"Elvis Sightings and Faith: making sense of the seemingly ridiculous" - Nigel Patterson
Discusses two distinct types of Elvis sightings and people's psychological need for Elvis to be still with us. Stories abound of Elvis appearing to people in times of distress, and comatose children being healed through his intervention. These phenomena are beyond empirical proof and a matter of faith. Where this is leading is a matter of conjecture. |
"Elvis Presley: hero with a thousand faces" - Susan MacDougall
This paper explores the notion that Elvis Presley is becoming semi-divine by comparing his life story with those of legendary and mythical heroes, and other archetypal beings. Presley appears to fit more than one archetypal pattern of the mythical hero / king / god. His features even resemble some of the ancient ones, as depicted by statues. According to psychologist Carl Jung, myth is the conscious manifestation of archetypes within cultural memories in the unconscious mind; according to anthropologist Joseph Campbell, all mythical stories are fundamentally the same story, or "mono-myth". Elvis's story resonates strongly within us because it matches these "unconscious cultural memories". |
"Elvis Presley: Hillbilly Cat or copycat?" - Graeme Flanagan
Summary
Graeme will play examples of several CD tracks which compare
and contrast Elvis's versions of the songs with the original versions.
He will lead a discussion over whether Elvis was a true innovator and a legitimate interpreter of African-American music,
or merely just another white artist who blatantly ripped-off black artists for his own benefit.
"Stories behind the gospel songs" - Madeleine Wilson, presented by Susan MacDougall
Summary
It is said that every picture tells a story. The same can be said for songs. During research studying the life of Elvis Presley,
Madeleine Wilson has been amazed and delighted by some of the stories she has heard about how people's lives
have been affected by listening to Elvis's singing, especially the gospel songs.
Why are the gospel songs so powerful, especially when sung by Elvis?
Seven songs are presented for discussion.
