Chapter 49: Psychics and Psychos (Part B) by Michael Keens/ Exodus As Abby and Beryl’s Pokémon plummeted, its eyes shot open and it bounced off one part of the cliff wall, had Abby land on its back, bounced off another part of the wall, and then buried one of its scythes into the cliff, but it wasn’t quite enough. It slowed their descent, but they were now directly over part of the mechanical ruins, the Scyther made sure it was at the bottom, and willingly broke Abby’s fall... Back to us, we had started out on a loss, for me, I had let the failures of the other Rockets affect my judgement of the brothers’ Pokémon, we had to fight quickly, and destroy that device before Mewtwo destroyed Abby, I could almost sense her in danger right now. So much so that I decided to go for the machine myself, and slowly crept around the side of the battlefield, the brothers’ didn’t notice me provided I took small steps around the fierce fights, but that would probably change once I got closer. Billy’s Kingler, Sever, still had Shelly wedged open, and raised its claw, before positioning the sharp end at the bottom and dropping it down fast. Shelly reacted and blasted an Aurora Beam to propel the Kingler away, and its Guillotine attack failed as a result. It landed hard, glowed gold to harden its armour, and came forward again, its eyes glowing white in an attempt to scare the Cloyster but failing. Shelly let out a piercing sound wave, but surprisingly the Kingler was not distracted by it, and dived at Shelly, its legs outstretched and small enough to get past the shell and hit the orb inside, Sever stomped hard, leapt off before it could be clamped, and shot several bubbles to distract Shelly, while it crawled forward and threw its larger claw forward to break the Cloyster... Emily’s Marowak was still caught in the windstorm generated by Magnetrio, it feebly aimed a Thunder Wave into the mix but the Marowak had finally got closer to its bone it had briefly lost in the winds, and knocked it back, shocking the Magneton and making it sluggish, the act also cancelled out the Sonic Boom. Graveyard hurled its weapon forward, but the Magneton ducked it and let out a Screech attack, but had forgotten about the boomerang bone which caught it on the return pass. Unfortunately, since Graveyard was distracted, the bone returned to it and hit it in the head. Before it could recover, the Magneton came down on it and pinned it to the ground... Beryl’s Fearow, Soar, was in trouble, the Tri Attack from Twinbeak had paralysed it, and flying up high wouldn’t help as the shocks that occurred were random and would only send it hurtling down if it was in the sky. It hovered above the ground and was forced to fight up close against the man-made Pokémon. The Porygon known as Virtua glowed white and its edges developed sharp points to them, it then hurtled forward, slamming into the Fearow and grazing it, the Fearow growled and managed to catch it off guard with its Drill Peck, but the Porygon managed to stop itself spinning uncontrollably and glow, a blue aura now surrounding it. It had used Conversation to change its type to that of a Flying Pokémon, and charged at it again, the Fearow tried pecking it but Virtua had also Agility to speed itself up. The Fearow was cut again by the sharp robot duck, but still, even if it had hit it, its new Flying-type side would probably lower down any Flying attacks to half damage now. It stopped where it was and another beam was fired, a glowing psychic one by the name of Psybeam, and still confined to the ground, the Fearow couldn’t dodge it, and was battered back. The Porygon glowed once more and became even sharper, and then flung itself forward again, its attack, defense and speed enhanced to make it more than a match for the Fearow... Flutter fell back from the winds generated by its copy, and managed to right itself, but Willy’s Ditto, Shapeshyft, had a wide range of attacks to use, and chose Poison Powder. Flutter grinned and fired a Confusion attack forward which tore up the dust and caught the Ditto in its hold, flung it down to smack against the floor, and then continued to hold it as it levitated it up, Flutter didn’t hold back and flapped its wings fast to generate a mega cyclone to pummel the Ditto, but it was now fighting back, and chose to Harden itself, so when the winds hit it, its new armour also helped it resist the winds and push through them... Beryl’s Blastoise skidded to a halt, bruises all over it from the serious pecking, the Dodrio growled at it, and charged forward to deal out some more, its speed enhanced by Agility, it came hurtling forward and hit the Blastoise with spinning beaks before it could counter, the Blastoise shot out many bubbles to stop it but the three heads popped the majority on them as they ran back, and beat down the Blastoise with their Fury Attack. Before