Many youth in Mississauga excel in sports, music, volunteer work and other challenges. These pages are being created to profile some of these Outstanding Youths!
Save Our Streams (and Lakes, and Rivers, and Ponds....)
In April, 2003, members of the 52nd Mississauga Brownies helped spread the word that what goes into storm sewer grates comes out in our streams and lakes. The troop participated in the Yellow Fish Road Storm Drain Marking Program. Stickers were glued near storm sewer grates in the Sheridan Homelands area. Bright yellow "fish" were posted on people's doors explaining the program.
The Yellow Fish help remind people not to dispose of hazardous household wastes by dumping them into the sewers. Water from storm sewers is NOT treated before it returns to our streams and lakes.
Tips on the Yellow Fish Flyer included:
* the water we drink can be polluted from our storm sewers
* when it rains, lawn and garden pesticides and fertilizers can wash into the storm sewers
* motor oil, loosened up by car-washing suds, can wash off driveways and roads into storm sewers
* for info on safely disposing of wastes, in Peel Region call 905 791-9499
