Politics; even the word makes me squeamish. I look at it and the first thing that comes to my mind is, "huh?"      My Grade 9 history class turned out to be 85 per cent on Canadian government and well, I failed that class. It wasn't because I didn't do all the homework that was assigned or that I didn't pay attention to the lectures or even show up at all. No, I did every assignment handed to me and I never missed a class. I failed because as soon as the teacher started his lecture, that one little word began to flash in my mind like a neon sign. Huh?      I understand that Canada has a prime minister, provinces have a premier, and cities have a mayor. I understand that there's federal, provincial, regional, and local government. The absolute basics are crystal clear, but as soon as someone starts getting into a little more detail my eyes glaze over, my mind fills with fog, and that three letter word starts flashing again.      My opinion on politics is that there are way too many people working for it. I don't see why there has to be so many. The country is in such debt as it is, there's really no need for that many overpaid politicians, is there?      True, running a country is never on sale. It's expensive and much to our dismay, money doesn't grow on trees, but wouldn't a smaller government mean less spending? I say, keep the prime minister, keep the premiers, and keep the mayors. That's all we really need anyway. Couldn't the government run with just them? I guess we will never know.      Frankly, I don't really care much for politics. In fact, I hate it. What really ticks me off about politicians is their campaigning. They stand up there and give their speech about all the things that they are going to do or change if they are elected. But they always twist their meanings or leave out the important parts. They take all the toppings off the pizza and just hand us the crust. Politicians should tell the truth and I mean the exact truth. Honesty and trust should go hand and hand. We place our country, provinces, and cities into the hands of these politicians, trusting that they will do a good job. Shouldn't they be totally honest with us right from the beginning?      But as I said, I'm quite clueless when it comes to government. I don't understand how the government works. I don't understand why we have so many politicians. Perhaps I never will. Perhaps politics will forever be that three letter word etched in my mind. Huh? |
