Confusion

Confusion

It was early morning when crashing pans in the kitchen woke the students at The Institute for Higher Learning. The night watch, Rogue, had drifted off to sleep shortly before the clatter began. She rushed to see who was making the racket. The sight she and the others saw was a pitiful sight, Serina trying to cook.... blind.
"What on earth are you trying to do?" Rogue asked seeing pan scattered everywhere and what seemed to be attempts at cracking eggs in a skillet.
Serina jumped, startled by her voice. "I...I got hungry and... I didn't want to bother anyone." She stammered ashamed at what was probably a big mess.
"Bother us, PLEASE." Logan grumbled walking back to his room.
Gambit stumbled to see what she had in the pan. "Make mine scrambled with cheese and mushroom please."
"What?!" Rogue exclaimed, pushing her way into the room to see.
"It looks good, smells good and I want to see if it tastes good" Remy defended, getting a cup of coffee. Rogue took a look in the pan, and he was right, it did look good.
"I'll take some, if you are offering." Beast said, scratching his head, making his way to the coffee pot.
"How'd you measure de coffee, Petite?" Remy asked. It was almost perfect.
"With my hands and a measuring cup. Does everyone want cheese an' mushroom?" She asked, then to Remy, "Can you find the bacon for me, I couldn't find it." Xavier sat back and assessed the situation. It seemed that Serina was tired of depending on others for her needs.
"Is the coffee hot?" He asked, making his way to the table.
"Are you all nuts? She's blind! You all expect her ta cook for you?" Rogue said amazed at what she was seeing. Storm and Jubilee came in with Scott and Jean.
"What smells so good?" Jean asked, seeing Serina at the stove.
"Just making breakfast, want some?" Serina asked, walking to the refrigerator to get more supplies.
"Yea, love some." Scott replied stunned, sitting down at the table. He leaned in toward Xavier, "Is it safe for her to be doing this?"
Storm approached the table, "Why not? It will give her the confidence that has eluded her till now." She move to observe Serina as she work.
"Storm's right, you know. Serina has been coddled by us for weeks now and it has only frustrated her further. We all seem to do everything for her so she had no confidence in her own capabilities." Xavier stated as Serina began to serve them.
"Besides, Scott, I'm blind not deaf." She said, setting his plate in front of him with out error or guidance. "Now, if you will excuse me a moment, I need to make a delivery." She left the room with a plate and a cup of coffee.
"She's been making a mental map of the mansion, so she can perform with out her blindness hindering her." Storm informed them, setting herself to eating. They all began to try the food she had prepared, including Rogue.
"Hey! This is good." She said, surprised at what her friend had accomplished.
"She can cook for me anytime." Gambit replied, finding that she had put cajun spices in his.

Logan had crawled back into bed, pulling the covers over his head to block out the light. He grumbled at the knock at the door. "Go away." he snapped.
The door opened and he could hear the clatter of a cup on a saucer. "No." Came the soft reply, as Serina closed the door and placed the plate beside the bed. " I came to have breakfast with you."
"Later." He said, rolling away from her. She made her way to the window, finding the curtains closed. She gave an evil grin and ripped them open. "Close those or else." He threatened, rolling back.
"And if I don't?" She taunted, walking back to sit beside him on the bed. "We've known for weeks that I'm your daughter, but I still know very little about you, why?"
He grumbled, lowering the blanket to see her face. "We've been busy with other things. Now close the drapes and go away. We'll talk later, like after noon." he said, watching her walk to the window with out using anything to guide her. He also stole a bite from her plate.
She smiled. "I heard that." She said as she walked back, using the wall to guide her back. "I brought you some coffee." she replied, feeling for the cup, and handing it to him.
"You can see the light, can't you?"
"Yes. It's getting better. I wanted to show you first." She said as someone knocked at the door.
"Wolverine?" Jubilee said through the door. I brought you breakfast." She opened the door slightly, "Serina did an amazing job on it..... Oh!" She said as she pushed the door open to see her in the room. "I'm sorry."
"No, come in." Serina said. "Did you get enough?"
Jubilee set the plate down, "Yeah, it was really good."
"I was just telling Logan that I feel like I'm getting better." Serina informed her, feeling the tension. "Well, I think I'll go take a shower. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Talk to you later." She said, kissing Logan on the cheek and walking out the door.
"What's up, Jube?" He asked her.
