did she see another fella and chase after him instead?” “That’s not how it happened at all!” I shouted. “But you admit she dumped you.” smiled Bianca darkly. “... Yes.” “Well you can forget about getting back into her good books by challenging us, its a fight that you’ll lose.” “I wasn’t trying to do that.” I shouted, though subconsciously, maybe I was trying a little. “Liar. I’m tired of talking to this loser, you wanna help me kick him out?” said Bianca to her friends. As the four members of the group stood up, I reacted the only way I knew how, the only way I could resolve this and come out on top. “I challenge any one of you to a Pokémon Battle.” “Well?...” smiled Bianca, turning her head towards her friends, confident that I wouldn’t be a match. “I’ll do it, my Pokémon need a little exercise.” said the blonde girl. We stepped outside shortly after, Abby had noticed me leave, and came to join me, I had her stand a little way away from the group, their judgements and insults were the last thing that she needed. “Tetsubo, what’s going on?...” she asked me. “These people provoked Emily a lot, and even though she’s not with me, I had to defend her.” I explained. “Oh Tetsubo... You can be so naive...” groaned Abby, she obviously didn’t think Emily was worth it after what I had told her about our breakup, but I wasn’t so hurt that I’d let these people get away with what they did. I didn’t resent Emily absolutely, she did hurt me by abandoning me when it wasn’t fully my fault for lying, but I believed that there was a chance that she’d come back to me, someday... “Go for it Rita...” said the dark haired Spanish guy, highly likely to be her boyfriend, at least I knew my opponent’s name now. “Don’t worry Enrique, this match is already in the bag.” she replied. “Pidgeot!!!” I stared at the large Pidgeot, obviously well developed, it would be a mistake to send out my newly evolved Pidgeot to battle it, so I’d get the hardest Pokémon out first. I when said ‘hard’, I meant ‘hard to deal with’. “ROOOOAAARRR!!!” screamed Inferno, before seeing the competition. “Is that all?...” provoked Rita, “Wings here will blow out that pathetic Charizard’s flame.” “Thank you Rita.” I thought, that was just the ammunition I needed to get Inferno going. “ROOOOAAARRR!!!” he yelled, flapping his wings and rising to the Pidgeot’s level. “Wings! Use your Gust attack!” “Pidgeot!!!” “Inferno! Duck and Tail Whip!” Inferno took a large dive, rose up after the air blast had past, and took a massive swing with its tail to send the Pidgeot spinning back in the air. “Follow up with Slash attack!” “ROOOAAARRR!!!” he yelled, unleashing flames and deliberately ignoring me again. Still, Rita and the group didn’t seem to notice. “Wings! Use your Agility!” The Pidgeot disappeared as the flames blasted by, the Tail Whip attack hadn’t done a lot of damage, and so this match was still in its early stages. “Inferno! Flamethrower!” Instead he slashed, but this is what I wanted, perhaps there was a way to trick Inferno into performing the attacks I wanted. The Pidgeot spun backwards and glared forward in anger. “Mirror Move.” said Rita, and the Pidgeot flew past while gold shiny silhouettes of claws contacted Inferno and dealt him the same damage, more even. “We’ve got no weaknesses to exploit.” I muttered, “I only chose Inferno because he can fly, I guess we’ll have to power on through to win.” “Wings! Use your Whirlwind attack!” The hurricane quickly started and drew Inferno in before I could command a technique, he feebly blew flames in defense, but they were sucked inside and blown out of existence. “Now use Razor Wind.” said Rita, and the Pidgeot needed a few moments to perform this attack. “Inferno! The only way to win now is to use Rage, I don’t care what attack you use afterwards, just do this one thing for me.” I couldn’t hear what was going on, until sharp cutting blasts of solid wind matter cut across Inferno from all angles, and a brief scream could be heard. The whirlwind was wearing off now, and Rita stood back and grinned, before casting a confident glare at me. “Pathetic.” “ROOOAAARRR!!!” “Huh?!” With his power increased to the limit, Inferno crashed down on the Pidgeot, forcing it into the mountain wall, next he flapped his wings and edged backwards, before shooting a red hot flame that turned into a fiery explosion. “Cool...” I smiled, “Unlucky Fried Pidgeot.” The Pidgeot