The Ravyn Appears
By: Rhona Lyons
She stood out side the little antique shop, looking in at an intreaguing weapon. 'If only I could hold it in my hands.' She sighed. It was then she began to feel like she was being watched, and she was, by a young man and a teenage girl across the street.
"Now that be an interesting lady." Gambit stated, giving the woman an indepth look over.
"What about Rogue?" Jubilee inquired, uninterested in Gambit's conquests.
"What she don' know don' hurt her, Petite'" He replied, unknowingly to her retreating form. Moments later he was jolted back to reality by the slaming of a car door. In a split second the girl was gone, he shook it off, "Hey!... Petite'!... Wait for me!" He hollard walking briskly toward the car, noticing that she sat in the drivers seat. "It's ok, you can drive de car, Cher' won' mind." He smiled, hopping in to the passenger seat.
The girl let out a sigh of relief as she watched them leave. She slowly wandered back to the window, pulling out her clapsable cane as she walked.
A short time later. ...
The car pulled slowly up the drive to Xavier's Institute for Higher Learning. It had a very important visitor, Miora MacTaggert. Quietly a young black and red haired woman began to carry luggage toward the mansion door. She walked with a slight limp, favoring her left leg ever so slightly. Something Henry McCoy made sure to place in his mental notes. She wore a black tank top and spandex leggings, with a pair of riding boots. As she drew closer, one could see that she also wore dark sun glasses and a black choker. Gambit was the first to offer his assistance. He never even had a chance to say a word when he was thrown across the drive to the grass by a soft as velvet word. "No." She replied, just before Gambit was sent in to flight.
Jubilee was the first to his side, the girl just stood where she was, waiting for Miora to catch up with her. "Sorry." She replied to Miora and Xavier as they approached her, setting down their luggage.
"He'll survive. I'm Professor Charles Xavier, Miora has informed me of some of the incidents that have happened to you lately. We hope to shed a little light on the situation. I feel that you will fit in just fine with the rest of students." He stated, trying to give a little comfort to the nervous girl.
"I'm still not sure I should be here." She replied, looking at Miora with pleading eyes.
"You belong somewhere they can help you control your gifts. They can help you where I caenna. Give him a chance, he has helped many others like yer'self, he can help you." Miora stated in a motherly tone. "Besides...you promised to give it a try, you've been here only a few minutes an' you're ready to give up."
"An' I've already hurt someone. Duenna' you see, I only hurt people with this curse. How caenna you leave me to hurt your friend?" She questioned Miora, hoping deep down that she could just go back home to her solitude and her books.
"Why don't we discuss this in side out of the sun." Xavier suggested, turning to see Scott and Storm walk toward them. "Storm, could you help Miss MacPhearson with her belongings, she'll be staying in room 18."
"Sure, Professor." Storm replied, reaching for a few of the larger suit cases. MacPhearson gave Miora a pleading glance.
"No Serina, you've stressed it enough for one day. Let her help you, you caenna do it all alone any more." Miora replied, handing her her cain to stop further arguing. She waited with Jean and Scott, watching her walk away, her limp more noticeable now with her cane. "You've got you're hands full with that one. She constantly pushes herself to the limit when it comes to her leg."
"I'm sure that it bothers her to have a handicap, I know it does me at times. She'll be fine. How did it happen?" He inquired as they began to move toward the mansion.
"It's a long story." She replied.
"We have awhile before you have to leave, why don't you try to tell us about it, it'll help." He stated, as they entered his office.
"Where do I begin?" She sighed.
"How about the begining, when did her powers surfice?" Xavier asked.
"She's always had them, since birth with some of them." She answered.
"Are you saying that she hid them all this time?" Dr. McCoy asked, surprised at the prospect of a mutant birth.
"She was born with psychrometry and a defect in her eyes and bone structure the rest you'll have to find out from her, she won' tell me anythin' about them. You heard how she sees them, she thinks it a curse. Her family beat her repeatedly, saying it was a demon in her. Then they dumped her on my island when she was about six, by that time her leg had been broke 26 times. She has two P.H.D's, one in ancient artifacts and one in ancient mythology. She's also good with animals and is studying Botany. She burries herself in the hardest classes as to keep her mind off her powers." Miora explained, pacing the floor.
"Why don't you sit down and drink your tea, then you can tell me more about this last incident that made her take private classes." Xavier replied, taking a sip of her tea.
In room 18....
"My name is Storm, what's yours?" Storm asked, trying to lighten the tension.
"Serina....Serina MacPhearson." Serina replied, putting her clothes in the dresser.
