Places and Monuments (even more!)

Look at these beautiful shots of downtown Merida at night - Calles 61 and 62... as seen from the Plaza Grande, and below, the cathedral.

The New Olimpo building, (shown here on the left) built during Patricio Patron Laviadas term as mayor, replaced a taxi parking lot
on what was the site of the original Olimpo building, demolished in the 70's by a cotton-headed mayor
who didn't have the vision or sensibility to preserve or rescue the colonial building from the ravages of time.

The construction of this building was roundly criticized by those against removing the attractive parking lot and
spending money on a building instead of water and other services for Merida's poorer districts.
