Lucy Maud Montgomery is once again responsible for putting Prince Edward Island front and centre in the hearts and minds of television viewers. Emily of New MoonTM, a new series based on the books by Montgomery, Canada's critically acclaimed author of Anne of Green GablesTM, is in the process of being filmed on PEI. CINAR and Salter Street Films have teamed up to produce the new series in association with WIC Entertainment.
Emily of New MoonTM is the haunting tale of a free-spirited girl, with a passion to write and live life to its fullest, whose vivid imagination and romantic nature come into conflict with her strict but loving adoptive family. It is a story of passion, honesty and breathtaking beauty set against the sweeping coastal landscape of Prince Edward Island.
The one-hour series remains true to the spirit of the Emily books and is shot in the authentic setting of Prince Edward Island, where Lucy Maud Montgomery herself grew up. The primary location is Cabot Beach Provincial Park, Malpeque, which serves as an exterior production set for the series and eventually as a tourist attraction. Almost all of Slemon Park's Hangar #3 is being used for administrative offices, an indoor sound stage and for building sets and designs. Until recently, the main emphasis of Slemon Park has been aerospace and training, but the size of the hangars makes it an ideal location for the sound stage of the new television series.
Prince Edward Island knew a good thing when they saw it and the provincial government invested $1.9 million into CINAR and Salter Street to be used in the financing of the Emily Village and the Emily of New MoonTM production. "This series provides the opportunity for PEI to cast itself in the lead role and as a result become a contender in the rapidly growing Atlantic Canada film industry," said Berni Wood, Film Commissioner for Prince Edward Island.
The production crew of approximately 125 is made up of employees from Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and Quebec. Martha MacIsaac, a 13 year-old from PEI, plays Emily. Emily at age five is played by another Islander, Sarah Briand. Emily's best friend, Ilse, is played by Jessica Pellerin from Little Pond, PEI.
The series began airing in January 1998 on CBC stations across Canada and will begin airing again in the fall on WIC stations across the country.
