Name might have been O'Sullivan

There is a story that John William and his brother arrived in a small vessel to evade pirates. Another story is that they were Royal Navy and jumped ship. The spot that they came ashore was named Sullivan's Cove.

It is said that he had lied about his name until his wedding day when he felt that had no choice but tell the truth.

In 1816 he helped unload 100 barrels of flour that the gov't had sent to New Carlisle aboard the Hibernia due to the poor harvest that year. However, he asked for money, 14 shillings, rather that flour since he had enough provisions.
He was married to Elizabeth FLOWERS* in 1810 in Shigawake, Gaspe, Bonaventure, Quebec.
