I just love this movie.  I was not much of an Annie fan b/c of the 1982 movie.  Granted, I loved it when I was a little kid, but I had a tendency to jump on the bandwagon.  Nice songs, but the movie always baffled me.  Plus Tim Curry scared the shit out of me as Rooster (and now I could jump the man.  Go fig).  Anyhoo, I was very glad to see a new spin, and quite happy to see Alan.  I was just nervous that he would act just like Tim did.  Luckily, he was divine.  This movie means so much to me.  It was the movie where I fell for Alan, for real.  Ok, storytime!!
For some reason, I was just compelled to watch Alan on the talk show circuit all week.  For years, I heard my mom praise him.  Since she has good taste, and since I had a vague idea of who he was, I just always agreed that yeah, that guy is talented.  But he just...stuck....in my mind since Circle of Friends.  I'll be honest, he made me sick in that movie!!  He was SO good though!  But oh did I ever want to hurt him.  Anyway, I remembered his name (I have a useless memory for those kinds of things and should be a casting agent).  My mom recognized him in Goldeneye, but I wouldn't believe it.  Then I recognized his name in an article for Spice World, and was quite...well, pleasantly surprised.  I watched Romy and Michele on cable in June 1998, and then came home to find my mom raving about that Alan Cumming guy.  She knew who he was b/c he just won a Tony for Cabaret and all that good jazz.  She saw so many clips of him and just thought he was amazing.  I had seen a Conan episode (the "dry-shag" one) months before, recognized him, and decided to watch, thinking Wow, Sean Bloody Walsh has definitely cutened up, hasn't he?  I remember talking about him with an ex-best friend who saw him do Cabaret twice.  And then...I remember on election day, 1999...Conan was postponed that night b/c of the vote tally.  I learned that Alan would be on and just had this compulsion to stay up as long as it took to watch him.  Well, that was the "I killed the fish" interview.  Then, I remember *having* to watch him on Martin Short's show.  I remember seeing his skinny self come out in those plaid pajama/raver pants and sleeveless top, and feeling shocked and slightly snooty.  Then I realized...take the stick out of your ass girl.  He looks awesome, and he's not afraid, which was so refreshing to see (in my world, especially).   So then I was all excited for Annie, and got all cozy that Sun night to watch it.  I enjoyed the movie immensely, but when Alan came on as Rooster and Kristi Chenoweth came as Lily, well I fell in love with them both right there.  It was when Alan started singing...omg.  I lost it.  I could not get him singing "eaaaasyyyy streeeet" out of my head for a 36 hour loop.  I got the sndtrk (well, i needed more lyrics!!), and just couldn't get over how beautiful his voice was and how charismatic he was.  Then I searched around on the Internet and eBay.  Found him in makeup (drool), Found the Out magazine...ran out to the bookstore IMMEDIATELY...and then my life was changed forever from that article.  He just...understood.  It was a life altering experience.  He has just helped me be comfortable with MYSELF...not who other people want me to be.  Then I bought the Cabaret sndtrk... was thrown off by the Two Ladies pic, but warmed up as I flipped through the book.  By the time I got to his last pic showing his legs and had listened to Willkommen, I was smitten.  No ifs, ands, or buts about it.  I started him off as #8 on my list...bumped to #4 within a week...made it to #2 the next.  He was under Seth Green for at least 4 months...until I saw Titus probably.  No... probably when I got the Cabaret book for X-Mas.  Yeah, that had to be when.  Started spending ridiculous sums of $ just to see footage in Dec 1999.  Started my leopard star journal, starring Alan, in Jan 2000.  Started my web page as part of a class project in March 2000.  And I've been sufficiently scaring and educating people ever since!!!
Anywho, if it wasn't for
Annie, it would have been an even longer time before I discovered Alan.  I can't believe it's only been a year and 4 months since my love first started.  Wow.  That is so short.  I have never ever been so smitten before.  He's my muse,  that's for damn sure.  Wow.  A year and a half, and I already met my first celeb, who just happens to be my absolute favorite of ALL time.  Bless Broadway.