"You're Scottish, now that's refreshing. Xavier has pupils from all over the world. I'm from Cairo myself. Gambit's from Louisana, and Cannonball is from Kansas. But it is here we now call home, Xavier has been able to aid all of us in dealing with and controling our powers, I know he can help you as well."
"I take it from your name that you conrol the elements?"
"Yes, I do. We all have very special gifts, Scott shoots a power blast from his eyes, he is known as Cyclops. Remy charges inatimate objects, also known as Gambit. Rogue can absorb peoples powers, and Jean is a telepath. Then there's Beast, Dr. Henry McCoy who is a genus as well as strong, and Cannonball flies at a sonic rate. Xavier could read minds and Logan who has accelled healing as well as adamantium claws. Then there's Warren who has wings and flies, Bishop who re-chanels energy and Psylock who is a telepath like Jean. What about you?" Storm inquired, placing an empty suitcase it the closet.
"I kill people." Serina replied softly. "I'm sorry, I'm not sure what they are. I know that I was born with psychometry. I used it to aid the police on tough cases, usually murder cases." She explained, placing the last suitcase in the closet.
"Don't worry, everything will work out for the best." Storm comforted.
"Hey, Storm. Came to see who blasted Remy." Psylock said from the door way. "Hi, I'm Betsy." She said entering and offering her hand in friendship, recognizing this girl right off the bat. "Oh my God." She gasped. "Serina? Serina MacPhearson?"
"Elisabeth Braddock?." Serina replied shocked, Psylock pulling her into a tight embrace. "When did you arrive here?" Her fear seemed to fade fast. This impressed Storm, Serina obviously knew Betsy, but from where?
"Several years back, after graduation and you left for Japan." She paused, letting go of her old school friend. "Oh, the Summers want to see you in the office when you're done unpacking." Psylock replied with a smile, "And it's our turn to cook, so I need you in the kitchen."
"I'll be there as soon as I show Serina to the office." Storm replied turning to Serina, "If you're ready?"
"I guess. I can finish this later" Serina answered, following Storm out the door.
Storm led her down to the first floor of the mansion and to the office. "I'll leave you here," Storm said ou side the door, "If you want, I can show you around later."
"Maybe tomarrow, I have alot of work to catch up on. Miora wouldn't let me work on the plane, but thank you anyway." Serina replied politely.
"Ok, tomarrow then." Storm smiled, watching Serina enter the office.
"Please come in and sit down." Xavier said, pointing at a chair next to Miora." Miora has explained a few things to me and I want you to know that it's not your fault. What I need to know is when your powers surfaced."
"I was born with most of them but new ones showed themselves starting at the age of nine." Serina replied quietly, giving Miora a betrayed look.
"Like what?" He asked, studying her closely.
"Like plant growth."
Miora gasped at the information that she had just heard. "I dinna' know about that, why did you keep it from me?" Miora asked, still in shock.
"'Cause I knew you'd send me away, you are now, aren't you?" Serina stated softly, never raising her voice.
"I'm doin' this to help you, not because I want to." Miora defended, knowing that she was being attacked with guilt.
"An' what is wrong with me that I be needin' help, Miora? I'm the perfect student, I been payin' my own way and when I need a little family support after a major ordeal you send me here. All I want to do is finish my degree then I caen begin teaching, what's so wrong with that!" Serina's voice raised with the last sentence, quieting Miora.
"Actually there's nothing wrong with that, if you do it with moderation. But you have two degrees already and your only twenty two. These degrees take people years to achieve and you've done it in four years as well as finished two years on a third one, all of which are difficult corses to compleat." Xavier stated, noting that Serina was begning to feel out numbered.
"Did she leave out the computer degree?" She gained her answer by the expression on their faces. "I thought so, did she also tell you that I graduated from high school at thirteen? Probably not. Look if this is all you want to know about then request my school records as for the incident, you have no idea what happened. Now if you'll excuse me I have work to catch up on. Good bye." Serina announced, leaving them in awe at how she handled their discussion.
"You were not kidding when you said she was a hand full. I'll have to remember that I am talking to an intelectual when I speak with her." Xavier replied, impressed by Serina's intellegence.
"I dinna' know about the computer degree, she must have done it with one of the others." Miora stated, still stunned.
Not too long later...
Serina had found the danger room, it didn't take her long to program a set of acrobatics for her to do to burn off the anger that welled up inside of her. She designed a gymnastic rouine and walked down to the door.
"Ooh, a gym routine." Beast stated, seeing the configuration appear on the door monitor. "Mind if I join you?"
"It's just a simple routine, not what you're used to, I'm sure. But yeah, if you want." Serina replied, entering the room.
