Crazy For You is a marvelous musical comedy that shows that love reigns over
anything. It's based on the Gershwin old musical, Girl Crazy. Crazy For You basically holds the same storyline, but with a different setting, and new songs. This musical is really a compilation of songs from previous Gershwin musicals, from lost Gershwin songs, and from other popular ones.
Crazy For You features Bobby Child, a banker who yearns to be in show business. He is told by his mother, who's the head of the family banking business, to foreclose a theater located in a very small town in Deadrock, Nevada. Contrary to what his wealthy fiancee, Irene Roth(whom he doesn't want to marry), tells him, Bobby heads to Nevada.
Once in Deadrock, Bobby meets the inhabitants, who are all men. Bobby then encounters Polly Baker, the only female resident of Deadrock. Bobby falls in love with Polly at first sight. He starts to talk to her, and they begin to get along; that is, until Polly finds out that Bobby is the person assigned to repossess Polly's long-had family theater.
Bobby, anguished by the fact that Polly detests the man who'll take away the only treasure she and the town have, comes up with a clever idea to attempt to be around Polly. Bobby disguises himself as the all-time famous impresario, Bela Zangler. Bobby, then once again arrives in Deadrock. This time as Bela though, and with plenty of showgirls, with a plan to save the theater from the "repossessers." Polly, and the whole town, welcome such idea.
Bobby fools Deadrock that he is indeed Bela Zangler. He, and the town, begin to work on a stage show, to which they hope enough people attend, so they can profit, pay off the theater's mortgage, and save it.
As they rehearse for the long-expected performance, Polly begins to fall in love with Bobby, whom she thinks is Bela. Everything is well, except for the town villain, Lank Hawkins, who is also obsessed Polly. He warns Polly not to put on such show. Polly ignores him. To worsen things, Bobby's fiancee, Irene, arrives in Deadrock. Irene recognizes Bobby, and decides to stay in Deadrock.
Bobby, Polly, and the townspeople succeed in putting on a performance. As they grow anxious to perform on opening night, they're surprised and disappointed when only two people arrive; and they came to town not even for the show. So, they end up with no audience, no ticket sales, but still put on a show for themselves. As this is happening the real Bela Zangler arrives. Polly discovers the truth about the "Zangler's", and finds herself in a pond of confussion, which then turns into a pond of resentment towards Bobby himself.
After a meeting of the townspeople about the fate of the theater(and after persistance, and plenty of explanation), Polly is no longer angry at Bobby. Bobby tells Polly that he loves her, but if that there isn't anything to keep him there, he'll head back to New York. Polly, too proud to admit she loves him too, agrees.
Bobby indeed heads to New York. The real Zangler then, takes over the Deadrock theater, and succeeds in keeping it. He does this for Tess's sake, one of the dancers brought from New York, whom he's in love with.
After a few months of leaving Deadrock, Bobby realizes that he can't live without Polly, and returns. There, he finds himself with quite many surprises. He finds that the theater is successful. He also find his ex-fiancee Irene, married to Lank.
He reunites with Polly and they confess their love to each other. The curtain closes as they kiss, dance and hold each other.