the Blastoise could even pick itself up, a Tri Attack was fired, first burning it, then freezing it, and the last one was the only one that affected it, the shocking... And then there was my Magmar, who got angry at the ambush and unleashed its Flamethrower attack for the first time, Parasite almost fell over to avoid it, tilting its whole body to the side, it then shot forward a green sphere to drain energy from Lavos. Being a Grass-type attack, it normally would be quite ineffective against a Fire Pokémon, but its special attacks were enhanced, Lavos knew this, and tried something reckless, spinning its foot round and delivering a big hit, its Mega Kick tore through the sphere and shattered it into useless particles, Lavos glared at the Parasect, before exhaling a lot of smoke to cloud their battlefield... Abby opened her eyes to the dark area of the wrecked industrial ruins, and looked long and hard at it all. A strange snail-like machine was torn in half, along with many ruined consoles and shattered glass tubes. “Slash, no...” she groaned. It was down, its wings a little bent out of shape, and without the strength to stand. “We have to survive this, I have to make sure you get better.” promised Abby. Abby had barely finished her sentence when the wall at the far end of this room was torn apart, and Mewtwo eerily descended towards her. “Mew... two...” muttered Abby, “It finally hit me, you were the one who saved me when Armour attacked me, you took me to be healed, and you reached into my mind and healed me as best as you could, but in doing so, gave me amnesia, and led to my change... I’m not sure why I remember as if I were awake, you must have left some part of yourself with me...” It didn’t show any reaction to this, it continued to descend, its fingers extending and retracting as if preparing to fire. “If I can remember something like this, surely you must too, you can’t seriously convince me that a powerful Pokémon like you could be controlled by something those brothers cooked up, I’ve faced them many times during my time as a new person, and beaten them, so you must too.” Mewtwo was charging a psychic sphere during this, and Abby squealed as she dived in a useless attempt to dodge, but suddenly, a spark was seen spurting out of the head gear, and the blast missed slightly, instead smashing the snail machine to pieces and scattering many parts around, especially bony-like robotic hands attached to spindly wires. The Psychic Pokémon turned back to Abby, its eyes glowing. “Please... Remember me... You gave me some of my past back to me, now its my turn to make you remember who you are. Go... Armour.” “Rhyyy!!!” yelled the Rhydon, stomping its feet on the ground, before staring up at the threat, and shuddering. “Oh no... I forgot... Stupid! Stupid!” shouted Abby, “For some reason, I also remember some events after I was hurt, Mewtwo beat Armour and forced it to protect me, it doesn’t stand a chance, nor does it have the courage to fight that.” “RHYYYDON!” it suddenly shouted, burying its fists into the floor, lifting up a chunk and hurling it forward. A piercing shriek echoed throughout the room and the piece exploded into dust, filling the area with cloudy smoke. “Armour... You stood up to him... Well I suppose you have grown since I trained you.” said an astonished Abby. “Rhy...” it nodded, but retained a serious and cautious expression. A monstrous scream filled the air, and several beams of shining light practically exploded out of the silhouette of Mewtwo and came raining down on Abby, a Pokéball burst open, and her Gyarados appeared of its own accord, and let out a blaze of blue fire to counteract the psychic rays, but they didn’t halt, they only lessened in power before hitting the Gyarados, who had twisted and curled its body to take all of the beams. It roared out ferociously as it was heavily damaged, pushed back, and then collapsing onto the floor. “Leviathan... No...” moaned Abby, “I can’t bring out my Pokémon only to shield me... They can’t take the destructive power...” Armour seemed to disagree, and stood in front of Abby once again. “No Armour... You don’t have to prove yourself. I know what happened, I know your being my Pokémon was punishment for hurting me, that you stood no chance against Mewtwo, but I beg of you, don’t get hurt because of me...” she pleaded, tears visible in her eyes. “Rhy...” it groaned, torn between its urges to protect its trainer, and her wishes for him not to. Its decision was made by the psychic, as more power was summoned. This time, smaller spheres were scattered, but all flew towards the general direction of Abby. “RHY!!!” screamed out Armour, building up power, and drawing in golden specks of light. It was too late to unleash the energy on the incoming attack, and Armour was blasted by a fraction of it, throwing Abby back, and hiding