tumbled down and splatted on the floor, blackened and unable to move. Rita growled a little as she recalled her Pokémon, and I decided to do the same, I could always call back Inferno if I was honestly that desperate. “You won’t beat my starter Pokémon.” said Rita, before a fierce, tall and ugly Arbok loomed over me. “Go for it Whirlwind.” “Pidgeot!” “So, you have a Pidgeot of your own, well I know full well of their capabilities. Squeeze, use your Dig attack.” “Dig?!” I questioned, Ground-type moves were absolutely ineffective against Flying Pokémon, but the Arbok had other ideas. It flung itself back, over the group, and into the mountain wall, quickly disappearing inside of it and leaving nothing more than a small hole. “Whirlwind... Um, use your...” “Ch’ar!!!” The Arbok quickly burst through, slamming against Whirlwind and crashing through the other mountain. “Whirlwind, I don’t know what to do...” I admitted, hoping he’d think of something. “Hah, you can’t be that good a trainer if you’re indecisive.” laughed Rita. “Ch’ar!!!” screamed the Arbok, appearing again and plunging its teeth into Whirlwind. He screamed out and shook off the Arbok, but it only dived into another wall. “Pidge... Ot...” panted Whirlwind, suddenly finding it difficult to stay in the air, he was poisoned for sure. “Ch’ar!!!” “Wing Attack!” I shouted, and Whirlwind slapped the Arbok hard, causing it to fall towards the floor, but it lowered the impact by using Dig to burrow into the ground, and quickly jumping upwards. “Use your Mirror Move!” I shouted, suddenly given a burst of creativity. Whirlwind dived, surrounded by a golden aura, shooting into the soil, rising upwards, and catching up with the Arbok, earth smacked into it, and caused it to fall uncontrollably into the wall. Using Dig on a Flying-type was a big no-no, however, copying it to use on a Poison-type: A big yes. But Whirlwind faltered, the poison getting to him some more, the Arbok was shaking its head, not likely to try that stunt again. “Whirlwind, can you try out a Razor Wind?” “Pidgeot.” he nodded, and a circle of stones were soon floating around him, soon to be shot off with the fierce cutting winds. “Squeeze, finish it off with Wrap and Bite attack.” “CH’AR!!!” The Arbok leapt up from the small crater in the side of the mountain, took the damage from the Razor Wind and kept going, and twisted around Whirlwind before slamming its teeth down. “Eo Eo Eo! Pidgeot!!!” he wailed. “Acid attack!” Whirlwind plummeted down as the next attack burnt his wings severely, and crashed down, the Arbok remaining on top. “Return.” I sighed, recalling him and drawing the only healthy Pokémon in my arsenal. “Nido-Rino.” “Hah, piece of cake, Bug Spray, I choose you.” “Para-Secta!!!” “Parasect, the Mushroom Pokémon. The bug host is controlled by the parasite mushroom, energy is drained to fuel the mushroom and it appears to think for the Parasect.” “Grass/ Bug-type, Needle’ll be more than a match.” I muttered confidently, “Needle! Use your Poison Sting!” “Bug Spray, use your Sleep Powder.” Both attacks penetrated the other, Needle looked drowsy and found it difficult to stand, and the Parasect was stumbling to the sides. “You can do it Needle.” “Get up Bug Spray!” Neither of us expected what happened next, we were too involved in our battle to notice until it was too late. A metal sphere dropped down between the two Pokémon and exploded, causing dark smoke to cloud the area. A couple of laughs were heard from the side, and a motto, one I hadn’t heard in a while. “To infect the world with devastation!” “To blight all peoples in every nation!” “To denounce the goodness of truth and love!” “To extend our wrath to the stars above!” “Cassidy!” “Butch!” “Team Rocket, circling Earth all day and night!” “Surrender to us now or you will surely lose the fight!” The smoke cleared about halfway through the motto, and the two alternative Rocket members stood in a confident stance. “Who... are you?...” questioned Rita. “Rita, stay back, they’re criminals.” “Oh don’t worry runt.” grinned Cassidy, “We’re not here for your Pokémon.” “Yeah, but rather, we’re here to perform an experiment, with our newest Pokémon.” smiled Butch, with his usual croak-like voice. “Bring it on, my Pokémon are way better than they were when I fought you last.” I said, a little healing medicine and Needle would recover totally, it was legal since the match had