WELCOME

This website was originally created as a resource for fans of the score to Star Wars: The Phantom Menace who were disappointed in Sony Classical's original 1-disc edition of the music soundtrack to the film.  Recently, Sony made a large step toward rectifying that inadequate compilation by releasing a new, 2-CD ULTIMATE EDITION.

With that release, every note of John William's score AS IT WAS PRESENTED IN THE MOVIE is made available in fantastic sound quality.  However, this release is still not EXACTLY what fans had hoped for, as it recreates the score in the film down to the last edit, the result being that cues are not always heard as John Williams' most likely intended them to sound.  The major drawback is that some cues were recorded longer than they appeared in the film, and are actually shorter on the ULITMATE EDITION (UE) than they were on Sony's first Original Soundtrack (OST) edition of the score.  Perhaps the most drastic example of this is THE FLAG PARADE, which is about 1 minute shorter on the UE than on the OST.

And then there's THE BATTLE OF NABOO.  In the finished film, Reel 6AB was almost entirely "rescored" in post-production editing, and on the UE bears practically no resemblance to what John Williams originally intended.

So the focus of this sight has shifted a little bit.

Originally, my aim was to help interested fans to piece together their own edits of the score by cobbling bits of music together from the OST and the music files of several Lucasarts video game cd-roms (The Phantom Menace, Racer, and Jedi Power Battles).
Additionally, I posted audio files illustrating how I had edited together my own "Special Edition" CDs, using the above mentioned sources and a few moments from the film itself.
I was comfortable posting these files for two reasons:
(1) someone took a copy I had made of these files and began selling them as bootlegs.
I HAD NOTHING TO DO THIS, and have been a vocal opponent to this from the moment I heard about it.
I hoped by offering them for free, it would cut into bootlegger's profits and make it less worth their while to try and sell these illegal CDs.
(2) the relatively low fidelity of the game files, and the artifacting of MP3 compression kept the files from competing with the sales of the OST (which I figured everyone probably already had anyway) and the video games (which no one bought just for the music, I'm sure!).

However, with the release of the UE, virtually all of the music is now widely available.
I have no intention of posting any high quality music files, because I really believe they may cut into sales of the UE, and if you want that music, you really should BUY THE CD.  One is not leading a revolution against Sony or George Lucas by stealing this music.
My worst fears came true when, on THE JOHN WILLIAMS MESSAGE BOARD at
Ricard Befan's great JOHN WILLIAMS website,
incensed fans were planning on boycotting the UE and expecting me to make my own edits of the material freely available in high-quality MP3 files.
Folks, that's not what I'm about.
GO BUY THE CD IF YOU WANT TO HEAR THE MUSIC.

I have a few LOW QUALITY examples of edits I have made available on this website.
The purpose of these files is to illustrate some of my theories on how THE BATTLE OF NABOO may have originally been concieved by John Williams.
These files are in mono and at 32kbps.
I WILL NOT MAKE HIGHER QUALITY COPIES OF THESE FILES.
I will not contribute to thievery or piracy of this music.

THE FOCUS OF THIS SIGHT
is now to analyze the OST, the UE, and the video game files,
and come up with a version of the music that most accurately reflects
what I feel were John William's original intentions with the score to
Star Wars: Episode 1: The Phantom Menace.