the results of the havoc on her Pokémon... As the Kingler aimed for a hard hitting Crab Hammer attack, Shelly lowered itself a little and fired off many hard spikes from its shell, two large ones in particular wedging themselves in the Kingler’s large claws, it tried to cut through, but it wasn’t able to break them. The distraction had given the Cloyster plenty of time to generate an effective Ice Beam, and it fired a large amount, slowly freezing the Kingler from the legs, and up all the way to its head. When it was done, the Kingler was utterly frozen, its claws unable to cut through the ice due to the blockages. Graveyard reached out for its bone, but was distracted by the Magneton, holding it down, and screeching loudly right up close, the Marowak couldn’t retrieve its bone, but it realised it had other attacks, and threw its head forward, butting into the Magneton extremely hard and denting one of the spheres. The Magneton retreated, and the Marowak focussed its energies as it did, then ran to the side, retrieved its bone, leapt towards the Magneton and with one clean hit, dismantled it with its bone club. As the Porygon stormed forward, a multicoloured beam shot out of the Fearow’s mouth, and homed in on the unsuspecting Porygon, even though a robotic Pokémon, its eyes had a look of fear a split second before the collision, Soar had used Mirror Move to send back a Psybeam of its own, the Porygon came hurtling out, spinning uncontrollably forward but still dangerous due to the sharp points, but Soar used Agility to rise up in time. Crashing down after so much speed and power was built up (plus the Psychic attack) caused heavy damage to the Porygon, and it attempted to recover its health, but the Fearow came down on its with its Drill Peck to cancel it out, and then used Mirror Move again to recover its own energy by imitating the Porygon, now it restored enough strength to attempt to fly again. The Porygon desperately started firing Psybeams around until it seemingly hit the Fearow, but as it turned out, the Fearow had flown over the beam that had caused an explosion, and it once again copied the attack and blasted the Porygon to pieces. My Butterfree was faced with the heavier version of itself, and decided it wasn’t worth using a physical attack now, instead it fired String Shot that splattered all over the Ditto’s/ Butterfree’s eyes, it hurtled past Flutter, missing its mark, and Flutter hit it with Confusion attack, and sent it hurtling down where the crash weakened it a lot, Flutter then dropped Sleep Powder on it to end the battle. As the superfast Dodrio came running at Anchor, it realised a way to stop even a Pokémon as fast as this one, its cannons extended, and it started blasting small Water Gun jets on the floor around it. As soon as it stepped in one of these puddles, the Dodrio slipped up, the Blastoise had to react fast as the soil took in the water after that and the Dodrio wouldn’t fall for the trick again. It ran at the Dodrio and bit into it in order to lift it off the ground, there it aimed its cannons, and the Dodrio was defeated by a point blank Hydro Pump. Finally, my Magmar was within the black clouds it had created, it came out the other end, its Fire Punch burning out having missed its target. The Parasect jumped up from behind and slashed down the Magmar’s back, but in retaliation, Lavos spat a black poisonous cloud which hit the Parasect and made it dizzy through the sheer poison, and then Lavos blasted its Flamethrower attack to set the Pokémon alight. “Its over guys.” I said, drawing my Pokédex, “And thanks for the new entry.” I said, giving up on the sneak attack since the brothers’ only weapons were unavailable now. “Porygon, the Virtual Pokémon. A man-made Pokémon that consists entirely of programming code. It is capable of moving freely in cyberspace.” “You have no Pokémon left, so step aside.” I said confidently. “Its far from over, I’m recalling Mewtwo, and until he arrives...” said Billy. Suddenly I was aware of the ten Rockets earlier knocked out by Mewtwo were up and surrounding us, each holding a Pokéball. “Oh crud...” I cursed. The smoke cleared, and Abby’s Rhydon had somehow survived, its Hyper Beam must have activated in time to shatter the incoming sphere, the explosion was caused by others exploding around him. Mewtwo was also revealed, and a blue shield was preventing it from being harmed by the attack, it dissipated, and it continued floating forward. Abby’s Rhydon was too tired to fight after expelling all that energy, and Abby decided to give her Pokémon a choice to defend her or not, and realised her remaining four Pokémon. “Pika-CHU?!” “Vul-PIX!” “Cle-Fairy!...” “Hypno...” “I’m sorry to ask this of you, but I need your defense until I can reason with that Pokémon, I know I can do it, I’m the only one its ever truly helped. Please...” pleaded