Babylon 5 is the story of the last station of the Babylon project. As the season one narration says, "a place were humans and aliens can work out their differences peacefully." It is located in neutral territory, in orbit around the planet Epsilon III. Located on the planet is what was dubbed "The Great Machine" which contains vast stores of information, and has helped the Babylon 5 station, most recently in providing the neccessary power for the station to transmit its "Voice of the Resistance" to all Earth colonies. From mid-way through the third year of the B5 story to the end of the fourth year, B5 broke away from Earth, which was being run in a dictaorial manner. After the conclusion of the Shadow War, Captain John Sheridan began a move against the Earth government and won. However, in the face of a court-martial, he resigned his Earthforce commission and is now the president of the newly formed Interstellar Alliance.

Unlike most TV programs, B5 was form the outset written to last five years at the maximum. The creator of the series, J. Michael Straczynski has started writing the series, knwoing its beginning and end before it ever went to air. There are plans for made-for-TV movies whihc will occur before, after and during the main story arc, which finishes at the end of the forth-coming fifth season, set to air in January 1998. The show has always been dogged by critics, saying each year it would be cancelled. Mr Straczynski got back at his doubters at the end of the fourth season by posting a card at the end of fourth season finale:

"Dedicated to all the people who predicted that the Babylon Project would fail in its mission. Faith manages."

In comment to this, Mr. Straczynski had this to say on the page for the episode "Deconstrucion of Falling Stars" ont he Lurker's Guide to Babylon 5 (the URL for the Guide can be found below). It is a very good quote and is presented below:

"A few people have interpreted the final card as "meanspirited" (when it's on one level a reaction *to* five years of constant carping and meanspiritedness from lots of sectors, from the nets to the press and elsewhere)...but what it is, a statement of hope. That whenever you try something different, there are going to be naysayers, and people who say it can't be done, and certainly can't be done by *you*. It ain't just B5, it's any dream out there. And in the end, they are wrong. Faith manages. That's the message of the card. That, and the truth that in 10 years the naysayers will be forgotten, and made irrelevant...but the show, the *show*...goes on. And will be around long after they and I have gone to dust. And all people will know when they see that card, 50 years from now, was that some jerks said it couldn't be done, and they were wrong, because they are *always* wrong. If you have the dream, the ability and the passion, you can bring your dreams to life despite overwhelming opposition. That's the message. But for those on the other side, they will never see anything other than meanspiritedness because that's all they can *ever* see...because that's all they can bring to the table. There's an old saying about books, which I'll rephrase to include B5: Babylon 5 is like a book, and a book is like a mirror: if an ass peers in, you can't exactly expect an apostle to peer out."

But as the character of Delenn states in the second last episode of Season 4, "Rising Star.": "Babylon 5... endures..."

DIRECTING BABYLON 5

Both John Copeland and series producer J. Michael Straczynski are pulling even more duties at the sets of Babylon 5, as each are revving up to direct their first B5 episodes. John Copeland is scheduled to direct episode 420 of this season, and J. Michael Straczynski will direct the season finale.

There is some misunderstanding regarding the status of the season finale of season 4. While it is called production #422, this episode will actually air at the conclusion of the B5 series, whether there will be a fifth year or not. For Instance: If there is no season 5.. the airing order will be: 419,420,421,422. However, if there IS a season 5, the order will be: 419,420,421,501,502,503…422.
