SEAFOOD Incest, horror, mysteries of the unexplained and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre – it must be Seafood After releasing three great singles, ‘Scorch Comfort’, ‘Psychic Rainy Nights’ and ‘Porch Light’, having their beautiful acoustic song ‘We Felt Maroon’ included on the Snakebite City compilation and playing some impressive gigs it seems as though another lot of Fierce Panda recruits are going places. So while they are still small enough to speak to the fanzine population, here they are… Firstly, everyones favourite question, who are you and watcha’ do? David Line: Guitar, vocals and I also do flares. Kevin Hendrick: I’m the bloke with the bass and background singing. Caroline: Drums and tuneless backing vocals. Charles Macleod: I do Swedish guitars. Charles couldn’t play at Reading, was it festival over indulgence or a ‘proper injury’? David: After spending a month away in Canada, Charles decided to come back to England and throw himself through a glass door, thus ripping to shreds both his hands and landing him a night in casualty and another month away from his ‘axe’. This is a fair representation of the luck of Seafood. Still we plough on in the world of lo-fi guitar mayhem. Kevin: Charles is well and truly back in action and the world is a better place for it. Did you like the vast area of the Melody Maker stage at Reading or do you prefer small dingy venues? David: I really enjoy the smaller venues and I like the fact that people are getting to know our songs and we are starting to get a bit of foot tapping action in the front row. I am looking forward to our first stage diver and some panty throwing action. I also enjoyed Reading but to be honest I was shitting myself, hence the cowboy hat. Kevin: In hindsight, Reading was fantastic but at the time I was wobbling with nerves. Sweaty, small dingy venues do have a ‘were it’s at’ feeling. The bigger venues we’re played are the best. Oh yes, big sound systems where you can hear yourself. Caroline: Every one is different…obviously. Why did you play ‘Wave of Mutilation’ by The Pixies, was it ironic because of Charles? David: The Pixies were my all time favorite band. For Charles and myself they were the first band we saw live at the grand old age of 16 and they were fantastic! Kevin: The Pixies are an influence and the mutilation theme seemed apt. Who are you main influences? David: Duran Duran, Madonna, Big Black, Sunny Day, Real Estate, Quickspace, Sebadoh, Pavement, Sonic Youth, Drop 19’s, Palace, Wonderstuff and Carter USM. Kevin: Ramones, Black Flag, Public Enemy, Pixies, Teenage Fanclub, Slint and oh so much more… Caroline: I grew up listening to hymns, tap and ballet music, the first band I saw live was Vanilla Ice! This led to Guns n Roses, Nirvana, The Smiths and Velvet Underground, then Delgados and Grandaddy. How did your song ‘We Felt Maroon’ get on Snakebite City 8? David: It’s a song I wrote before I met Kevin and Caroline and it’s a little love song. It got on the Snakebite comp because they really liked it and we said they could have it. They originally wanted ‘DIG’ but at the time Fierce Panda had misplaced the DAT. Kevin: Deep down David is strictly a pipe and slippers man and when he’s not singing about horror, incest and death he is most content being poetic about love and doughnuts maaaaaan… Have any major labels shown an interest in you and what’s the next single? David: Major labels have so far evaded us and I’ve no idea what the next single will be. Kevin: Not sure, we’re focused on the debut album at the moment. No doubt a single will preceed it. Major labels are scary and we’re not perhaps the most commercial poptastic kids on the planet. Those music guys must have pretty deep pockets, err, perhaps. Are you living the life of indie rockdom or are you still working at HMV and going to Uni? David: I’ve just finished at HMV and I really hope that record company comes along real soon. At present, we live in the gutter of indie rockdom. Kevin: I’ve just finished uni and I’m supplementing my indie rock life being a high class secretary by day and an erotic dancer (The ‘greasy nipple’) by night. Oh yes. Finally, what’s your favourite post gig tipple? David: A bottle of water and a spliff (I’m not much of a drinker). Kevin: A nervously anxious can of venue provided booze. Caroline: Anything and everything that’s wet and tasty.