Abby. The Pokémon shuddered, quivered and groaned, but stood it front of Abby and prepared to help. Sparky and Pixie generated Light Screens to ward off the psychic attacks, while Foxfire and Nightmare took a more offensive approach, the Vulpix sent Confuse Rays towards the Mewtwo, while the Hypno sent wave after wave of Psychic attacks at it. The machinery unfortunately protected it against the transparent beams, as being probably the most powerful psychic Pokémon ever, the small Psychic attacks did it no real harm, as they exploded all over its headgear. The Mewtwo clasped its hands together, and fired a sphere, it landed slightly forward of Abby, but the shockwave blasted the Vulpix and Hypno back, smaller spheres followed, and the onslaught tested, strained and soon shattered the defensive barriers and sent the other two Pokémon hurtling back into submission. Only Abby and her Rhydon remained in front of the Mewtwo, now dangerously close, it rubbed its hands together, and sent small spheres to crash down in a straight line, until it hit Abby, its target. Abby could see the pattern of the exploding spheres and shook her Rhydon, not willing to leave it lying where it would surely be hit, she gave up on that and searched for its Pokéball, but overestimated the time she had, the next psychic sphere came down on her, but was blocked by a screaming Rhydon. It had leapt up to defend its trainer once more, and was blasted back, its armour was very much cracked and shattered everywhere, even its horn had been broken, and it was now close to death. “ARMOUR!” screamed Abby, running towards it, holding it, and crying out for it. She soon turned back to Mewtwo, floating right next to her and holding two growing spheres, about to destroy her after hurting her Pokémon so much, she growled at Mewtwo, and then shouted out: “What you have done is unforgivable!!!” The words, the actions taken, the assault on the machinery and the memories had slowly affected Mewtwo’s controlled mind, but what Abby had said was exactly what Mewtwo had once expressed to Armour, and that seemed to make the difference. As Mewtwo had been charging its final psychic attack, its metal headgear started bursting with sparks, and it clutched its head and screamed out, dropping its energy spheres and accidentally setting one of them off right next to it. The explosion blasted Mewtwo back to crash through what was left of a console and computer screen, while the second sphere exploded off to the side and blew a huge chunk of the wall and ceiling away. Abby slowly stood up after it was all over, “Mewtwo...” she uttered, before falling to the floor, “I didn’t mean to...” As she started to cry, for Mewtwo, and her other Pokémon, her Rhydon in particular that would probably die way out here, a glowing pink sphere floated in through the large hole, and revealed itself to be: “Mew.” Abby gasped, “That’s... Mew...” The little pink humanoid cat floated playfully towards the wreck of the machine, eying it with curiosity, when Mewtwo’s battered body came falling out to land hard on the floor, its metal attachments shattered but now injuring the psychic cat. “Mew.” smiled Mew, and hovered around in a circle over Mewtwo, dropping sparkling dust on him. The body flashed white, and then returned to normal, the injuries and armour now gone. As Mewtwo groaned to pick himself up, Abby walked forward slowly, put an arm around her shoulder, and helped lift him up. “You...” he groaned, “You were the one I saved...” “Yes Mewtwo, and I remember what you did.” she answered. “What have I done?...” gasped Mewtwo, looking at the devastation around it, including the hurt and dying Pokémon, “Once again my power has led to destruction, is that the only reason I exist?!” “Mewtwo, things can be fixed, I saw Mew heal you, could you-” “Yes, I know. Mew, please help that injured Pokémon, and heal the others too.” he pleaded. The Mew cocked its head to the side, and smiled, before performing the same motions over Abby’s Rhydon. “Mewtwo, do you remember what happened to you?” Abby asked. “Yes... Those scientists from Team Rocket did this to me, as revenge for what I did in the past, I must stop them.” he stated. “I think my friends have got that under control, please, I need to talk with you before you leave.” Abby pleaded. “I owe it to you, I saw you call out for me, but was unable to free myself until now... You saved me... Thank you...” “I had to, I feel that a part of you has always been with me, I owe you so much.” said Abby with a peaceful smile. “I suppose you want me to tell you about your past, but the truth is, I can’t risk delving into your mind after it was damaged so, I’m sorry...” sighed Mewtwo. “Don’t be, I’ll find my family, and my new life has been great, I have friends now, so I don’t really need to know who I was.” comforted Abby. “I wasn’t sure