Giles walked into the Bronze nervously, although he'd been here before it had only been to find the others except the 'Spring fling' when Jenny had gone as well. Now he felt like a complete adult and was begining to wonder if he'd been sensible to accept, not that he didn't think he'd have a good time with Buffy, but it had been a bit of a shock. He looked around the club trying to draw as little attention to himself as possible untill he saw Buffy. When he spied her table he walked over and sat down on the chair opposite.
"Hello, Buffy. I'm not late am I?"
"No I'm early that's all."
"Is anyone else coming?" He asked.
"Yeah. Didn't I say? Cordy and Willow are coming. And they're bringing dates."
"Why haven't you brought a ..Oh yes sorry I forgot. Is it Xander and Oz?"
"No it's not. But they're both guys you know." Giles could tell Buffy wasn't planning on enlightning him any further so he didn't push the point, he'd find out soon enough anyway.
"Would you like a drink Buffy?"
"Yes please. I'll come too, there's quite a queue it might take a while." So the pair went up to the bar and waited around for the queue to die down so they could be served.
"How did your weekend with your Dad go?" Giles asked to Buffy's surprise, she'd only told him in passing yet he'd remembered.
"It was fine. Nice to see him after all this time, even if he was 2 hours late. I should have expected it I suppose."
"I'm sorry Buffy, he obviously doesn't appreiciate what he's missing. His loss."
"Thanks Giles. Hey there's Cordy." Giles turned round to greet Buffy's friend and saw who she was with. Turning back to Buffy he whispered through clenched teeth.
"Spike? Why didn't you tell me. I have to spend the whole evening with him? I thought I'd gotten rid of him for the evening."
"Sorry Giles. I didn't think you'd come if I told you."
"Too right I wouldn't have come." Buffy's face fell as he told her this so he tried to make up for his tacklessness by promising to be nice to him, and to Willow's date who ever that might be. It was the least he could do.
"Hi Buffy, Giles." At this point they were saved from having to make conversation by the arrival of a very bouncy Willow - dateless.
"Willow, where is he? He is coming, right?" Buffy asked
"Oh, yeah. He's parking his car. He brought me flowers! It was so cool."
"What type of car is it?" Cordy asked
"I don't know! Well, it was a jag. convertable. But I don't know anything more than that. Ohh here he is."
The others in the party all turned to greet Willows date and everybody's jaw dropped, barring Spike. The girls due to the perfectly coiffed, tuxedo wearing Ethan, they could almost see Willows point.
"Whos the James Bond impersonator?" Spike asked
"Names Rayne, Ethan Rayne." Ethan replied laughing.
"The guy from Halloween? Giles has mentioned you. Good work." Spike replied.
"Ahh, yes Ripper, how are you old boy?" He enquired turning to his old friend.
"Less of the old, Ethan." Giles growled with barely held back restraint. "Lets try to pretend we like each other, for the girls sake at least. Just for tonight though."
"Not a problem in the least, Ripper. I never had anything against you. Oh apart from the whole pretending to be a responible person, a librarian of all people! Who never did anything wrong and doesn't like having fun and.."
"Ethan! Please." Willow begged her date.
"My apologies. Would you like to dance?" He asked in an abrupt change of conversation, escorting her on to the dance floor. Not wanting to be out done Giles also asked Buffy if she would join him on the dance floor. The band was playing a slow number so neither of the girls thought they'd be too embarrased by their middle aged partners but not only were they not embarrased, the boys they could actually dance! Both of them were a bit rusty but had obviously been fantastic dancers back in their London days.
The song finished and the band started up a faster number, the two couples kept dancing, each pair trying to out shine the other. It wasn't the kind of dancing the girls were used to, Buffy recognised the style as swing from some old movies she'd watched with her Mum. Although the girls didn't know the moves their dates were strong partners and they soon learned the basics.
Once the girls had gotten the hang of it Ethan upped the pace incoperating more showy, difficult moves, not wanting to be out done Giles started the same. By this point the other couples on the dance floor had moved away to give them some room and were all cheering on one couple or the other. When the song finished Giles and Ethan both made showy bows to their partners and to the 'audience' before Buffy and Willow dragged them off the dance floor.
"What was that about?" Buffy asked Giles as they went to try and find Spike and Cordelia.
"It was Swing."
"I know that! But the whole I have to be better than you thing. You're supposed to be grown-ups."
"I don't know what you're talking about Buffy." He complained with indignation.
"Come on! You're never that outgoing without prompting. I know you."
"I expect you're right. Ethan and I were always rather competitive. I shall try to restrain my behaviour"
"Good!"
Buffy and Willow walked off to the bar, leaving their dates to follow in shame, although the girls hadn't minded the performance nearly as much as they pretended. Both girls ordered diet cokes and the guys got beers, they grabbed the one spare table in the room and sat, the two couples sitting oposite each other, Buffy and Willow chatted while Giles and Ethan glared at each other across the table. Cordy walked upto the others
"Spike and I are going back to his. He doesn't like the atmosphere apparently but I think I've pulled."
