1. Prologue

I trembled as my mom zipped up my coat and fitted the mittens onto my hands. Soon I would go through the most terrifying moments in my life. Mother then secured me underneath a pink hat, fully equipped with pictures of bunnies. She then grabbed my hand and walked me to the car.

It was the first day and a new experience for everyone who would be in my group. We walked inside the double glass doors at the entrance and walked down through a hallway. Up ahead I could see children parting with their parents, crying for their parents, and talking with their parents. As soon as we reached the door I clung to my mother’s leg like a leech, and wouldn’t let go whenever anyone tried to pull me off.

After a few minutes of my mom’s hassle, she peeled me off of her leg and set me down inside. My mother and the rest of the children’s parents left, which was when the teacher told us to pick a friend that we wanted to sit with.

I sat in my chair for a few minutes, watching as all the other kids in the class getting picked by their friends to sit next to them. Then a shy girl came up in front of me. She had long blonde hair, which was french braided. Holding out her hand to me, she grinned, “Want to be fwends?”

I nodded slowly and timidly, but I exclaimed in a loud voice “Sounds fun! My name is Riley!”

The girl took her hand in mine and shook it, all the while saying, “Me Mawissa! Want to sit with me?”

I was so happy that I had found a friend and nodded my head vigorously and dragged her over to a table with two boys. We both made a face at each other both thinking the same thing, ‘Why do we have to sit with BOYS!?’

Later on a few of the boys were starting to pick on me since I was extremely shy. They were saying how short I am, and how funny I looked.

I was on the verge of tears when Marissa came pelting to my rescue. By telling them I was no different from her, they took the hint. It seemed as if Marissa was one of the favored kids at my new kindergarten.

She gave me a hug and we swore to be best friends forever.
