For those who are new to the X-Files, the show is about two FBI agents, Fox Mulder, and Dana Scully. Mulder (for 4 years now) has been investigating the so-called X-Files, cases which defy normal explanation. Dana Scully was assigned to observe the work and make reports on its validity. Mulder, who maintains that as a young boy he witnessed his sister's abduction by aliens, is the believer, steadfast in his determinartion that there exists an entire world which simply cannot be explained by rational thought, a world rife with alien beings, government conspirators, and human anomalies. Scully, a medical doctor by training, remains the rock solid skeptic, equally determined to prove that science can explain even that which appears to be without explanation. Nothing, not even her own possible alien abduction, has shaken the foundations of her faith.
The two were at first an unlikely pair. Mulder is a former FBI fast-tracker whose preoccupation with things paranormal stalled his meteoric rise through the agency. Scully, on the other hand, as a medical doctor, trained to draw conclusions based on fact. Still, as their professional relationship progresses, even the skeptical doctor has had more than one experience that defies scientific explanation.
As the pair works to solve these unexplained cases, Mulder's strong belief in the forces of the unknown continues to challenge Scully's rational mind. Their relationship grows more complex with each case and slowly emerges as a heady mix of professional competitiveness, witty repartee and a personal intimacy due to the intensity of their job and the close proximity in which they work.
There is a contrinuing storyline of a large UFO conspiracy involving the governement. One of the heads of this conspiracy is the "Cigarrette Smoking Man", also known as Cancer Man. Besides UFO's, Mulder & Scully investigate other strange cases across America.