"Way to go Cordy" Willow told her. "Well, see you later!"
Ethan got up then, and asked if anyone wanted another drink, the girls had barely started theirs but Giles agreed.
"Are you sure, old man?" Ethan asked him "Don't want to overdo it and embarrass yourself now, do you."
"Shut up, Ethan. I can take anything you can and stop calling me old you're two months older than me."
"Ah but there's the difference you see. I don't act it."
"Giles, please. Can you two stop fighting for one minute?" Buffy interrupted the row, Giles glared at her in reply.
"This isn't your fight Buffy. Ethan, I'll prove to you I'm still better than you. Downing competeion."
"You're on." Giles and Ethan walked to the bar where they ordered two beers and promptly finished them slamming them back down on the bar at the exact same moment, both irritated that no one had one they ordered again. Buffy and Willow looked on from the table where they had all been sitting previously.
"This is such a disaster, Wil." Buffy complained to her friend.
"You just don't expect Giles to act like this thats all. I think Ethan's bringing out the Ripper in him. They're not doing anything dangerous afterall, just bloke pride stuff."
"I don't care why they're doing it, it's wierd. Lets leave them to it. Actually lets not. I've been waiting for this long enough, I am NOT letting him get away from me this easily."
"Yay you!"
"Come on Will, We have to go to my house for a couple of minutes." She explained as she grabbed her arm to drag her out. Willow looked at the guys at the bar staring intently over their empty glasses at each other as they waited for refills.
"But.."
"They won't miss us. Come on."
Buffy and Willow left the Bronze and as predicted Giles and Ethan didn't even notice when they left. They did however notice when they returned half an hour later. Buffy strode confidantly in to the Bronze with Willow following a little unsurely behind her, Giles and Ethan's jaws dropped simultaneuosly as they saw their dates standing in front of them wearing the skimpyest clothes that Buffy owned, well Buffy's were and Willow's showed a lot more than usual even if she wasn't quite as daring as the Buffster. As they entered Willow asked Buffy nervously,
"What do we do now? We've got their attention, can I change?"
"We dance and no. We need to follow up the advantage, this is war Willow."
"You don't think you're being a little overserious?"
"Not at all. I'm gonna have that man to keep even if it takes all night." Buffy resolutely told Willow and walked onto the dance floor bringing Willow with her.
The two girls danced with each other, in full view of their dates who watched every move but the girls completly ignored them. As the song progressed Willow became more confidant in the skirt Buffy had lent her and so her dancing became less nervous.
"Wow" Ethan breathed as he watched her.
"Who are you wowing at." Giles growled assuming that Buffy was the object of the other mans admiration.
"Are you blind, Man?" Ethan asked him incredulously.
"No. I would appreciate it if you stopped drooling over Buffy."
"Buffy!" Ethan laughed. "Why would I look at Buffy, when Willow's standing right there. Buffy's nothing to her."
"What. Did. You. Say?" Giles virtually spat out stepping forward so they were face to face.
"I..uh..well..said I prefer Willow to Buffy. But Buffy's great too."
"Better." He grunted turning back to where the girls danced. They however had noticed the lack of attention on the mens parts, so they moved on from dancing with each other and had aquired a couple of guys they vaguely knew from college and were dancing with them in a way Angel had once described as 'mating'. Giles eyes darkened and he started to move towards Buffy to extract her from the guy, but Ethan grabbed his arm.
"Wait" He told Giles.
"What?" the bewildered man asked him. "You want me to stand here while some child takes advantage of my Buffy?"
"That's the point. That's why they're doing it." Giles gave him a blank look. "To make us jealous."
"Oh right. Ok." He grudgingly leaned back against the bar and watched. He watched Buffy rub herself against this guy, he watched the guy cup her butt, he watched as he put his other hand up her top and watched as Buffy removed it, however when the guy got annoyed at this and brought his hand up to hit her he could watch no more, leaping into action he ran across the room to where Buffy was dancing and grabbed the guys uplifted hand. Pulling hard he brought it around the guys back and twisted till the guys knees let him down, when he was kneeling infront of Giles, Giles rammed him in the jaw with his knee. Leaving the guy lying on the floor he walked up to Buffy and stroked her hair,
"Are you alright Buffy?"
"Fine now thankyou."
"I'm sorry for being a jerk tonight, Buffy." He apologised but didn't leave time for her to accept as he bent down and kissed her on the lips until they both had spots in front of their eyes from lack of oxygen.
"At last!" Buffy exclaimed. "I hope Willow's evening is going as well as mine."
"It looks like it, look over there." He told her pointing across the floor to where Willow was standing in front of a kneeling apologetic Ethan.
"Please forgive me. I'm truly apologetic, I was a cad and will never behave in such an ungentlemanly fashion towards you again."
"Apology accepted." Willow told him giving him her hand to help him rise which he then kissed before imitating Giles action from a couple of minutes earlier.
"The two couples walked out of the Bronze arms around each other. The perfect end to a not so perfect night.