"Nothing, just got a lot on my mind, that's all."
"Well I'm here if you want to talk." He said, pretty sure that she was jealous of Serina for being his kid.
"Yeah... sure. I gotta go." she said, closing the door behind her. He sat there for a moment, think of the two of them, then ate both plates of food gratefully.

As the days passed, Serina became more and more self efficient. She was even doing simple exercises in the danger room with Henry's supervision and Scott's guidance. Logan had bought her a puppy and Rogue and Remy got her a horse, which Rogue took the time to help her train and ride. As the days passed Jubilee became more jealous, it was beginning to make her bitter. So much that Sean and Logan pulled her into his office for a little talk.
"Alright, Jube, spill it. What's wrong?" Logan asked, leaning against a book case.
"Nothing!, Jeeze, why can't you just leave me alone?"
"Because, since we found out that Serina is Logan's daughter, you've been becoming more distant. Why?" Sean stated.
"Yeah, well, it was a shock." She replied sarcastically.
"Are you jealous?" Xavier asked, bluntly.
"No. It's just that everyone caters to her. It's beginning to annoy me." She said.
"I don't care for you any less because of her, Jube. You're still special to me." Logan informed her, understanding her feelings.
"It's not the same." She said, leaving the room.
Sean contacted Serina and let her know about Jubilee, so Serina made a point to catch up with her. "Sean said that you needed to talk to me. What's up?"
"I didn't tell him that." She said, speeding up her steps.
"I'm not going to steal him away from you, you know." Serina informed her as she stopped walking.
"What do you mean?" Jubilee stalked back to her.
"I mean that I am his biological daughter, but you've been his daughter, in a sense, for a long time. You know more about him than me, spent more time with him, even celebrated holidays with him. I've only known him for six months, the last one as his daughter." Serina sat down on the grass, "I spent 21 years hating him for not coming for me and now he's dropped in to my life. He's all I have, where he has you. I should be jealous, and I am, but I care for you too. I have no siblings," She lied, "that I know of, but I could have you as one. You seem to not want that, and I can understand, but I can not change who my parent is or who I am. Haven't you ever wanted a sister, or a brother?"
"I have that here, lots of them, but you're different. You are his daughter, I don't remember my parents. He's all I have now that's even close to a parent." Jubilee said, siting beside her.
"That's not entirely true, Xavier acts like everyone's parent." Said, almost grudgingly.
"True." Jubilee laughed. "But he's not like Logan."
"No. I don't think there's anyone like Logan." Serina laughed with her.
"You are."
"In some ways, but I'm mostly like my mother, and I never knew her."
"I know how you feel. I wish I knew my parents." She said, sadly.
"Your relationship with Logan won't change unless you make it change. He's been real worried about you lately." Serina informed her. "Between the two of us, I doubt he's been able to sleep at night." She said as Logan approached them.
"How are my girls doin'" He asked, sitting down with them.
"Better." Jubilee replied.
"Yeah, or at least getting there." Serina stated.
"Well," He began, "We have a mission to do, so we're leaving tonight." He turned to Serina, " You gonna be alright here alone?"
"Sure, I'll probably soak in a tub with a good book to read, throw a big 'my parents aren't home' party and thrash the place." She joked.
'I'll stay with her, you guys never need me anyway. It'll give us time to catch up." Jubilee smiled.
"Great," He said, standing up, "I'll tell Scott."
"See ya," Serina said as he walked away. "Well, you wanna go for a ride?"
"Yeah!" Jubilee said excitedly.
They rode for several hours, talking. They returned just before dinner. Jean greeted them at the door. "Go and wash up, dinners ready and waiting." She stated, shaking her head.
"Yes, mother." They said in unison, scurrying off like children.
Jubilee watched them leave, waving good bye. Xavier said that they'd be back, with luck, tomorrow evening. She was almost glad that they were going. She waited until they were gone to do the dishes. Serina sat on the back porch enjoying the night breeze. When Jubilee was finished, she joined her bringing two glasses of soda. "It's a beautiful sunset." Jubilee stated, sitting beside her
Serina sighed, "Described it for me." She asked
Jubilee swallowed hard. Some how she had forgotten Serina's blindness. "It has varied shades of purple, pinks, yellows and orange. The sky is shades of blue, grey and has some white cotton like clouds, and oh, I'm sorry Serina, I forgot." She whined, catching what she had said.