been interrupted. “You remember that Amber we stole from the museum?” smiled Cassidy. I remembered it clearly, they abandoned their mission to steal fossils as soon as Cassidy swiped the Amber, but what was so valuable about it, and what link did it have with a new Pokémon? “This isn’t a simple Pokémon though, underestimate it, and you’re finished.” smiled Cassidy, before Butch drew a Pokéball, and shot the laser outwards, towards the top of a large rocky hill. “AEROOO!!!” it screamed out, everyone except the Rockets gasped, and I hid my surprised face behind my Pokédex. “Aerodactyl, the Fossil Pokémon. It is possibly the most vicious Pokémon around, because it goes straight for its enemy’s throat with its saw-like fangs, most people are happy this Pokémon went extinct.” “If only it did...” I groaned, if Emily’s old gang didn’t help out, I wouldn’t be in a position to defend myself. “Rita!” I shouted, “I don’t know much about this Pokémon, but I know for sure that its a Rock and Flying Pokémon, use your Parasect’s Mega Drain!” “No way! I may not look it, but I care for my Parasect enough not to let it be eaten!” she replied. “We’re all finished if you don’t!” I yelled. “Grrrr- Mega Drain!” “Parasect.” The energy was absorbed, but the Aerodactyl was angered. “AEROOO!!!” “Aerodactyl, use your Wing Attack.” ordered Cassidy. With that, the Aerodactyl screamed and dived, Rita quickly drew her Pokéball and returned her Pokémon, but I did the same a little too late. “Needle!!!” I shouted, as the recall laser hit the wall, and the Aerodactyl rose into the air, holding my Nidorino in its talons. “No!... Help me out here!” I shouted at the general crowd. “No way!” shouted Bianca, “I’m not letting my Pokémon get eaten, I’m not a rubbish trainer like you!” “I’ll help.” said Abby, I nodded in return, and chased after the Aerodactyl. Butch and Cassidy followed, barging past the crowd and running down the narrow pathway. “What do we do Bianca?” questioned Enrique. “We follow ‘em, I want to know how this turns out, plus we can’t have that kid telling Emily that we’re cowards.” It didn’t take long before the Aerodactyl stopped, and on top of a high cliff, I could barely see Needle, and that would make recalling it impossible, Abby started searching her Pokéballs. “These are the only ones that would be of any use.” she said, before releasing her Rhyhorn and Hypno. “Armour, use your Take Down on the side of the mountain.” He snorted, and rammed the mountain with all his weight. The Aerodactyl simply rose a little, as the tremors started, and shot out a piercing soundwave that immediately got Armour all confused. “Return. Nightmare, use your Psychic attack.” “Use... your... Take Down!” shouted Butch, tiredly as he and his partner ran into the area. But instead, the Aerodactyl pulled its head back, and shot a Hyper Beam, blasting Nightmare, and heading towards the pair, they barely dived to the sides, and the beam hit a rocky hill, causing it to collapse on them. “Can’t say they didn’t deserve it...” I muttered, and turned to Abby, she was scared, but hiding it, as she recalled her Pokémon and turned to me, basically telling me that there was nothing left to do. “Aero...” sneered the winged dinosaur, before turning to Needle, and opening its mouth. “Nido... RINO!!!” wailed Needle, helpless to do anything, trapped in the Aerodactyl’s grasp. “What do I do?... He’s not strong enough to fight it. That’s it! Abby, use Any Pokémon, just distract that Aerodactyl!” “R, Right.” said Abby, before her Clefairy appeared and jumped into a Metronome, a Thunder attack was summoned, which shocked the Aerodactyl despite its rocky scaly skin. “Needle! Catch!!!” I shouted, as I threw the object that would turn things around, I just hoped that my aim was accurate and true. The Aerodactyl shook its head in discomfort as the shocks slowly wore off, before turning to its prey, and the Moon Stone. Needle was glowing, and growing, and it suddenly developed the strength to break free of its predator’s claws. “NIDO!!!” Needle wailed, having grown into a humanoid shape, with many spikes, and well developed claws and horns, I had no choice but to evolve him. “Aero?...” questioned the winged beast, before attacking, with its Agility and Bite attack. “Grab it!” I shouted, and Needle did, soon holding the Aerodactyl’s mouth open despite its speed. “Use your Fury Attack!” Needle clawed away, but