My mother always said I had a very good guardian angel - she was wrong. My guardian who I have given many headaches and bad moments and generally made work very hard over the years is undoubtedly a fairy godmother. The angel I don't think would have the job being too - well - angelic

The difference as far as I can tell is - the guardian angel stops you from getting into trouble thereby saving him/herself the bother of having to sort out the mess. The fairy godmother however believes that one can only gain experience and knowledge by trying things out for yourself and is standing by with practical advice (and sometimes just a little magic) when things go badly wrong.

Angels are celestial beings not really to be questioned/argued with. Fairy godmothers are always good for a chat and there is nothing they like better than a good bit of reasoning over a cup of coffee (for you).

I can't remember where or when I first came across Brian Froud's artwork. I think it was probably my husband introducing me to -The Dark Crystal - and later -Labyrinth- , which my son went through a stage of watching over and over again.

I was in a huge bookshop in London a couple of years ago (bliss) and I went looking for books with illustrations by Brian. The assistant I asked looked at me a little strangely (Oh, look I've got a right nutter here!) and directed me towards the humour section. I was upset. I wasn't looking for humour. I was looking for amazing fairies with an irridessant quality. I left with a copy of - Strange Stains and Mysterious Smells - which made me laugh - I have far too many of these in my slowly collapsing, nearly 300 year old home.

I found the best place to start if your looking for Brian's work is the internet. One of my most treasured possessions is a copy of Brian's beautiful - Fairy Oracle -. For the online version click here .

I can think of very few people who I would be totally in awe of if I ever met them. To Brian all I think I could say is - THANK YOU
and then I'd probably blush bright red!
