I had completely forgotten about these awards, but Christine reminded me that the 5th season awards were due back in January 2000. Let's just say that if I were in charge of the Academy Awards, we'd still be weighing up the pros and cons of Gone With the Wind.
I was going to make these a poll, allowing anyone interested to cast a vote for nominated episodes, but I wasn't able to download the codes. Which means that this is the same one-opinion show as the 4th season awards were.
BEST COMEDIC EPISODE
NOMINEES: Bride of Chaotica!, Someone
to Watch Over Me
THE WINNER: It has to be Bride of
Chaotica. Someone to Watch Over Me was wonderful, but we rarely get
to see Janeway ham it up in peacock feathers.
BEST ACTION EPISODE
NOMINEES: Timeless, Dark Frontier,
Juggernaut, Relativity, Equinox
THE WINNER: Decisions, decisions
... Dark Frontier was the action episode of the 5th season, but
the truth was, it wasn't particularly original or exciting. Relativity
was incredibly fun to watch, but it was let down by some continuity problems.
Equinox, Juggernaut, Timeless ... anyone got a three-sided coin?
{pacing} And the winner is {opening envelope} Juggernaut, for giving B'Elanna
some much needed screentime and action.
BEST MUSHY EPISODE
NOMINEES: Drone, Once Upon a Time,
Gravity, Course: Oblivion, Someone to Watch Over Me, 11:59
THE WINNER: Someone to Watch Over
Me, with Drone a close second. Once Upon a Time was just a little
too
mushy, Gravity's lead guest star had an irritating voice and Course: Oblivion
{choke} wasn't real.
BEST EPISODE OVERALL
NOMINEES: Timeless, Counterpoint,
Equinox
THE WINNER: Toughie. Equinox
2 was frankly more interesting than part 1, but Counterpoint was that rare
animal, an intelligent Voyager episode. But Timeless is an even rarer
animal: an ensemble episode. And everyone died. What more can
you want?
BEST ACTOR IN AN INDIVIDUAL EPISODE
NOMINEES: Robert Picardo (Someone
to Watch Over Me), Robert Duncan McNeill (30 Days), Garrett Wang (Timeless)
THE WINNER: Garrett Wang. Picardo
and McNeill were excellent as usual in their eps, but neither really broke
new ground. Garrett, though, was amazing.
BEST ACTOR OVERALL
NOMINEES: Robert Picardo, Ethan Philips
THE WINNER: It would make a lot of
sense to just name this the Robert Picardo Award for utter excellence ...
but I'm going to give it to Ethan Philips, who really deserves a lot more
credit than he usually gets.
BEST ACTRESS IN AN INDIVIDUAL EPISODE
NOMINEES: Kate Mulgrew (Counterpoint),
Jeri Ryan (Infinite Regress), Roxann Dawson (Juggernaut)
THE WINNER: {sigh} Why can't I have
an obvious choice for once? Erm ... I think it has to be Jeri's
performance in Infinite Regress -- she displayed a range I hadn't thought
she possessed.
BEST ACTRESS OVERALL
NOMINEES: Kate Mulgrew, Jeri Ryan,
Roxann Dawson
THE WINNER: It has to be Kate.
Jeri and Roxann are both excellent, but without Kate, the series would
be nothing.
BEST GUEST ACTOR
NOMINEES: J. Paul Boehmer (Drone),
Mark Harelik (Counterpoint), John Savage (Equinox 1)
THE WINNER: I like all of these options,
but my ultimate choice would be Mark Harelik, whose performance in Counterpoint
brought a lot to the episode.
BEST GUEST ACTRESS
NOMINEES: Susannah Thompson (Dark
Frontier), Lori Petty (Gravity), Kate Vernon (In The Flesh), Scarlett Pomers
(Once Upon a Time, et al)
THE WINNER: Scarlett, the only child
actor I can tolerate.
And now for the fun stuff...
WORST EPISODE
NOMINEES: Bliss, The Fight
THE WINNER: Oh, the agony ... The
Fight. Bliss was stupid, but at least it made sense.
WORST PERFORMANCE BY A REGULAR ACTOR/ACTRESS
NOMINEES: Robert Beltran
THE WINNER: Finally, a no-brainer.
Although it's worth pointing out that, in a scene cut from Juggernaut,
he actually changed his facial expression.
WORST PERFORMANCE BY A GUEST ACTOR/ACTRESS
NOMINEES: Musetta Vander (Disease)
THE WINNER: One guess. (She
also played the preying mantis woman in season 1 of Buffy -- a double crime.)
