THE TEACHER AS READER

            The best teachers of reading are also reading teachers, in the sense that they are teachers who read.

            One of the easiest ways to improve your teaching is to read a lot yourself; with any luck, you will also enjoy the experience, painlessly improve your command of the target language and perhaps enhance your job prospect.

Reader are made by readers

            Students follow the example of people they respect, and above their entire teacher. It is important to demonstrate that you value reading.

If you don’t read much in the target language

            Once you have improved your mother tongue reading, you can go on to, improve your target language reading. If you are reading a lot in your L1 your problem is not so serious.

            First of all, motivate yourself by choosing FL books that you enjoy and find it easy to read. This is just as important for you as for your students, especially if you have no real need to read the FL.

            IMPROVING YOUR READING

            Reading the graded readers is a good way to begin your programme. You can go on by using a reading efficiency handbook if you wish, but the most important thing is to increase the amount of your reading.

            For this purpose, choose short books that easy enough to read quickly and that you will enjoy.

            Try to do the some target language reading everyday and finish at least one book aweek.

            After only a few months, you should notice a very marked improvement in your reading efficiency.

            In addition reading will give you a source of profit and pleasure that lasts throughout your life.
