Sam Mendes, revived Cabaret in 1993 at the Donmar Warehouse in London with Alan Cumming as the Emcee. Mendes would not bring the show to Broadway unless he came, too.  Alan only agreed to the role if it would be done realistically.  He's not too into musicals and only did Annie b/c Rob Marshall, co-director and choreographer of Cabaret, begged him to.  The focus was more on the seediness and blindness of the Kit Kat Klub and Weimar Germany. Alan portrayed the Emcee as more of a druggie, smart-ass street kid, who also happens to "swing every way." This was a huge change from Joel Grey's androgynous, smarmy portrayal, which was etched in peoples minds.   He read more of Christopher Isherwood's work (the author whose quasi-autobiographical stories Cabaret was based on), to really get a sense of these "sex clubs" and the debauched, decadent lifestyle. The main books are The Berlin Stories and Christopher and His Kind (the real autobiography).   Cabaret won rave reviews from many and was the hottest ticket on Broadway.  There is also a national touring company.  Alan performed from March 1998 to June 6, 1999, with a 3 month break in between time to film Titus (Robert Sella took over for that break). 4 years later, despite many cast changes and recent NY occurrences, Cabaret is still holding its own very well on Broadway, just celebrating its 5th year on March 19, 2002..
