this is my favorite alan role (besides the Emcee, of course).
It is also my favorite movie right now.
Titus, one of Shakespeares first plays, is a work of art.  Julie Taymor was perfect to direct, especially considering what she did for The Lion King on Broadway.  I will be commenting more on the movie later, so let's focus on Alan for now.
The papers described him as campy and over-the-top.  Well, they were absolutely right.  But that was the perfect portrayal.  Nothing was ever wishy washy to the caesar-like emperors back in Roman times. Saturninus and Tamora were very compatible in that sense.
Saturninus is a big baby who throws tantrums if he does not get his way.  Only Alan could make these tantrums sexy.
Tamora is the ruler in a way.  She has him so whipped after she is free and they are married.  He doesn't seem to mind...he gets to put on a lot of makeup, party, slurp up grapes (teehee), and get some booty.  He's dictatorial and temperamental to the point of being bipolar.  Actually, Freud should be paged with these two, as she's a "mother to his youth" and satisfys his lust.  He's always all over her, but she's just using him.  What's great is seeing an older, voluptuous woman with a younger skinny man.  That just rocks.
Saturninus is more appealing when he's on a leash (don't we all wish), but i do love that pure leather outfit when he's introduced....ahhh.  He does prove his passion for Tamora at the end, which i believe kind of redeems all his actions.  It's the first time he didn't think of himself first.
