ENGLISH B (HL / SL)

 

Program Description

 

The program is designed to systematically develop the pupil's language skills through intensive training in speaking, listening, reading and writing. The goal is that the pupils shall gain a relatively advanced social, academic and cultural competence in the subject in order to express themselves dearly in various tasks and situations, both spoken and written.

 

The program activities are based on explorations of the following three themes:

 

Groups

Leisure

Change

 

The methods of instruction include:

 

Text-Handling and Comprehension:

Various exercises in connection with different text types.

 

Written production:

Formal and freer writing assignments of varying lengths.

 

Oral Communication:

Individual and group activities, including spontaneous or prepared speeches, discussions, dialogues and debates.

 

Grammatical Structures:

Throughout the course appropiate study of grammatical structures will be included.

 

Texts and Study Materials

 

In order to represent and handle the program's themes, class textbooks and workbooks, as well as literary works, newspapers and other authentic materials will be used.

 

Evaluation

 

The evaluation of pupils consists of three parts:

Text – Handling                                                                                  40 %

Written production (an essay)                                                          30 %

Oral Assessment                                                                                30 %

 

In the oral component at least three activities (individual and group) must be recorded in the second year.