if a person with no memories could adjust and grow as much as you have. You are a very strong person, and I’m very proud of you.” smiled Mewtwo weakly. By now, the Mew was done with the Rhydon, and healed up the other Pokémon while Armour picked itself up off the floor, its white glow faded and it was fully healthy. “Armour...” cried Abby happily, running forward to hug the Rhydon, it returned the hug, but kept a constant eye on Mewtwo. “That’s... the same Pokémon that attacked you, you say you remember everything about what happened, and yet, you could forgive this Pokémon?...” questioned Mewtwo in disbelief. “Armour has grown too, what started as a duty became more of a choice as our love and friendship grew, I have forgiven this Pokémon, as I forgive you for what happened today...” explained Abby. “You are so full of love, I wish the world was more like you, but they would never accept me: A destructive clone...” sighed Mewtwo sadly. “Don’t be so quick to judge the whole world, there are heartless ones like Team Rocket but also loving people, I hope you’ll be accepted one day.” comforted Abby. “No, I can’t, there are some Rockets that still know I exist, I realise that now, all this time they have probably been thinking up ways to use me as a weapon, and they are probably on their way here now! I must return to the clones and hide away from the world, else my power might destroy it.” realised Mewtwo. “No Mewtwo, the Rockets on this island are the only ones that know you’re here, along with my friends, but I understand if you have to leave anyway.” corrected Abby. “I would normally erase the memories of those that know of my existence, but I can’t risk that sort of thing on your fragile mind, I trust that your friends wouldn’t reveal me to evil hearts.” explained Mewtwo softly. “I won’t risk it, I know its a burden on me, but I won’t tell anyone of anything that might endanger you, but I feel as if a part of you will always be with me.” sighed Abby. “And you with me. Thank you...” said Mewtwo, smiling slightly. As the girls and I backed into each other, the Rockets all started laughing confidently. “Are you sure we can’t take ‘em?” asked Beryl. “We could try, but they have more Pokémon, chances are, we’ll lose.” I sighed. Luckily for us, Abby had seemingly got through to Mewtwo, and blue psychic beams shot into the Rockets and knocked them unconscious, he then descended to face the brothers, no machinery affecting his mind anymore. “How could he have escaped?! This machine-” shouted Billy. “Shut up! He’s going to fire and destroy us like he did our parents!” cried out Willy. Mewtwo fired a large blue sphere, which floated over the brothers and destroyed the large machine while leaving them unharmed. “No more killing...” he said, although only Abby could hear this telepathically, “I’ve hurt these people enough, revenge isn’t the answer, but still they must not remember this.” With that, the brothers were hit by thin blue beams and fell unconscious. “Are they going to be alright?” I asked. “Yes.” said Abby, “They just forgot about this whole incident so that they don’t report Mewtwo’s location and try this again.” “Mewtwo...” I called, “Thanks for saving us.” He turned to the side in order to look at me briefly, and then stood with his back to us, a small Mew floated beside him, and they both shot off into the sky. “Where are they going?” I questioned. “I can’t say...” smiled Abby. “You knew them didn’t you Abby? You’ve met them before?” I questioned softly. “In a way, I did, but with any luck, we’ll never see them again.” she smiled. “What do you mean?” I asked hastily, but figured out for myself that it was best not to have Team Rocket obtain an opportunity to repeat what happened here. “You seem different Abby.” I observed. “Things are just clearer now, I still have to find my parents and rediscover who I used to be, but for the first time, I feel value in who I’ve become.” she said with a peaceful expression. “Don’t ever tell yourself otherwise Abby, I’m proud of the person you are today.” I spoke firmly, “I just wish I could know what happened with Mewtwo.” “Perhaps I’ll tell you one day...” Abby smiled, gazing into the air. “What should we do with the Rockets?” asked Emily, “Arrest them?” “We can’t, there’s not enough room on the boat, and if one were to wake and attack us...” warned Beryl, recalling her healthy Scyther. “You’re right, and technically they’ve done nothing wrong today, at least, from their perspective.” I said. “Let’s return home.” smiled Emily. We soon set out back to Fuchsia City, the world was unaware of the destruction that could have been unleashed upon it, but I doubt anyone would believe us, do you? Anyway, we returned back at my home days later and separated. The Pokémon League was now only two months away, and I had a lot of work to do to prepare myself for it...
