"Ya ready yet, Giles? I'm getting bored here I need some nice physical exertion to counter the boring booky bit!"

"Mmhh?" was Giles reply as he looked up from the book he was deeply engrosed in,
"Did you say something Buffy?"

"Duh, wakey wakey! Its training time. We've done books."

"Oh yes sorry. OK. I don't think I'll bother with padding today, you'd only start complaining about the extra time I wasted in putting it on. What did we decide today, was it hand to hand?"

Buffy nodded and the two started sparing. Giles threw his first punch which Buffy blocked with ease.

"Come on Giles, you're not putting your back into this!" Buffy mocked her watcher as he just managed to block her kick.

"Buffy, stop it. This is serious." He replied just managing to hide the smile that threatened to spead across his face.

"That wasn't a punch, hit me harder." she continued after once again easily stopping his attempts.

"Harder, Giles"

"Give me a break, Buffy. I'm not a teenager and dont have the stamina of one either!" he told her in mock irritation, once more trying to hide the amusment he found in her attempts to provoke him.

"Yeh, right, old man. You've never had a problem before in keeping up with me. Oh except when I do this!" Giles yelled in suprise As she swept the legs out from under her watcher, so that he landed flat on his back with her straddled on top of him.

Principal Snyder was patrolling the corridors in search of any stray pupils who had decided to stay on campus after school had finished for the day, he turned doen the corridor in which the libary was situated hoping to find Buffy and her delinquent friends hanging around as they were likely to do. He'd allready checked the computer room and found no one and was now itching for an expulsion, or at least threatening one.

As he passed the libary he heard thudding like people running into things, he had a feeling this was going to be his lucky day, as he went to open the libary door he heard the voices inside, he stopped wanting to hear what was said incase it gave him even more evidence for expulsion, not that he needed any more on the Buffy Summers.

"Harder, Giles"

"Give me a break, Buffy. I'm not a teenager and don't have the stamina of one either!"

"Yeh, right, old man. You've never had a problem before in keeping up with me. Oh except when I do this!"

"Buffy!"

Slowly a grin spread across Snyders face, he'd heard rumors about the Librarian and Miss Summers but nobody had been able to give him the hard evidence he needed to prove they weren't just good friends. Now he'd caught them in the act, so to speak.

He walked into the library and saw Buffy Summers straddling Mr Giles pretty much as he had expected,

"You're going to need a very good excuse for this one Mr Giles. Taking advantage of a Student like that, I could fire you for less, you know."

Buffy got off Giles and the two stood up straightening their clothes,

"It wasn't what it looked like, honestly. Please, don't fire him." Buffy told her Principal

"Now, Why is it that I don't believe you Miss Summers? Can you tell me what happened to cause you to be straddling Mr Giles apart from the obvious of course?"

"Um..well"

At this point Giles could take no more of this obnoxious little man's attitude towards Buffy and joined in,

"What right do you think you have to talk to her like that? Huh?" He asked advancing on Snyder.
"She's 18, She can see who ever she likes and I'm not her teacher so why does it affect you, I'm only the school librarian, how could it affect her school work in any way?" He asked as he stopped right in front of the Principal so he had to look down to see him. Bending right down so he was face to face with the little man, he whispered something to him. Snyder paled and fled the library.

"What did you tell him Giles?" Buffy asked when Snyder was out of hearing range.

"Nothing that I'm ever going to tell you." He replied. Buffy pouted in an attempt to change his mind. But when he didn't budge she assumed it was something she probally didn't want to know about Giles anyway and left it.

"Thanks for sticking up for me, Giles. Allthough you do realise that now he thinks we're together, you needn't have let him think that you know."

"I found it rather nice to tell you the truth, that he would think you'd want to be sleeping with me. Anyway it'll all blow over soon. I think it's time we both went home, remember to patrol tonight."

"Yeah, I will" Buffy replied putting on a face of self pity and resignation that made Giles have to try even harder than usual to keep from laughing out loud.

The graveyards were rather quite that night and on the third she'd visited with still no Vamps she figured it was safe enough to stop ans so sat down on a gravestone to think about the afternoons events.

The really weird bit was Giles comment afterwards about not minding if people thought I was sleeping with him, I mean I've thought of him like that obviously, who wouldn't, even if he's a bit older, he's younger than Angel, and human which gives him an edge. But I never thought he might think about me. I almost forget he's male half the time he seems so lacking in hormones sometimes compared to Xander and even Dad with his new girlfriend. Although there was the bandy candy incident so maybe he juat hides it better. Anyway what about the loving her like a daughter thing that happened on her birthday, wait a minute he never said that, never denied it either but maybe he loves me in a different way to that, it's a lot to hope for but maybe...

Giles sat in his apartment thinking about this afternoon.

I can't believe I told her I wouldn't mind people thinking we're together, I mean, people already whisper behind are backs and things, and I don't mind. But I shouldn't have told her that. Now she'll think I'm some sick old man who likes to pretend he's sleeping with 17 year olds. I love Buffy, but she'll never return that feeling thats why I will not tell her. I've been through this hundreds of times and then I slip like that. I don't even know what I said was true, what do I know about the American legal system? It's still legal for teachers and students to be together in England. Oh no it's not they passed that law last year but most Principles ignore it anyway. Not our Principle though he'd never ignore something like that, he could fire and expel someone in the same minute. It'd make his day.

Giles walked into the library the next morning and immediately sensed someone was there, "Buffy?" he called out as he entered the room nut then a man came out of his office,

Who's he? And what's he doing in my office? He seems familiar. Oh I know he's in the history department we've had some nice conversations about my time at the museum. Now whats his name, ah..

"Paul. Nice to see you. What brings you down here?"

"Well, I felt I really aught to tell you. Um, Snyder was saying some things about you at the staff meeting last night. He didn't have any proof mind. But that didn't stop the rest of the staff believing him. I don't know if they're true and I don't really care either but the others do. I thought you should be warned."

"Ah, right. I assume you're talking about Buffy." Paul nodded. "Well, thanks for the warning. I apreciate it but I'm sure it'll all blow over soon."

"Yes, maybe. I'd better be off, I'm teaching first period and I can't even remember who I'm teachng let alone what! See you around, then."

Buffy walked into her biology class and everyone stopped talking, not the kind of stopping talking where people run out of things to say but the kind of stopping talking where the person you were talking about has just walked in. Buffy resolutely walked to her seat ignoring them, everyone watched her turning round to smurk at their neighbours once she'd past. Once Buffy sat down the girl next to her, someone buffy had talked to a total of twice, started asking her all about her 'big affair'. Buffy curtly told her that she wasn't having an affair to have an affair one party had to be married. The girl ignored Buffy tone and carried on asking her about Giles, Buffy stood up and walked out of the classroom.

So far Buffy hadn't even made to a single class past when the teacher turned up as she walked down the corridor she could feel the heads turning to stare at her.

It's just not fair. everyone is treating me like I'm a freak. It'd be allright if I actually was sleeping with him then I'd deserve it.

Buffy walked past a group of girls that she recognised from the year below her. As she walked they started to giggle and Buffy decided she'd had quite enough,

"What's your problem, girls? To young to understand about older men are you? Don't worry in a few years you'll reach puberty and then you'll get it" she said in a voice that managed to be friendly yet still dripping with more condesention than one of Cordy's meanest comments. The girls stood shocked that their prey had answered back, and that made Buffy feel much better. She walked on to the library to see how Giles was holding up.