"I'm glad, actually, it's what I've been trying to accomplish. Other than the X-men, and my doctor, I don't want anyone to know that I'm blind." She replied, "Don't give it another thought. Say, you wanna go and get some ice cream? I know a great place for a banana split."
"How?" Jubilee asked, thinking it sounded good.
"Can you drive?" Serina asked, knowing she had a permit.
"Yeah."
"Then get my purse out of my room, we'll take my car."
"cool!" Jubilee said, bounding for Serina's room. I guess you could say that Rogue and Serina had the coolest cars out of the X-men. Rogue's was a convertible, two door with a back seat. Serina's was a '64 Corvette convertible, customized, Jubilee was in heaven.
They drove around for a long while, enjoying the night, stopped for ice cream, then went to a park. "Hey, Jube, how would you like to take your driving test in my car?" Serina asked, seeing that she handled it very well.
"Really? Can I?" She replied excitedly.
"If you want. You drive her well enough, but it means you have to practice with her which means shell get dirty. Think it would be fair if I also let you wash her if she does?"
"Wow, yeah. I'll take real good care of her, I promise." Jubilee agreed.
"You have to have an adult with you when you drive, and you can't leave the grounds with out letting me know first. When you get your license. I let you use her, deal?"
"Deal."
"Let's head back, it's getting late." Serina replied, getting back into her car. "There's a car lot a few blocks from here, let's go look on our way home."
They stopped there so Jubilee could get a good look at a car. Someone was working late that night, and Jubilee had seem to find her dream car. The guy came out to see if they needed any help. "You stay here and look, I need to use the phone." Serina said, having the man lead her to his desk. "How much is it?" she asked, once they were inside, acting like she was on the phone.
"It's 8,995 Ma'am." He replied.
"And your name?"
"John, Ma'am."
"My name's Serina, and I'm interested in purchasing it. Here's my credit card, my license and the information you need. I don't want her to know, so can you have it delivered tomorrow say around 8pm?"
"Sure." He said, getting the approval from her credit company. "Just sign here." he said, placing the paper in front of her. She signed it without letting him know she was blind. "Thank you, you've made my day." He smiled.
"Thank you, you help make her dream come true." She said, placing her copy of the contract in her purse. They walked back out like nothing happened. "Come on, Jube, we need to get back, Dad will be calling to check on us soon. Thanks again." Serina said, getting into her car. "Bye", they said as they pulled away.
They pulled in to the mansion to see the lights were all out. "Something's wrong." Jubilee stated, "I left two lights on and they're out."

"Park the car, I'm going in the back." Serina said, getting out of the car.
"But you can't!" Jubilee objected, "You can't see them."
"You forget, I'm still a telapath, I'll improvise." she disappeared.
She teleported herself to just inside the door, hearing someone rustling papers in Xavier's office. She felt for the alarm, it had been turned off. She was grabbed from behind.
"Well, well, well, look what I found." A male voice replied, "Just de person we were looking for." He drawled.
"Hey, Leme go." She yelled. She then, telepathically, told Jubilee to get the police. "What do you want?"
"Not'ing from you, that is till you seen my face." He stated, jerking her into the office. "D'ere's gonna be a fire here, unfortunatly, you gonna be caught in it at X-man's desk."
"Why?" She asked, trying to get as much information as she could.
"'Cuz of a t'ieve, dat's why. LeBeau is gonna regret de day he cross de assassins." He said, tying her to a chair. She could hear liquid hit the floor as she began to feel blows from a fist hit her face. The last thing she heard was the striking of a match, then a night owl. She had managed to teleport herself outside. In the distance she could hear sirens approach.
Jubilee tried her best to wake Serina, but couldn't. They were both taken to the hospital where she received the word on the damages. She and Serina were sent home that night, she felt safer knowing that the X-men were on his way home. She slept in Serina's room with her, scared to be alone.
She awoke the next morning to a banging noise down stairs. She dressed fast and rushed to see what was going on. She came around the corner to see Serina attempting to clean Xavier's burned office. She had already cleaned the debree out of the hall. "What are you doing?' Jubilee asked, working her way toward her.
"Trying to straighten up before...." She was interrupted.
"Before what?" Scott asked, arriving with Storm and Rogue.
"Before you got here." Serina said, trying to smile. Her back to them and her face was still swollen from last nights attack. "Hi." She said in a 'I'm caught' voice as Bobby, Logan and Remy walked in.
