Irrigation
Photo taken in 1977, showing Penny 6yrs, Barrie 2, and Nigel 4.
The children are standing on the bank of the inlet channel. The water wheel was to be balanced on the pegs seen at Penny's feet. The open upright pipe the wheel is balanced on is the overflow control - its top is above the level of the channel. The water slide, beside Nigel, is lifted to allow water to flow from the main channel, into our property.
The water wheel measures the flow of water into our pipeline, by showing the number of revolutions it makes per minute - the faster it turns, the more water we have flowing through the 'slide' or inlet gate.
The building on the opposite side of the channel is accommodation for eight, and used during the picking season.
