Vector Addition

Vectors are a walk in the park -- literally. You have direction and distance. Think of vectors as "silly planks", with heads and tails, of given lengths and always pointing in the same direction no matter where you throw them.

Sorry, this page requires a Java-compatible web browser.
Note: The vectors above have been given the names s and t instead of the AB style.
The length and direction of s and t can  be changed by dragging its points.

To add vectors s and t, take the TAIL of t and move it to the HEAD of s.  Then s + t simply means you walk along plank s and continue along t.
If you're asked to create a single vector (s+t), simply make one that goes straight from the tail of s to the head of t.
