Looking around the dance floor he sought out 'his lot' from amongst the happily dancing couples, Xander and Cordelia, now that was an odd pair, who would have thought it, Willow and Oz, the pair as usual oblivious to the rest of the world perfectly content to gaze into each others eyes. Then he found the one he was looking for, Buffy. Sitting on her own at a table by the wall, idly playing with the balloons that had been prepared as a center piece for all the tables, waiting. For a moment he just stood there and watched her, 'his' girl, on her own. It didn't seem fair all those happy people and the most important person in his world was miserable. And Angel not turning up for the prom, he couldn't believe it, Buffy had said how it meant so much to her and yet Angel was so self-centered he couldn't even give her this much.

Standing up he walked through the crowd to 'his' girl, he wasn't going to let her down now, after all they'd been through since that first meeting in the library. As he reached her, buffy looked up, hope filled her eyes but dimmed slightly when she saw that the man above her wasn't Angel, but she smled attempting to pretend it wasn't important, that it didn't matter to her.

"Hi Giles"

"Miss Summers, May I have this dance?"

Taking her hand he led her onto the dance floor, putting her other hand on his shoulder and his round her waist they started moving to the slow song. Around them students would give strange looks, feeling that their suspicions about Buffy and the school librarian had been confirmed. I wish, was the librarians silent responce, but this isn't about me. It's about making this night special for Buffy. The song finished but the pair kept slowly dancing even though the next song was fast. Buffy laid her head on her partners chest, brought her hand up behind his head and clung to him as if he was the only thing keeping her sane, I suppose I might be at that, he thought to himself, the others are there for her but they don't really understand her, I've been there. Looking down at her silent form he saw tears falling from her eyes,

"Hush, Buffy, I'm not going to go anywhere, sweetheart." he comforted her and wiped away her tears.

"Can I stay with you tonight, Giles, I can't cope with the others tonight...."

"I know, of course you can stay. But won't Mrs Summers wonder where you are?"

"Nobody goes home on prom night."

As the last song faded away the couple just stood there, clutching each other. When the other 2 couples came to pick up Buffy, Giles waved them to go without her. Willow stopped to enquire what the matter was but her boyfriend, observent as usual pulled her on and out of the hall, understanding Buffy's need to be alone.

"Um, Buffy. They need to clear up, we aught to go." he told her gently pulling her awy from him but still keeping hold of her hand. They left the dance floor and went outside to sit on the steps in the moonlight. Leaning into him Buffy finally broke down, sobbing into his shirt. They sat there in silence, untill Buffy had spent her tears and wiped her eyes.

"Thanks, Giles."

"I know you don't like Angel, you probally think I'm better off without him."

"I never like to see you upset, and even if Angel had been my best friend before tonight I wouldn't ever forgive him for doing this to you."

"Thanks Giles, you're my best friend." Sadly Giles smiled at her, 'best friend' he could cope with that and one day if there was more he'd be waiting for her, he'd waited this long and he would wait forever if he had to.

"Lets go home, hey?"