"You said she was gonna party, but isn't dis a bit much?" Remy said jokingly.
Serina spun on him, facing them for the first time. "It's not funny, T'ieve. It was your friends who paid us the visit!" She snapped.
"My God, you didn't say you were hurt." Rogue stated, shocked by her battered face.
"Cause I'm not. It's just an illusion." She growled, flying out the window.
"Maybe you should tell us what happened." Scott said to Jubilee, Watching Logan's anger rise.
"From what Serina said, they claimed to be assassins. They pointed out Gambit and tried to make it look as if she caused the fire. She told you the rest, except for the fact that one of them had been here before. Her attacker from a month ago, you know, the one who blinded her?" Jubilee explained, seeing Scott cringe at the reminder. "Any way, they said she saw him and so he wanted her dead, I don't think they know she's a mutant."
"The camera didn't even get a good look at him," Storm stated, remembering the tapes. "Maybe someone should talk with her, get a description." She suggested, seeing Gambit leave the room.
Rogue wasn't far behind him. She had a feeling that this upset him. "Remy?" She said, trying to catch up to his quick strides.
He stopped, "What Chere."
"What's going on?" She asked, concerned at the reaction.
"Nothing, Rogue," He said, looking at a picture in his wallet, "Nothing for you to worry about." He began his speeded pace. She stood there, watching him approach Serina, then turned to go and find out what was going on inside.
She could hear footsteps behind her, they stopped just short of her attack range. "Renia?" He said, for the first time in years.
"You're learning Remy." She said, not turning to face him.
"You are her, aren't you?"
"Who, Remy?" She asked, even though she knew what he referred to. She wanted to hear him say it.
"Renia '88. I've kept the picture to remember you by. I saved you when they stole your purse."
"You figure it out. Obviously you were able to forget her. What makes you think of her now?" She asked, curious as to his answer.
"Your face. You looked at me with wild eyes, something you did when I first met you. We both had strange eyes, something we talked a lot about." His voice sounded as it did in '88, it sent chills down her spine.
"Well, it doesn't much matter whether I am or not, does it. You forgot about her long ago, so drop it." She said, trying to show no emotion in her voice, it would give her away.
He moved to stand closely behind her, she hadn't changed the fragrance of her hair. "No, I just gave up on ever seeing her again. I never replaced her in my heart."
"Yes you did, Rogue stole your heart, you told me that not long after I arrived. You found someone to fill her shoes." She stated, his closeness driving her crazy.
"And you replaced me with Steve, touche' my sweet. But at least I wasn't getting married a few years later and I didn't lie about where I'd be." He stated, his senses going wild.
She blew, whirling on him, "I didn't lie, I got stuck in Switzerland. The marriage was pre- arranged and he's dead! So go screw yourself, Remy, it's the one person you know for sure you love!" She stormed off, leaving him to stand alone.
"No Chere, you are wrong there. I love two very head strong, beautiful women, but only one sends me to a wild confusion." He said softly to her retreating form.

She stormed through the mansion, everyone stepped out of her way. All that is except Scott "Can I speak with you?"
"Not now, Cyke." She said, her brogue more apparent now.
"Now." He replied, not giving her much of a choice. He took her by the arm and led her to the war room. "What is going on?" He asked once they were alone.
"Nothing. I feel that I let you down, it pisses me off." She said, trying to calm herself. "I didn'na need the jokes. I was trying to clean it up 'afore you got back. That is all. Now if you'll excuse me, I have things to do." She started to leave, but strong arms sat her down in a chair. She winced at the touch. "What?" She asked, irritated.
"I want a description of the man who attacked you." He replied.
"Yeah, right," She laughed sarcastically, "I'm blind Xavier, don' you remember? I couldn'na see him!" She began to get outraged.
He was using all his patients with her. "The one who blinded you, you saw his face, or at least he thinks you did. Does he know you are blind?"
"I duenna know! I duen remember! I caenna!" She ran from the room, tripping over Warren as she ran. She ran out side to Remy's motor cycle, Using her telekinetic powers to start it and drive it. She went to where she had heard what sounded to be a good time. She pulled in to Harry's bar and went in for a drink.
She was there for hours before Rogue found her. Rogue quietly slid into the booth. "I'm not interested." Serina replied, not bothering to lift her head. She was resting her head next to a half empty beer glass. Remy stepped up to the bar.
