El Tejanito visits México

The National Association for Chicano/Chicana Studies (NACCS) held its 1998 Annual Conference in Mexico City. El Tejanito left Austin by car at 6:30 a.m. for the airport in San Antonio. Ah, the miracle of modern transportation! By 3:00 that afternoon, El Tejanito was overlooking the expansive Capitol of Mexico from the peaceful hillside of Tepeyac, where the Indian Juan Diego first saw the apparition of La Virgen de Guadalupe, madrecita de las Americas.

La Basílica de Guadalupe sits at the base of the hillside of Tepeyac. Three different Basilicas occupy the space, representing three different eras of Mexican history. My favorite is the middle one which was constructed at the turn of the eighteenth century. The structure is cracked due to earthquakes and an unstable foundation; and it is gradually sinking into the ground because Mexico City was built on a lake. I don't know which was more skewed--the Basílica or Tejanito's camera.

Los colegas

Here is a picture of El Tejanito's colleagues (and friends!), who traipsed and tramped with him through Mexico City. A great time was had by all; and I will never forget it!

¡ Y que coinky-dinky! Mexico's Marcha de Orgullo was held on the same weekend as the NACCS Conference. See the above link to view some photos of the parade.
