Camp Packing List

Basic List - For Most Camp-Outs

 

___ Backpack or duffle bag to hold the gear.

___ Full class A Scout uniform (incl. neckerchief, beret [when earned], etc.) – wear, don’t pack

___ Scout handbook

___ First aid kit, small personal

___ Flashlight and extra batteries

___ Pocket knife (folding), with Tote ‘n Chip

___ Water bottle

___ Eating utensils (knife, fork, spoon)

___ Cup

___ Bowl (or personal eating kit)

___ Poncho/rain gear (waterproof, not water-repellant)

___ Sleeping bag or suitable substitute, season appropriate

___ Personal ground cover (old shower curtain)

___ Toilet kit, including:

___ Soap, in a container

___ Toothbrush, toothpaste

___ Washcloth

___ Comb

___ Medications, if appropriate

___ Tissues or handkerchief

___ Hiking boots or sturdy sneakers – wear, don’t pack

___ Extra pair of shoes (sneakers or moccasins)

___ Extra clothing (at least 1 full change)

___ Extra socks (1 pair per day; more if hiking)

___ Extra underwear

___ Pajamas, sweats, or other attire for sleeping

___ Towel, small (e.g., gym towel)

___ Plastic bags for wet things and to keep things dry (several – ziplock are ideal)

___ Notepad, steno or smaller with pen or pencil

___ Eye care/extra glasses in a hard case, if needed

___ Cap or hat, season appropriate

 

Never Bring

___ Electronic gear of any kind

___ Fixed-blade/sheath knife

___ Anything that can’t be replaced if lost or damaged, or cleaned if dirty

___ Alcohol or tobacco of any type

___ Anything illegal

___ Anything unScout-like

___ Firearms or archery equipment

___ Sneakers as primary footwear when rain or snow is possible

___ Open footwear (e.g., sandals), except for swimming pool use at summer camp

 

Optional for Most Occasions

___ Sleeping pad

___ Pillow (small)

___ Matches and fire starter, in water tight container

___ Sun protection

___ Insect repellant

___ Toilet paper (1/4 – 1/2 inch roll, flattened)

___ Lip balm

___ Compass

___ Sewing repair kit (needle, thread, safety pins, etc)

___ Rope, small, 6-12 feet

___ Sunglasses, especially for snow or beach

___ Playing cards or small non-electronic games

___ Camera, inexpensive

___ Fishing gear (check ahead for availability)

___ Personal tent (check with a leader first)

 

For Summer Scout Camp

All of the basic list plus the following:

___ Medical form signed by doctor

___ Swim trunks (1 or 2)

___ Beach towel (1 or 2)

___ Sweat shirt/jacket for cool nights

___ T-shirts, Scouting appropriate

___ Shorts

___ Long pants (at least 1 pair)

___ Water shoes

___ Merit badge pamphlets, as necessary

___ Merit badge prerequisites, as appropriate

 

For Cool Weather Camping –
Early Spring and Late Fall

 

    Remember that the nights can be cold. All of the basic list plus the following:

___ Thermal underwear

___ Gloves

___ Heavier sleeping bag, or two bags (one inside the other)

___ Extra layers of clothing, such as 2-3 sweat shirts

___ Warm coat

 

For Winter Camping/Klondike

 

    All of the basic and cool weather lists plus the following:

___ Thermal underwear (2 pairs minimum)

___ Gloves, waterproof (2 pairs minimum with snow)

___ Winter weight socks (e.g., wool socks and/or sock liners are ideal)

___ Snow boots instead of hiking boots

___ Sunglasses (recommended if snow and sun)

___ Hand warmers (optional)

___ Knit cap, especially for sleeping

___ Snow pants/snow suit