"How long she been like dis?" He asked the bartender.
"The past hour or so. I ain't ever see a woman put away so much. She cleared the rif-raf from here in the first two hours and has been there ever since." Harry told him, pouring a cup of strong coffee for him to give her. "I knew by her badge to call you, figured you knew her since your bike was here an' you weren't."
"Thanks Harry. We'll take care of her." Remy said, taking the coffee to the table.
"Duen' ya get tha hint, I'm not in tha mood for company." She growled, this time lifting her head.
"Drink this." He said, sliding in beside her and placing her hands around the cup.
She drew her hands back, as if she'd been burned. Sliding as far away from him as possible. "I didnnae damage it, it's outside." She said in a whisper.
"We know, Renia." He replied, putting the cup in her hands again.
She grabbed the hair by her ears, pulling it in to clinched fists. "Duenna call me that! You duenna deserve it!" She leaned her head against the wall.
"Serina, please drink the coffee, it'll make you feel better." Rogue finally said, sliding down to sit in front of her.
"Oh great, my best friend and one of my former beaus. Just what I need after a day of pure hell." She laughed, "Go away. I wanna to be alone, something I don' get often." Pushing the cup away to lay her head back down. "How'd you find me anyway?"
"We got a call. Come on Chere', drink." Remy urged, trying to get her to sit up.
"A drink.... that sounds good, I'll take a scotch and soda." She said raising up enough for Remy to get a good hold on her. He lifted her easily, throwing her over his shoulder and Harry handed Rogue a bag with two cups of strong coffee in them as they walked out.
"Chere, take de bike. I'm gonna to sober her up. Logan will have a fit if she come back like dis. Tell dem we found her and dat she's with me. She'll be safe." Remy said, trading the keys for hers and the coffee.
"You sure, Remy?" She asked as he belted her in.
"Yes, now go so they call de search off. I'll see you later." He said, speeding off.
He took her to a secluded spot near the lake. He tried once more to get her to drink the coffee. "No!" She screamed, trying to get away from him.
"Fine then. We do it de hard way." He said, throwing her in to the icy cold water. "There. That should sober you up." He said, just before seeing her go under and not come up.
"Shit." he said jumping in after her. He searched around where he last saw her, but couldn't see her. Moments later, he felt her. That is, he felt her pull him under. When he came up, she was gone. "Damn!" He muttered, scanning the bank.
"Looking for me, Rrrremmmmmy?" She said from behind him. He turned to face her and she threw her arms around his neck. "Next time you wanna swim, remember to remove your uniform. Scott's gonna be pissed." She said, her arms were now bare. She entangled her hands in his hair and kissed him deeply. "Mine are on the bank." She swam away from him.
"Damn!" He muttered as he made his way to the bank, "She play with fire.... Damn!" He got out and built a fire, hanging his clothes with hers then went back in after her. The sun was in a spot where it shined on a group of rocks in the middle of the lake through the trees. As he swam toward them, he could see her laying on one. "Shit!" He said, swimming faster, seeing a boat not more than 10 yards away from her. "Renia! De boat!" He hollered at her as he swam. He saw her roll in to the water but couldn't see where she went. He felt her swim beneath him. He turned around to fallow her, she was back at the cove. "Don' do that, you don' know what you're doing." He said, coming up behind her.
"Do what, Rrrremy?" She asked, throwing her arms around his neck once again, this time she pressed her body hard against him.
"Ah hell!" He said, putting his around her and kissing her. She passed out from all the alcohol she had drank, leaving him teased. He laid her on the bank near the fire, dressing her when her clothes dried. He watched her sleep til long after sunset, she had fallen into a deep slumber. He quietly slipped away, careful not to wake her.

He contacted Jean, "She's fine. She fell asleep. I don't want to disturb her. She said she needs some time, She wants to stay here and I don't want her to be alone. I'll bring her home tomorrow morning." He half lied.
"Rogue said she was pretty upset and had been drinking, is this true?"
"Yeah, but she's sober now. I'll fill you in when we get back." Gambit stated, turning his communicator off. He grabbed the blankets from Rogue's trunk, thankful that she hadn't unloaded them since their last camping trip. He walked back to find her huddled near the fire, shivering. "Here, Cher', wrap dis around you." he said, putting a blanket around her shoulders.
"Rrreemmyy?" She asked chattering as he sat down beside her.
