Star-Spangled Snowflake
This design uses 2 sizes of thread. Size 80: shuttle only. Size 20: 2 shuttles wound CTM. Sample snowflake was worked in DMC tatting cotton size 80 in colors 666 and 798, size 20 Manuela in white and measures 3 inches point-to-point.
Stars:
Use size 80 thread and 1 shuttle:
R 5-5-5-5
* R 5+5-5-5
Repeat from * 3 more times, joining last R to first R. Finish ends. Make 6 stars, set aside. I made three stars in red and three in blue for a red-white-and-blue snowflake, but pastel stars could look like spring flowers (to go with the butterfly snowflake!
Snowflake:
Use size 20 thread, 2 shuttles wound CTM. Shuttle 1 should be fairly full, shuttle 2 needs about 2 yards:
Center:
Shuttle 1:
R 3-3-3-3+3-3+3-3. First join is to any free picot of a blue star, second join is to any free picot of a red star.
†Leave a space (mock picot)
S/R 3-3+3-3+3-3/3-3. First join is to next picot of red star from previous ring, next join is to any free picot of another blue star.
Repeat from † 3 more times, alternating colors of stars.
Leave a space (mock picot)
R 3-3+3/3-3+3-3+3. First join is to star from previous ring as before. First join with shuttle 2 is to second picot of first central ring. Final join is to picot before join on very first star: each star will be joined to 2 center rings by 2 adjacent picots.
