A Small Life

“I lead a small life.  Small but important”.  That’s a quote from one of my favourite films – ‘You’ve Got Mail’.  Doesn’t it make you start to think?  I mean, we all lead small lives really, even those who think they are better, richer, more powerful than the next person – it’s still just a small life.  I mean ‘really’ small when you think of where the majority of us will live out our existence compared with the infinite expanse of space.  We all exist on this small turbulent ball of solidified gas and liquid, just hanging around in space – quite literally suspended in time!  No strings attached.

What’s the point of it all?  There has to be more to ‘life’ than just ‘hanging around’.  Naturally we all like to think that our own existence has a purpose but when you take a look at the big picture, I’m talking infinite space here, could someone please tell me the point of our existence as a whole?  What are the reasons for keeping us here on this tiny little sphere with nobody else to play with?  Are we alone?  “Well, if we are then it seems a pretty big waste of space”.  Another quote from another film – ‘Contact’.  If scientists are right, then in a couple of Millennium every single living breathing thing will be obliterated because our little ‘orb’ will have come to the end of it’s existence.

So why bother inhabiting it in the first place?  Surely there must be some logical explanation and purpose for us to breathe the air we breathe and live the lives we do?  Why can’t scientists figure that one out?  It would save a lot of time and ‘space’ if they could – wouldn’t it?

For instance, let’s take a look at this small little spherical object we all call home.  How does it just ‘hang’ there and what stops it from spinning and whizzing through space, here there and everywhere?  OK – so you think you know the answer – Gravity?  Have you ever actually ‘touched’ gravity?  No, me neither.  It’s this amazing unknown force that somebody discovered centuries ago with the aid of another spherical object – an apple!  We all just go ahead and take his word for it that it’s gravity keeping us all together and making us stay put on this tiny weeny green and blue globe.  Explain this to me:-  if you can’t touch it, can’t see it, can’t feel it, can’t even sense it, then surely you are only observing or experiencing something that you believe to be real – for example ‘gravity’ – how can you honestly say it ‘is’ real?  You can’t – can you?!

It’s impossible to imagine the infinity of space.  Surely at some point the blackness must come to an end and you can open a door and step out into the light.  Infinity is just too vast to imagine.  Why can’t we touch ‘space’?  It’s not ‘out there’ it’s right here on our doorstep and we exist right in the middle of it but it’s still just out of reach!  Have you ever noticed that when you look at the horizon it seems to meet and touch the sky?  If you could just make it to that horizon would you be walking in the clouds or touching space?  Does space even exist – remember – you can’t feel it, can’t touch it, can’t really even sense it.  Do you see my point?  When you open your door and go outside tonight you are stepping into space.  Someone might even be looking back at you from ‘their’ space with exactly the same thoughts.  It’s said that you can open a window to your soul, so why not open a window into space and peer through to the other side.  I wonder what you would see…….
