Breeding stocks should be the very best. Your success depends entirely on your breeder. All my breeding stocks are purely developed here in New Zealand. Takes me many years to get the right size, shape, colors and head-growth. I am not an experience breeder but I learned most of the mechanics by experimenting.
Here in the southern hemisphere, spawning usually at high peak during October and November but will continue until January. Autumn spawning usually during April.
A healthy mature female can spawn 8 times per year. Even you missed some, you still have lots of chances. The period between spawning is usually 10 to 15 days. If you missed one just wait for another 10 to 15 days.
I don't like natural spawning. I am an avid dry spawning fan. Dry spawning can yield 95% to 99% hatching rate compare to natural which is 40%to 50%. Natural spawning will also create fungi bloom and will kill not only fertilized eggs but also your hatchlings.
I feed lots during spawning period. How many is lots. My breeder will eat as long as 30 minutes. This break the rules of feeding. To do this you need a good size tank and filter that can handle this load.