the Aerodactyl’s Rock side was holding a great defense against Normal attacks. “Dactyl!!!” screamed the Aerodactyl, backing away and then diving down. “Its using Take Down now, Needle! Horn Attack!” The horn hit the Aerodactyl and knocked it back, but only a little. “Think Tetsubo think...” “Tetsubo, perhaps you can use Fighting attacks, I learned that they’re good against Rock-type Pokémon.” suggested Abby. “But Flying-types are strong against it... But still, its as best as I can hope for. Use your Double Kick!” “NIDO!!!” With his new shaped body, Needle surprisingly somersaulted twice while performing two upward kicks, the Aerodactyl fell back, but wasn’t close to being defeated. I heard something, and drew one of my weakened Pokémon in their Pokéball, but it was only the four nasty trainers charging in, yet doing nothing to help me. The Aerodactyl also noticed, and seeing as Needle was too difficult to swallow now, it turned its attention to the humans. “AERO!!!” “Watch out!” I shouted, and then turned to Needle, eager to help, “Needle, try out your Thrash attack! Force it into one of the caves!” Something that I forget to mention, this new area had a lot of holes in the mountains, and with the Aerodactyl planning to prey upon people, we had to banish it. Rita screamed as the Aerodactyl seemed to be glaring at her as it descended, but at the last moment, Needle fell on top of it, and started to beat it down, the Fighting move from earlier had broke through its defense a little, and so this powerful Normal-type attack was doing a lot of damage. The Aerodactyl dived off to the side, but accidentally crashed through a mountain wall, I could just about see it faint, and plummet down a chasm, while Needle jumped off, and used the rage of Thrash attack, on the cavern walls, causing a cave in, while he escaped to safety. The inside and outside of the cavern collapsed, covering up the cave absolutely. If the Aerodactyl were ever to escape, it’d be a very long time until that day. We heard a muffled coughing, and the two Rockets rose from a pile of rocks, a Raticate and Primeape in front of them, having lifting up the heavy pile. “You’re... still here, so that means...” commented Cassidy. “They defeated Aerodactyl... Run!!!” screamed Butch, and they dashed away, along with their Pokémon, very much scared of us for our victory, it was probably a good thing they didn’t notice where the Aerodactyl had been buried. “Um, I don’t really know how to say this...” said Rita, shortly after, with some hesitation. “How about, ‘Thank you for saving my life’?” offered Abby, I could see this meant more than crediting me, but because Abby once acted this way, she seemed angry that Rita did this through sheer stubbornness with no good reason. “Um, yeah. What she said.” said Rita, walking away with the others. “What about our battle?” I asked, “We still have to finish it.” Rita looked up and down, observing my new Nidoking before answering. “Forget it, you’d never win, I was about to beat you silly, and you couldn’t handle the humiliation.” Abby looked really angry, a growing change in her usually calm personality, but I held an arm in front of her so that she couldn’t go after the four. “Let it go Abby, I have.” “But, you would have won... You were defending Emily’s name.” she argued. “They'd never admit it, and I have no right to interfere, its not my battle to fight it seems, not when I don’t know where I stand with Emily... Return Needle, I’m sorry you had to evolve under those circumstances, but you know I did it to save you.” He nodded, as the recall laser dragged the energy matter into the Pokéball. “So does that mean you’re over Emily now? Do you think you can move on, and get on with your life?” asked Abby, a slightly shocking a question for me to answer. “I... guess so...” I answered after some thought, “I’ve been waiting for Emily to return to me for some time, but I don’t think I can hold onto false hope anymore, she’s not coming back, and its time to forget about her, and think about myself for once, and my true friends. Whoever thought those four would open my eyes to the right choice?...” Abby’s eyes lit up a little, and she offered me a rare smile. We continued our long walk, onwards towards new places and challenges, and as for myself, I had made the decision of letting go of Emily, and as hard as it was to admit it, I felt this was for the best.
