Martha MacIssac - Age 13 Charlottetown, PE

Martha MacIsaac plays Emily in the new CBC television production of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Emily of New Moon. Martha landed the leading role when her popular series of commercials for PEI tourism caught the attention of the show’s producers, Salter Street and Cinar. The producers were impressed enough that they shot an entire second season before the first episode even aired!

Salter Street Films representative Linda Jackson speaks very highly of the young actress. "We were so happy to get her. She’s great; when you see her crying, that’s real. She can turn it on just like that." When asked how she prepared for the death scenes of her on-screen father, Martha replies, "I just pretend."

Martha has wanted to be an actor since she was four. That was the year she got her first acting job, impersonating Elvis Presley at a local senior citizen’s home. At the age of six, she was on stage, playing one of the Avonlea children in a production of Anne of Green Gables. Since then, she has competed in many Island music festivals and in 1995 she won Best Performer in the provincial festival. She also played the part of Tiny Tim in the Charlottetown Confederation Centre’s annual production of A Christmas Carol.

Her Emily co-star Sheila McCarthy says, "Martha is one of those rare and natural talents. She is unafraid of the camera, unafraid of the emotions. She does not complicate things. I’m learning from her. I also see a purity in her. She’s a very confident little girl."