"Yes?" He answered, pulling her into his arms.
She took a deep breath trying to control the chattering. "Where are we?" She asked, trying to shift but found it extemely painful. "Ow, mmm. Goddess, what did I do?" She stated, her legs shooting sharp pains.
"Slowly, Renia, we're in a cove near the lake and we need to find cover before it gets too late." He said, realizing that the nap on the rocky ground was hard on her legs. "I saw a cave not to far away, will you be alright until I get back?"
"Sure, but why don't we just go home?"
"You said you needed time, I'm giving that to you." He said, kissing the top of her head before he left.
The cave was shallow, but well hidden from view and elements. It was also empty. He hauled some wood from just outside the entrance and started a fire before he went to get her. "Ok, let's go." He whispered, "I have it all set up." He kneeled beside her. She had fallen asleep sitting up. Gentile, he lifted her into his arms, she began to stir. "Shhh, It's only me." He whispered when she began to panic. She relaxed at the sound of his voice, nussling his neck.
He carried her in and set her on the blankets near the fire. He then realized that they hadn't eaten. She was drinking on an empty stomach, he just knew she was going to be sick. "I'll be back in a little while, I'm gonna get us something to eat." He said, she didn't answer. He figured that she was asleep, but she wasn't.
He drove back to Harry's and grabbed some hamburgers, fries, soda, and milk. He returned with about six bags of food. He had only been gone a half hour, but in that time she had straightened the place up. She hung the blanket he had put around her at the entrance of the cave. It stayed there on some branches, while she swept the floor with a leaved branch. He came in and set down the load if food, "What are you doing?" He asked, wondering what got into her.
"I don't know, cleaning I guess. You were gone and I got bored." She said, walking awkwardly toward the fire.
"Whoa," He said, catching her before she walked into the blaze.
"I still can't figure out what I did to my legs," She said innocently, not remembering what she had done "They're sore and I have no control over them."
He sat her down beside him, "They'll get better. You hungry?" He asked, handing her a burger.
"Does this always happen when someone gets drunk?" She asked as he took a drink of his soda. "I'm sorry, Remy. I guess I pushed it too far."
"Why did you do it, Chere'." He asked, taking a bite of his burger.
"A lot of reasons. It was easy for me to be here, as long as you didn't remember me, I could handle you and Rogue. Being attacked by the assassins didn't do much for me either, first blinding me then trying to kill me. And finally, Scott's pushing me to give him information only moments after talking with you, being forced to stay there didn't help. Now this? Maybe it would be better if I just disappeared, then things might go back to normal." She said, no longer hungry. She stood and walked out before he could say a word.
He set down his food and rushed down to the lake to the sound of a splash. She was sitting in plain sight, the moon light playing on her hair. He could see his breath, so he knew they were going to be sick if they stayed out there long. He watched her undress and slip in to the icy water. "Get outta there, Chere', you'll catch your death." He hollered.
"What does it matter, I've been told that this is where I belong ." She yelled back, swimming a little farther out.
"I promised them that you would be safe, now behave like the adult you are and come out of there." He replied, getting closer to the edge.
"No. I belong here, besides, it's better than being with you!" She challenged, treading water.
"Don' make me come after you, girl." He threatened, taking his shoes off.
"Well you got one part right, T'ieve,'you gonna have to come after me', I am not coming out for you to feel sorry for me. I have feelings too, though most don' think so." She replied, hearing him hit the water. "You don' scare me, Remy, you changed that long ago. I'm where the rest who couldn't have say I belong," He popped up in front of her, quiet as to not disturb her speech, "in ice, to match my heart." She paused trying to hear him, "Remy? did you hear me? You ruined me for the others years ago. Steve was trying to find a way out," He could hear the tears that he didn't see, "He said he'd rather marry a block of ice, it had more warmth than I." He saw her head lower, now able to hear her cry, "All I wanted was to go back to you, to be with you. My family wouldn't allow it. They changed my schools when they found out about you. They said you weren't good enough for their precious. No other will due, if not you, then no one." She said, moving toward the rocks.
He fallowed her quietly, hoping to hear more. She sat on a rock that was submerge. "I hate you." She said quietly. "You hear me Remy? I hate you!" She yelled through the tears.
"I heard you, Renia." He answered softly, placing his hands on her knees. "I heard it all." He moved closer, seeing her raise her fists. She hit him on the chest as she cried harder, he just folded her in his arms, feeling her pain.