"I haven't done one of these in a long time." He stated, seeing the gymnastic bars appear, as well as the rings, horse and beam. There was also a mat for tumbleing exercise. "I'm Henry McCoy, or Beast if you wish."
"I'm Serina, pleased to meet you." She said, not trying to be rude.
She immediatly began on the un-even bar while he worked on the rings. Moments after they began, they began to be observed by Gambit who sat in the obsevaton booth.
"Who's Beast's new playmate?" Wolverine inquired as he entered the room.
"Our newest student, MacPhearson and she a wild one at that." Gambit replied, his eyes never leaving her.
"Oh, so she's the one who blasted you, eh?" Wolverine snickered.
"Yeah, yeah. Laugh it up, we'll see what she do to you." Remy chuckled.
It wasn't long before everyone was in watching the two work out. It was then that Wolverine decided to throw a few obsticles in their path. "Let's see what this baby can do." He whispered.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you." Betsy warned.
"Well you're not me." He muttered. He began with a few lasers, then threw in some androids. Serina dodged them easily, but was tagged when he increased the difficulty. She handeled the changes easily, only getting hit every once in a while. It wasn't until Beast was in danger that they all recieved the shock of a life time. She flew up and then they dissapeared. "What happened? Where'd they go?" Wolverine asked, surprised as the room cleared, they were no where in sight.
"Right here." Came a velvety voice from behind Wolverine, her hand resting on his shoulder. "I don't appreciate my routine being altered. Don't do it again." Serina half growled, vanishing before any of them could respond.
"How'd she...." Gambit began.
"Teleportation" Henry replied with a smile."I think I'm in love." He muttered leaning against the door frame as he left. as he left.
"Miora, did you know about this?" Xavier asked, turning to face her.
"No. But Sean might." She replied.
"Call him, find out what you can. The rest of you, split up and find her, I don't want to loose her." Xavier announced, watching them disperse.
Jean attempted to use ceribal to locate her but just as she got a fix on her, she smiled and circuts began to over heat. It was then that Miora entered the room, seeing the monitors smoldering. "Charles," She said breathlessly, "It's not good. Sean is on his way. He says she caenna go more than four miles at a time but she can go that four or five times before she becomes almost catatonic. We have to find her." She informed him, paniced.
"X Men. She can only go four miles four more times, fan out to sixteen miles from the mansion and work your way back, she may be in a state of unconsciousness. Time is of the essence." Xavier announced. "She was last in a thick wooded area "
"She's not in the mansion." Jubilee reported.
"No, she's not." Xavier stated flatly, as Jean kept trying to recontact her.
"I can't reach her, cerebal is over heated." She replied.
"I will try with out it." Xavier replied.
Wolverine headed the west, he knew the area well and the thickest stretch of trees was there. Gambit took Rogue's car and went the round about of the same area. Psylock and Angel went north while Rogue went south. Storm went east and Jubilee searched the grounds.
It was Wolverine who found her first, she seemed to have stumbled on to a few bikers about twelve miles out, and they were up for a good time.
"Let her go." He said in a demanding tone, as he watch them toss her from person to person.
"Why? You wantin' a piece of her too?" One of them asked in a drunken slur.
"I guss you could say that, and I ain't wanting to wait for you."Logan replied, releasing his claws.
"I wont wait for any of you" Serina stated, disapearing with the man who still had hold of her.
"Well now, it seems that you all miss out" Logan replied "Except for me, who's first?"
Her luck seem to run a little short. She was only able to go as far as a few yards away and out of sight of Wolverine. When the man could get no responce, he began to slap her hard hoping that she'd snap out of it. It was his movements that attracted Gambit's attention. He pulled over and quietly approached them.
"Gambit here, I found her, and she's got company. I'm about twelve miles west of de mansion on a dirt road." He whispered into his radio.
"On my way Sugah." Rogue replied.
Gambit didn't wait, he rushed in to the clearing. "Seems that you have bad luck wit' de ladies." He stated, getting the mans attention.
"Who are you?" The man asked, pulling a knife.
"My card, Missure" He replied, throwing the three of clubs. The man was stupid enough to catch it just before it exploded in his hand. Gambit then began to try to rouse Serina, but all of his attempts failed. She just stared blankly. Rogue arrived shortly after the man dissappeared.
"We need to get her back. Beast will know what to do." Rogue asessed, lifting her into her arms. "When you gonna get your own car, Remy, and quit using mine?"
"Why, Chere, I like yours just fine." He smirked, heading for the car.
"Then you wash it. I'm gonna fly her back, it'll be faster."
He watched her leave, "You do that Cher, I'd rather get close to something that holds what I can't."
