My name is Tang Wai Fong Elsa. I am studying the master of the product design and mangement in the University of Liverpool. My master's project is to design a new bowling machine for cricket practice at a low cost and a non-powered system.

The purpose of this project is to design a new pitching machine for cricket users to develop reactions and techniques. In the design, the spring powered system is used to propel the cricket ball at different speed.

Design Project Specification

In the sport pitching machine, the main project specification is designed or produced a low cost non-powered system to propel the ball automatically at different suitable adjustable speed, rotation and angular direction. The design will be done by CAD and some hand drawing. Beside the above, it is also more concerned about the accuracy, repeatability, precision, safety and quiet. Moreover, the machine should be enhanced safety features, lightweight, compact, set up fast and easily, portable, affordable, easy to operate, elevation and angular adjustment, long life cycle, warranty, quiet and height adjustment and ball capacity or feeder and drive system. The British Standard (BS 7000) is the guideline or checklists for managing the design. It includes the specification, conceptual design, and feasibility design to provide a good quality to achieve the project specification.

What's New

Objective

The aim of this project is to design a new ball flinger/bowling machine for sports practice (Cricket) to develop reaction and techniques and test a low cost non-powered system to propel the balls automatically at various speeds and rotation for sport practice. It should be lightweight, portable, accuracy, repeatability and precision. It should be applicable to both outdoor and indoor use. Moreover, the safety guard is also designed to that machine for safety use. The machine is done by simple spring system and level system instead of electricity.

The main objectives in support of this aim are shown in the following points:

Objective 1: To make a research or analysis of the existing products and compare their advantages and disadvantages.

Objective 2: To design a new cricket-pitching machine for practice to develop reaction and techniques.

Objective 3: To set out a comprehensive design methodology for all the phases of the product specification, product planning, product design, and development of the manufactured processes for the technical system.

Objective 4: To know the aerodynamic of the cricket and the force applied to the cricket.

Objective 5: To create a conceptual drawing and how to find out a non-powered system to propel the cricket in the proper way. The spring- powered should be used in the design.

Objective 6: To create a detail CAD drawing and test a non-powered system for controlling the different suitable adjustable speeds.

Objective 7: To create separate detail CAD drawings.

Objective 8: To make an assembly drawing for the cricket-pitching machine.

Objective 9: To make animation, photo-realistic shading model, or mechanism how to operate the machine.

Objective 10: To make some finite element analysis to test the stress and strain in the device.

Objective 11: To define the manufactured processes and calculate the costing.

Objective 12: To draw up the conclusion and results to the machine. (How many speed and height adjustment)

Objective 13: To prepare a manual for the user.

Summary

In this design project, the new pitching machine is designed for cricket users for the sport practice to develop the reactions and techniques. The objective of this project will design a new ball-throwing device or cricket-bowling device for cricketers. Beside the traditional system, the non-powered system is the new design. Therefore, the spring-powered system should be chosen and used in this main design to provide a non-powered system. It also produces at a low cost.

The design processes will be stared from calculating the force applied to the ball, investigating of aerodynamic force of cricket ball, developing the specification of the machine, designing the conceptual design and detail design. Based on the project's aim, the aerodynamic effects of different spins on pitched cricket balls should be investigated and concerned about how to propel the ball in the proper way. Finally, the materials selection and manufactured processes are also the major part in this design project.

According to the project, the detailed CAD drawings will be done after the interim stage. The finite element analysis will be done for the materials. Final the manual should be produced to help the user to use the device.
