HOW TO BUILD A MAGICAL ROUTINE

First you learn a simple trick, then you learn a move, and then at last you learn how to do a trick with the move. Next comes the process of forming all of those tricks into "routines". Routines are a series of magical effects that follow along within the same thought. This thought is an over-all theme that runs through the entire sequence of events.

To better understand the idea I will use the tricks that I have taught you on this site in an example. In one of my routines, I begin by talking about ghosts, then say that I would like to show the audience a ghost. Introducing a deck of cards, I shuffle them thoroughly, and proceeded to perform COIN CROSS claiming that the quarter I produce is the ghost of George Washington. As proof that he is a real ghost, I perform "COIN through the HAND KERCHIEF". As the finale' I make the coin (ghost) disappear in some way.

You might want to consider adding to the routine above by doing "COIN CROSS" and making a "ghost handkerchief" appear with "ROSE to HANDKERCHIEF". Perhaps you could stretch it even further by explaining that the reason you know it's a ghost is that you cannot tie a knot in it, then performing "KNOT that's NOT" using "COIN through the HANDKERCHIEF" as a finale'. However, this will be enlarging the routine into a small show and that's another lesson altogether, so let's just stop right here.

You can find more magic by visiting one of my favorite links on this site or by visiting your local magic store. With all the magic that you learn you will eventually be able to build routines that fit your own personality and performance style. Good Luck in all your magical experiences.