He sat there, just holding her as she cried. When she finally slowed to a sob, he spoke. "Renia, why don' we go where it's warm. We can talk there."
She pulled away, "There's nothing more to talk about." She wiped her eyes and swam for shore, saying to herself, 'After tonight I'll never be warm again.'
They walked the cave in silence, she never raised her head. He used a blanket to dry her off, his clothes damp from throwing them on when he got out. He was drying her legs when he noticed several bruises on her left leg. "How did you get these bruises?" He asked, inspecting them closely.
"It happened when I was trying to straighten up earlier at the mansion." She said softly, "I hit my leg."
"I went to New York to find you. I was crushed when I didn' find you. No one would tell me where you were. I knew I didn' belong wit' de t'ieve's so I ended up here. You never said where you were from, so I had a disadvantage." He said, helping her dress.
"Your friends had my purse, my license was there. It had my home address." She stated.
"I never found it. I picked up de picture before I helped you run." He replied, sadly.
She kneeled in front of him, "Why did you give up? You said you'd seen me before, why didn't you recognize me? Especially when they took my contacts."
"I was afraid, I guess. I found Rogue and, even though I can' do what I dream of with her, I have strong feelings for her. Like I have for you."
She put her hands gentile on his face, slowly memorizing it with her finger tips. She leaned foreward and kissed him. "Maybe it'll happen, if you really want it to." She said softly, kissing him again. "After tonight we have to go back to what we were, but tonight, we have a lot of catching up to do. So much has happened to the two of us that we need to get to know each other all over again, as friends." She said, sitting back. They spent the rest of the night eating and talking, making their bond of friendship strong.
They headed back around 6 a.m., everyone was still asleep. Everyone that is, except Scott. "Made it back, I see." he stated, irritably.
"Ah,... yeah. I told JEAN we would." Remy turn to Serina, "Go on to bed, Jean will want to talk to you later."
"Alright, good night," She said, kissing them both on the cheek innocently.
She could hear Remy and Scott talk as she walked. "I got the description you wanted," At this, she stopped to listen. He was there, in the war room, he had to be. She never said anything to him. She listen as he described, in detail, who she saw. The strangest thing is that he was right! When the discussion changed, she went off to bed.
Later that day....
"Jean wants to see you in the war room." Scott told Serina, offering his arm.
"No thank you." She replied cold but politely, teleporting to the room. "Are we alone?"
"Yes. I want apologize for Scott yesterday. When he heard that you had seen your attackers face, he had to know." Jean explained from beside her.
"I won't be intimidated, Jean. All it gets is me angry. Remy told Scott his description. What else is there?" She asked.
"I wanted to tell you about the drinking rule." She replied, seeing her expression change from a sarcastic to a harsh ridged one. " I will not have you coming in so drunk that I get a call from the bartender to come get you." She stated, sounding like a mother.
"I had no intension of coming back. At least not that drunk. You sent out the search party, I didn't ask you to. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have studying to do before Monday." She stated flatly.
"Not yet." She replied, his hand on her arm. I need you to play as bait to trap. I want to catch this assassin before he kills you."
"What do you want me to do?" She asked, interested in the mission.
"I'm sending you and Gambit to the Mardi Grais festival in New Orleans. I want you to be as public as possible." She informed her, seeing her expression brighten.
She smiled deviously, "When do we leave?"

They were scheduled on a 4:30 flight out of New York. Serina called the car lot to tell them to ask for Jubilee, "She can sign in my absence." She told him. Rogue saw them off as Remy led Serina by the hand. They had first class seats, coach was filled. Serina had taken care of the reservations, Scott's way of including her, made her the secretary in her blindness to keep her active.
Serina dosed on the flight, Remy leaned her against his shoulder to cushion her head. The Stewardess' voice woke her as the came in for a landing. "Come on, Renia, there's a cab." Remy told her as he pulled her behind him.
"But Remy, my love, I got us a rental car." She replied, her arm hurting from being pulled through the crowd.
He stopped abruptly, "You what?" He asked. She held up the keys, making them jingle. "Well, then lets go." He said in a astonished voice. She had made all the arrangement. They were staying in one of the finest hotels over looking the parade route. There was only one room so they had to share, Remy didn't mind. how many missions would he get for a week long party, shacked up with a pretty woman?
