97.7 Goes International!

In the Pena Ajena department, the latest news that local radio station 97.7 has gone to live internet broadcasting should cause the citizenry of Merida to rise up in shame and burn the station to the ground along with those cd's they keep playing over and over. I would say to include everybody there, but I don't want to be accused of inciting anyone to do anything, and besides there are probably some nice people hanging around who made a rather unfortunate (for neurotic foreign listeners like me) choice when they decided to pursue a career in radio.

BackInTime - A New Musical Genre? Someone tell Virgin Records to build a new section!
As if inventing a whole new musical genre called Back In Time specifically for the Merida market wasn't bad enough (a Yucatecan friend says she loves any music that's back in time, and now there's even a local band called, you guessed it, Back in Time) they have come up with what I think is probably the stupidest program in the history of broadcasting called ...

RompeRolas
Tonite I was listening to RompeRolas, an completely idiotic program where you call in to request a song, then someone else can call in to stop that song and ask for a different tune. But each subsequent caller is 'required' by the """DJ""" to say goodbye to the previous song. Each and every song that is requested is immediately and authoritively classified as 'muy buena' and is heard almost immediately. The purpose of the program seems to be to showcase the latest piece of equipment they bought, that calls up songs immediately and without delay. This whole charade, complete with only little snippets of music and that totally """cool""" """DJ""" is their latest venture into 'really cool stuff' radio. Listen to it and cringe.

While We're on the Subject of Radio . . .
So whatever happened to 100.1 Espacio FM? I know you were wondering about this tragic . Apparently the station has dissapeared out into that same espacio and was swallowed up by some black hole, only to be regurgitated back in the form of Inolvidable (unforgettable) 100.1, a much tamer, musically less exciting radio format. Does that mean that hyper Guillermo Canales will no longer be yelling out english song titles? I think I'll miss him...
