The Casual Restaurant Critic

You might agree or disagree with my opinions, but that's life, isn't it? And no, I get no commissions or kickbacks from any of the places favorably reviewed - I do this entirely for my own amusement and your information.

New Pizzeria in Town

If you like your pizza really Italian, baked in a wood-burning oven and faintly reminiscent of Rolandi's in Cancun, the Pizzeria Bologna is a new and beautifully appointed pizzeria that only recently opened it's doors (to me anyway - I don't get out enough) in Merida. An offshoot of the justificadamente famoso Due Torri this place is gorgeous to look at, from the the plants and flowers out front (look for the Italian flag) to the interior fountain and terra-cotta roofed terraces in the back.
On the menu, besides wood-oven baked pizza with real salami, prosciutto, mozarrella and an authentic 'you can see the tomatoes' sauce, there are several varieties of spaghetti. The mesero suggested I try the Spaghetti Saporiti, basically a creamy Alfredo with a roquefort kick; it's absolutely outstanding. The Pizza Vegetariana, with zucchini, tomatoes and other veggies was quite good too. A small but decent selection of wines complements the very attentive and friendly service. Really. I know it's hard to believe, but service is getting better and friendlier every day here in Merida, and in most cases it's owners from other places that are making the difference.

However, don't overdo it on the pizzas and spaghetti; leaving without trying the icy-cold frozen lemon pie would be downright stupid. Made on the premises, this slice of tart refreshment is worth the visit by itself. Cafe espresso is alright; however, someone mentioned recently that each refill of regular black coffee is charged as a fresh cup and that it was very expensive. If anyone else has had a similar experience, or if this is an ill-founded rumour put out by some jealous (and they should be) competitor, let me know.

Located in the Itzimna part of town, where Il Grotto used to be, across the street from Heladios (the one that didn't burn down).  Open from 7:00 p.m. to midnight most nights and yes, there is an a/c part available.
Happy eating! I was going to put bon appetit, but thought it would be just too corny, and it sounds more like french to me.