The Marty Grais didn't start officially for a day, but that didn't stop some people. Their room had a balcony, something Remy could count on finding Serina on if she wasn't in the room.
They went out to eat most of their meals, taking breakfast only in their room. She had no problem playing the girlfriend to Remy, she found that if pervoked, she can be extemely jealous.
On a few occasions she heard Remy flirting with the ladies, she quickly showed how she could react by locking him out of their room. One evening, while he was away from their table, she showed just how easily she could attract another mans affections. He came bact to see a good looking young man kissing her hand. He then watched her leave the table to dance to a slow song with him. Moments after she began to dance, she turned seductive, driving him up the wall. He found himself hurling the man across the room and dragging her out of the club. "Why Cher? Why did you do dis to me?" He asked as they drove back to the hotel.
"Why are you aloud to?" She asked him back.
"I'm not wanted dead, Cher'." He replied, turning the corner.
"You are in my book." She said under her breath.
"I'm sure I am, Petite', I'm sure I am." He chuckled at her, her anger rising. He pulled as close as he could to the hotel, Swarms of people blocked the streets. "Look like we walk from here." Remy replied, getting out of the car. He locked his door, walking around to help her out. With the car locked they began their long trek to the hotel. People partied all along the streets, girls flung themselves at Remy and men at Serina. Somewhere near a block away from the hotel they were separated.
"Remy!!!!" He heard her scream as two men carried her off into the crowded street. He pushed his way through the crowd, keeping her in his sight. They were tossing her into the air and from person to person. It was then that he was stopped by a group of women.
"You wantin' de girl back? You know where to find 'er. Tomorrow night, midnight." She drawled, "You done us wrong, LeBeau, now you gonna pay." She dropped a smoke bomb and was gone.
Gambit stood there for a long time before going in to report to Scott. He lied, informing him that they hadn't taken the bate yet, and Renia was asleep. He then got into the car and drove to the meeting place. 'If dey don' know she's a mutant, she may be able to get away.' If she did, he'd be there waiting.
Somewhere around 3 a.m. he heard the barking of orders and the rustle of branches from the swamp land. He got out of the car and went in the direction of the swamp, figuring it to be Renia.
He heard the heavy breathing of someone near by and some not to far behind near some lanterns. "Renia." He whispered loudly, hearing the noise stop suddenly as if listening. "Renia, dis way Chere." He said, hearing the movement come closer to him.
He could see her now. He could also see the assassins not to far behind her. He reached out and grabbed her, pulling her into the bushes. She attacked him, knocking him back over a downed tree. "Don't touch me!" She screeched, drawing the assassin's attention.
He looked up to see Bella Donna standing over him, hearing Serina get caught by two of her assassins. "Hello, Belle. Long time no see." He said, not too enthused.
"You gettin sloppy, Remy." She said, turning to her underlings, "Take them inside." Walking toward assassin headquarters.
Once inside, Bella Donna made a point to make him beg. "When you start going to humans for attention, Remy? She' not special, but she' a good fighter. Too bad she' a blind girl, you do it?" She asked in a purr.
"You know who did it, Belle." He said smugly, " Now that you got me, let her go. She's not in dis." He replied, fidgeting with the restraints.
"No. I t'ink I let you watch us kill her." She said, motioning them to bring her in.
They brought her in, throwing her against Remy. She reached up to feel his face. He felt a tingle, then she stood to face them."I have had about enough of this." She announced, throwing a chair the way she had come in. She charged it just before she released it. It exploded not too far from Belle, the flash giving her time to grab Gambit and run toward the door. She stopped in front of Belle, "Didn't know I could do that, did you." She said in a smart-ass voice, "The next you see this face will mean your death, remember it well." She growled, sounding more animal than human. Then teleporting them out of her reach.
She did her best to get him out of the restraints, "I didn' know you could absorb." He stated, getting one hand free.
"There's a lot you don' know about me Remy. But I only found it out at the cave." She said honestly, getting into the car. "I think it'll be a while before they tangle with me again." She smiled as he drove back to the hotel.
"I t'ink you just made a serous enemy." He replied.
"So far there's not much I can't handle"
"Do not get over confident, Cher', some one may get you in de end." He advised, pulling in front of the hotel.
They left two days later, after reporting to Scott that it had been dealt with. They spent those days shopping and talking. Remy could feel the difference in her. She seemed distant and cold since the time at the lake, something he would have to talk to her about later.
