Legend of the Shadow King

By Jenn Somers

Once upon a time, in a land far away away
Where the hazy skies hung a dreary grey
In a dark, forbodding tower upon a hill
A king of old lay silent and still

For years he's sat there upon his dark throne
Fury's flame engulfing him as he sat there alone
For centuries he had remained this way
And year after year, the skies grew more grey

For a shadow world was this and the Shadow King was he
And never in centuries had a speck of light been seen
But bowing their heads the people longed for light
And their haunting cries echoed through the endless night

Hope was forgotten, laughter was lost
The ideas of love and happiness, tossed
Then a hero rose, like none the world had seen
Mysteriously appeared where no hero there had been

He laughed and he danced as was filled with great gladness
As the people around cried and hung their heads in sadness
For never before had they seen such a boy
Who's unfaultering smile, showed great joy

He sang as he danced all through the town
But the people stared back at him with frowns
They thought him crazy, they thought him queer
To dance around and not show fear

Thier haunting cries once again echoed out
The sound of water dying in a drought
"A shadow world is this," they cried. "And Shadow King is he
And never has there been a boy that's filled with such glee"

They pointed to the castle on top of the hill
Where the old Shadow King lay, silent and still
Seated there on a chair of bone
Drowning in fury, forever alone

The gave a shiver as he looked up the hill
"If no one will face him, then I guess I will"
And with a nod, he bounded up the hill
To face the Shadow King, silent and still

The air grew darker and gave out a chill
And from the pit of his stomach he bagan to feel ill
He took a deep breath and opened the door
And entered a castle no one dared enter before

And there on his dark throne was the Shadow King
Who gave a cry and spread his wings
And the people below yelped with fear
And stained the air with their tears

With wings blacker then the dead of night
The Shadow King was quite a sight
His beak was curled and eyes filled black
And a twisted spine stuck out his back

The Shadow King stared with cold, dead eyes
And seemed to smile at the people's cries
"Who are you to enter here,
And stand before me without fear?"

"I'm but a boy that has no name
The world cried for me and so I came.
Your people cry and long for light
So I'm here to end this endless night."

Then the Shadow King laughed and threw back his head
And the people below shook with dread
He found it funny, he found it queer
To have a boy stand before him and not show fear

But the boy said nothing as he looked at the King
The out of the blue he began to sing
A song of love, a song of light
Of sun and moon and starry nights

As the Shadow King listened, silent and still
The boy's song drifted down the hill
A song of laughter, a song of smiles
The sweet song drifted across the miles

Then people began to laugh and began to dance
They began to smile and they began to prance
The birds began to sing and wind began to blow
A party broke out in the town below

And on his dark throne, the Shadow King
Gave a cry and spread his wings
The shadows stirred as he fled away
And from the darkness was born the day.
